COLUMBIA, S.C. (Wednesday, Nov. 2) – Beaufort County survivors of the storms and floods of Hurricane Matthew can get information and disaster assistance from the specialists staffing the county’s second Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in the Town Hall Council Chambers, 1 Town Center Court, Hilton Head, SC 29928. The center is open weekly Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until further notice.  It is closed on Sunday.

Representatives from the State of South Carolina, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration and voluntary organizations are at the DRC to provide guidance concerning disaster recovery and rental resources, explain written correspondence from FEMA, inform survivors of the status of their application, make referrals to other organizations and to answer questions.

If possible, survivors should register with FEMA before visiting the DRC.  Registration can be online at  DisasterAssistance.gov, or by calling 800-621-3362 (voice, 711 and video services) or 800-462-7585 (TTY). The toll-free lines are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.  Multilingual operators are available.

DRCs are accessible to people with disabilities. The centers have tools to amplify sound, magnifiers and materials in alternative formats along with video remote interpretation. Sign language interpreters are available upon request at the center.

Second Recovery Center opens in Beaufort County

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Tuesday, Nov. 1) – A Disaster Recovery Center (DRC), offering information on disaster assistance to survivors of the storms and floods of Hurricane Matthew, will open in Georgetown County Nov. 1.  The center will be located at the Beck Recreation Center, 2030 Church St., Georgetown, SC 29440. Georgetown County gets first Disaster Recovery Center

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Thursday, Oct. 27) – In the three weeks since Hurricane Matthew struck South Carolina spawning damaging storms and floods, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Small Business Administration have approved more than $21.8 million in disaster assistance grants, loans and flood insurance payments.

As of the close of business Oct. 26, FEMA had approved $15.2 million through its Individuals and Households Program, and nearly $5 million in National Flood Insurance Program payments.

Additionally, the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved 42 low-interest disaster loans for

$1,670,500.

Survivors have until Dec. 13, 2016 to complete the FEMA application process. The State of South Carolina and FEMA encourage anyone with housing needs caused by the devastating storms and floods of Hurricane Matthew to register for disaster assistance.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Survivors rebuilding their lives from Hurricane Hermine have 30 days left to register for federal disaster assistance. The storm caused widespread damage along Florida’s western coastline. The State of Florida, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) continue to support individual and family recovery efforts.

As of close of business Oct. 27, 2016, nearly $38 million in federal assistance has been provided to homeowners, renters and business owners in designated areas for Hurricane Hermine, including:

  • $27 million in flood insurance approved for policyholders under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
  • More than $5.5 million approved to help individuals and families recover from the disaster, including more than $4.5 million for housing assistance.
  • Nearly $5.4 million in SBA disaster loans to both individuals and businesses.

Individuals who have underinsured or uninsured damages or losses from Hurricane Hermine and who live in the eight eligible counties still have until Monday, Nov. 28, to register for FEMA assistance. The counties included in the federal disaster declaration are Citrus, Dixie, Hernando, Hillsborough, Leon, Levy, Pasco and Pinellas

Hurricane Hermine Survivors: Assistance Still Available, 30 Days Left to Register for Federal Disaster Aid

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – State, local and tribal government agencies and certain private nonprofits in Palm Beach County can now request funding through FEMA’s Public Assistance grant program to help pay for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair or rebuilding of roads, bridges, water-control facilities, buildings, equipment, utilities, parks and recreational facilities.

Brevard, Duval, Flagler and St. Lucie counties, which had been previously designated for reimbursement of costs of debris removal and emergency protective measures, can now also request assistance to cover eligible repair or rebuilding of critical infrastructure. These additional designations will help pay for Florida’s recovery from Hurricane Matthew.

Four Additional North Carolina Counties Now Designated for Disaster Assistance

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the State of Nevada to combat the Little Valley Fire burning in Washoe County.

On October 14, 2016, the State of Nevada submitted a request for a Fire Management Assistance Declaration for the Little Valley Fire burning in Washoe County.  At the time of the request, the fire was immediately threatening 150 homes in and around the community of West Washoe Valley.    Mandatory evacuations were taking place for approximately 200 people.  The fire, which also started on October 14, has burned in excess of total 700 acres of state and private land.

The Acting Regional Administrator, FEMA Region IX, determined that the Little Valley Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster.  The State’s request was immediately approved on October 14, 2016.

Fire Management Assistance Grants (FMAGs) provide federal funding for up to 75% of eligible firefighting costs.  The Disaster Relief Fund provides funding for FMAGs through FEMA to assist in fighting fires which threaten to cause major disasters.  Eligible costs covered by FMAGs can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools; materials; supplies and mobilization; and demobilization activities.

Teams of State and FEMA disaster survivor assistance specialists will soon be moving into affected communities to help people register for assistance. Additionally, disaster recovery centers are planned to open in the near future in affected counties.

Assistance for eligible survivors can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, and for other serious disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral and burial costs. Long-term, low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also may be available to cover losses not fully compensated by insurance and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations.

Survivors should contact their insurance company to file their insurance claim. FEMA is unable to duplicate insurance payments. However, those without insurance or those who may be underinsured may still receive help after their insurance claims have been settled.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profit organizations fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations. Six More North Carolina Counties Now Designated for Disaster Assistance

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – State and federal recovery officials encourage Florida residents to watch for and report any suspicious activity or potential fraud from scam artists, identity thieves and other criminals who may try to prey on survivors vulnerable due to the recent hurricanes. They should also be on the lookout for price gouging by gas stations, hotels and other businesses serving disaster survivors in Florida.

FEMA encourages survivors to be especially vigilant for these common post-disaster fraud practices:

  • Fraudulent building contractors

  • Use only licensed local contractors backed by reliable references.

  • Demand that contractors carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation.

  • Don’t pay more than half the costs of repairs upfront.

     

  • Bogus pleas for post-disaster donations 

  • Verify legitimate solicitations by asking for the charity’s exact name, street address, phone number and Web address.

  • Phone the charity and confirm that the person asking for funds is a genuine employee or volunteer.

  • Don’t pay donations with cash.

  • Request a receipt with the charity’s name, street address, and phone number.

     

  • Fake offers of state or federal aid

  • Beware of visits, telephone calls or e-mails — claiming to be from FEMA or the State of Florida — asking for your Social Security number, bank account number or other sensitive information.

  • Avoid scam artists who promise a disaster grant and ask for large cash deposits or advance payments in full.

  • Federal and state workers never solicit or accept money or charge applicants for disaster assistance, inspections or help in filling out applications.

Those who question the validity of a contact or suspect fraud are encouraged to call the toll free FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-720-5721 or the Florida Attorney General’s fraud and price gouging hotline at 866-966-7226. Complaints also may be made by contacting local law enforcement agencies.
