SAIPAN – Now that Tropical Storm Goni and the follow-on monsoonal rains begin to subside in the Saipan area, the following disaster recovery support services will resume on Monday, August 17:

  • FEMA Housing Inspections. Registered survivors will be contacted by a FEMA inspector to schedule an appointment for an inspection; you do not need to contact FEMA to set up an inspection. If you have been displaced and need transportation to and from the housing inspection, you can contact the Commonwealth Office of Transit Authority at 670-237-8000 to schedule transportation.
  • The joint Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will reopen on Monday, Aug. 17 at 8 a.m.

Hours of operation: Monday-Saturdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

After registering online or by telephone, survivors can access “one-stop shop” service at the DRC.  While visiting a DRC is not required, survivors can receive assistance with additional registration needs such as case inquiries and updates.  Subject matter experts from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration will be available at the DRC.

Survivors are encouraged to apply for assistance before coming to the DRC by calling 800-621- 3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services can call 800- 621-3362 to register. Online registration is also available at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.  If survivors are unable to register prior to visiting the DRC, there will be a phone bank available for registration or helpline support.

Disaster Recovery Support Services Resume Following Tropical Storm Goni

SEATTLE – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Cornet-Windy Ridge Fire burning in Baker County, Oregon.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. Murphy approved the state of Oregon’s request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) at 2:24 a.m. PDT on Aug. 13, 2015.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 145 homes in and around the communities of Stices Gulch, Black Mountain, Denny Creek and Rancheria Creek and had burned approximately 21,000 acres of federal, tribal, state and private land. Evacuation notices were issued to approximately 145 residences. There are multiple large fires burning uncontrolled within the state of Oregon. The Cornet-Windy Ridge Fire is at approximately 0 percent contained.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Oregon’s eligible firefighting costs for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

FMAGs are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; mobilization and demobilization activities; and tools, materials and supplies.

AUSTIN, Texas –A State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is now open in Hays County at a new location in San Marcos, Texas, for homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage as a result of the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 4 to June 22.

Specialists from the State of Texas, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), are on hand to answer questions and provide information on the types of assistance available to survivors. Services are provided in English and Spanish.

The recovery center serves survivors from any of the 47 counties designated for Individual Assistance who need one-on-one help. State and federal professionals will be available to assist eligible survivors to get help as quickly as possible.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK – Residents of nine Arkansas counties who suffered damage from the severe storms of May 7 through June 15, 2015, have only about two weeks’ left to register for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Disaster Recovery Center to Close in Bastrop County, Texas, But Help is Still Available

Following is a summary of key federal disaster aid programs that can be made available as needed and warranted under President Obama’s disaster declaration issued for the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands.

Assistance for Affected Individuals and Families Can Include as Required:

  • Rental payments for temporary housing for those whose homes are unlivable.  Initial assistance may be provided for up to three months for homeowners and at least one month for renters.  Assistance may be extended if requested after the initial period based on a review of individual applicant requirements.  (Source: FEMA funded and administered.)

  • Affected individuals and business owners in designated areas can begin the disaster application process by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or by web enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov.  Disaster assistance applicants, who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY, should call 1-800-462-7585 directly; for those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (local time) seven days a week until further notice. Applicants registering for aid should be prepared to provide basic information about themselves (name, permanent address, phone number), insurance coverage and any other information to help substantiate losses.

Assistance for the Commonwealth and Affected Local Governments Can Include as Required:

  • Payment of not less than 75 percent of the eligible costs for emergency protective measures, taken to save lives and protect property and public health. Federal Aid Programs for Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands Declaration

AUSTIN, Texas – As Texans rebuild or repair their homes damaged by the May 4 through June 22 storms, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and local home improvement stores have teamed up to provide free information, tips and literature on making homes stronger and safer.

FEMA specialists will be on hand in Wise County at in-store information centers to answer questions and offer home improvement tips and proven methods to prevent and lessen damage from future disasters. Most of the information is geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Also, if you’re thinking of building a storm shelter or safe room, literature is available about the best options. Safe rooms built to FEMA specifications have saved thousands of lives.
