TRENTON, N.J. — Property and business owners affected by Hurricane Sandy along the New Jersey coast have new guidance for rebuilding stronger, safer and smarter to avoid the consequences of future floods.

The State of New Jersey and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have released Advisory Base Flood Elevation (ABFE) maps for 10 coastal counties: Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Union. 

ABFE maps are digital renderings of flood hazards maps that provide an updated depiction of flood hazards for communities affected by coastal flooding including those along rivers that are subject to tidal surges. 

To access the new maps, visit region2coastal.com and click on the Hurricane Sandy tab.

The advisory maps, which are based upon scientific and engineering assessments of storms like Sandy, will provide communities with recommended building elevations for use in reconstruction until more detailed data becomes available.

With the updated information: 

  • Property owners can understand where flood risks exist and make informed decisions about elevations or about taking other mitigation steps to protect the investment in their property.
  • State and local governments can site and elevate public buildings and facilities and guide new construction.
  • Architects and builders can design better rebuilding and rehabilitation solutions for property owners.

Communities are being encouraged to adopt the ABFEs because they provide a significant opportunity to mitigate their future flood risk. Communities can increase their resiliency against future disasters, and flood insurance policy holders may save on future flood insurance premiums.

Property and business owners should work with local building officials to fully understand any requirements for using ABFEs in rebuilding. Decisions made now can mean a safer, stronger, smarter future.

Know Your Risk Now to Build Back Stronger, Safer, Smarter

WINDSOR, Conn. — Hurricane Sandy survivors along Connecticut’s coast are asking an important question: How can I protect my home from future flooding?

One of the most effective methods is for them to elevate their home.

“Elevation may be one of the best ways to protect your home, your family and your possessions,” said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Albert Lewis. “Home elevation isn’t simple or cheap, but it is extremely effective.”

The advantages of elevating homes include:

  • Reducing the flood risk to the house and its contents;
     
  • Eliminating the need to move vulnerable contents to areas above the water level during a flood;
     
  • Reducing the physical, financial and emotional strain that accompanies floods;
     
  • Providing additional parking and storage space at home; and
     
  • Decreasing flood insurance premiums by reducing the risk to a property.

Through the National Flood Insurance Program, local communities enact and enforce floodplain management regulations. Flood survivors should check on local code requirements before repairing or elevating their homes.

Guard Against Future Damage with Home Elevations; FEMA Can Help

NEW YORK – People whose property was damaged or destroyed in Hurricane Sandy and are ready to start rebuilding can get advice from experts. Specialists who are knowledgeable in all facets of cleanup and building safer and smarter to avoid future losses will be dispensing guidance free of charge, compliments of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

FEMA experts will staff tables at Home Depot stores in Nassau County at 86 Jericho Turnpike, Jericho; in Suffolk County at 202 Airport Plaza Blvd, Farmingdale; in Kings County at 5700 Avenue U, Brooklyn; in Queens County at 75-09 Woodhaven Blvd, Glendale; and in Bronx County at 1806 East Gun Hill Road, the Bronx.

Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, Dec. 8, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9.

Advice and direction on flood cleanup, flood-insurance matters, and repair and rebuilding will be available to all, not just to customers who are registered with FEMA.

These “mitigation” experts will be able to talk about elevating electrical services and appliances; installing sewer back-flow valves; removing and replacing drywall and insulation; channeling water away from foundations; and repairing with water-resistant materials.

For every dollar spent on mitigation, FEMA officials say, nearly four times as much is saved when another disaster like Sandy hits.

Crisis Counseling for Sandy Survivors

LINCROFT,  N.J. — Families and individuals in New Jersey who are registered for federal disaster assistance and need a place to live can search through hundreds of rental listings on the FEMA Housing Portal.

The FEMA Housing Portal consolidates rental resources identified and provided by federal agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the U.S. Veterans Administration (VA), and also lists rental properties provided by private organizations and property owners willing to help their neighbors during these difficult times.

FEMA recommends that those who use the portal contact the number on the listing prior to traveling to the location of the property to make sure the property is still available. This site is updated regularly, but available housing units are being filled continuously so FEMA encourages users to check back often for the most current information.

FEMA Housing Portal Provides Resource to Help Survivors Find Rentals

BATON ROUGE, La. – Property owners who are rebuilding after Hurricane Isaac can receive a free consultation with Hazard Mitigation advisers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at home improvement centers in East Baton Rouge, Jefferson and Orleans parishes.

The advisers can offer tips and techniques on how to protect homes from future disaster-related damage and other measures to make homes stronger and safer; they also offer advice on topics such as:

  • emergency preparedness
  • roof repair
  • rebuilding flooded homes
  • home elevation
  • flood insurance
  • mold and mildew cleanup

WINDSOR, Conn. –One of the most important signs of progress is the arrival of an official damage inspector from the Federal Emergency Management Agency at a damaged property.

The arrival of an inspector from FEMA means the damage to a home will be identified and recorded.   Identifying damage is an important step in determining both the amount and the types of assistance FEMA may provide.

If you live in one of the counties designated for disaster assistance and have registered with FEMA, you may be eligible for grants to help pay for rental housing, essential home repairs and other disaster-related expenses.

All residents of Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven and New London counties, and the Mashantucket Pequot and the Mohegan Tribal Nations located within New London County may be eligible for federal disaster assistance from the FEMA Individual Assistance grant program.

The gateway to all this aid is registration for assistance with FEMA.

People with storm losses should register with FEMA online at our accessible website: www.DisasterAssistance.gov, with a smartphone or device at m.fema.gov.   Applicants can also register by phone by calling FEMA at: 800-621-3362.  If you use TTY, call 800-462-7585.  Multilingual operators are available.

Following your registration for assistance, should you qualify for an inspection; a FEMA inspector will call to set up a time to see your property.   It is important to meet the inspector to avoid delays in the inspection process.

If you can’t be present for the scheduled appointment, you can appoint someone 18 or older who lived in the house prior to the disaster to stand in for you during the inspection.

When the inspector arrives, be prepared to provide written proof of home ownership, such as a tax receipt, mortgage payment book or home insurance policy showing the property’s address.  If proof of ownership is not available, the inspector will complete the inspection, but proof of ownership must be provided to FEMA.   If the inspector is to document damage for a renter, proof of residence, such as a copy of the lease or a utility bill, is required.

The U.S. Small Business Administration and private insurance companies may also have inspectors working in your area, but the FEMA inspector will wear an official FEMA badge and will have the registration number your case was assigned when you registered for assistance.   FEMA does not charge a fee for an inspection.

DENTON, Texas – Santa Fe County, New Mexico, homeowners, business and residential renters and business

owners who do not have flood insurance are encouraged to buy coverage now to get the best possible premiums

before new flood insurance rate maps go into effect. 

The new Santa Fe County flood maps become effective on Tuesday, Dec. 4, giving those who haven’t purchased

flood insurance yet, time to get the best possible premiums to protect their property from potential flooding.

“While many people are required by mortgage and lending companies to have flood insurance, FEMA and the

National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) strongly recommend that everyone have flood insurance,” said Acting

Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson. “The reason is simple: You don’t have to be in a mapped floodplain to

flood.”

Current policy holders and those planning to purchase NFIP protection are strongly encouraged to contact their

insurance agent or company to ensure that they have adequate coverage for building and contents that accounts

for new flood risk data.

Those who purchase flood insurance prior to Dec. 4 may be able to grandfather the current flood zone, saving

Free Rebuilding Advice From FEMA At 84 Lumber And Walker Hardware

Clinton, Miss. Disaster recovery officials are concerned that many homeowners and renters with Hurricane Isaac losses could miss out on valuable grants and low-interest loans by not returning completed applications to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

“This is a win-win situation for everybody who received a disaster loan application from the SBA, even if they’re leaning away from a loan,” said Mississippi Emergency Management Director Robert Latham. “If the SBA is not able to approve your home loan application, you could be referred back to FEMA for a possible grant. And if you qualify for a loan, there is no obligation to take it.” 

Many disaster survivors receive loan applications from the SBA after registering with FEMA for help. Loan applications are also available from disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/. Property damage loan applications must be returned to the SBA no later than Oct. 31, 2012.

Business owners, although not eligible for grants, can apply for low-interest SBA disaster loans to cover uninsured losses to business assets such as real estate, machinery, equipment, inventory and more. 

Small businesses can also qualify for economic injury disaster loans. These working capital loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred. 

SBA representatives are at each of the MEMA/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers and SBA Business Recovery centers to provide information about disaster loans and offer assistance filing disaster loan applications. To locate a center or learn more about SBA disaster loans, call 800-659-2955,
