FEMA Announces Emergency Food and Shelter Program Jurisdiction Allocations

WASHINGTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced the Emergency Food and Shelter Program allocations for jurisdictions to assist organizations dedicated to feeding, sheltering, and providing critical resources to our nation’s hungry and homeless. Total funding of $120 million was awarded and made available by Congress for the National Board of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) to support social service agencies in cities and counties across the country.

A state-by-state list of the eligible jurisdictions and award amounts is available at www.efsp.unitedway.org.

A National Board, chaired by DHS/FEMA, with representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities USA; The Jewish Federations of North America; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Salvation Army; and United Way Worldwide, governs the EFSP.  Selected by the National Board, United Way Worldwide serves as Secretariat and Fiscal Agent to the National Board.

EFSP funding is allocated to qualifying jurisdictions based on thresholds involving population, unemployment and poverty levels both nationally and locally. Grants are then awarded to non-profit community and government organizations that are chosen by local boards in the qualifying jurisdictions. This year’s award to the National Board brings the total aid disbursed in the EFSP’s 33-year history to more than $4.19 billion.

Additional Mississippi Counties Approved For Infrastructure Disaster Aid

RIDGELAND, Miss. – Local governments in Issaquena and Lawrence counties are now eligible to receive federal assistance to help cover expenses and repair damage associated with the Mississippi March floods, according to state and federal officials.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the two counties have been added to the disaster declaration issued by President Obama on March 25, 2016. That declaration authorized assistance for local governments in Bolivar, Claiborne, Clarke, Coahoma, Covington, Forrest, Greene, Holmes, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Lamar, Leake, Leflore, Lincoln, Marion, Panola, Pearl River, Perry, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tunica, Walthall, Washington and Wayne counties.

The disaster declaration makes designated state, county and local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations, eligible to receive reimbursement through the Public Assistance program.

Under the Public Assistance grant program, FEMA pays 75 percent of the cost for infrastructure repairs, overtime and debris removal. Typically, the remaining 25 percent is split between state and local governments at 12.5 percent each. Eligible nonprofits are responsible for the full 25 percent. The program is administered by the state.

The state and FEMA are working to schedule applicant briefings with officials of eligible entities and nonprofit organizations in the newly designated counties. MEMA and FEMA will provide information on the application process, as well as deadlines for submission of necessary documents to receive federal reimbursement.

The applicant briefings may be followed by face-to-face meetings in local communities between FEMA, state officials and eligible applicants.

Nearly $40 Million in Disaster Help Approved for Texas Survivors

AUSTIN, Texas – Nearly $40 million in disaster assistance has been approved for individuals and families in Texas whose properties were damaged or destroyed in the March 7-29 tornadoes and flooding.

This includes more than $17 million in grants to help eligible survivors with home repairs and temporary rental costs and more than $2 million in grants for expenses related to personal property, transportation, medical, dental, funeral and moving costs.

The deadline to register for federal assistance was May 18.

In the 13 counties included in the March disaster declaration, 1,797 registrations were approved for assistance. Those counties are: Erath, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Hood, Jasper, Limestone, Marion, Newton, Orange, Parker, Shelby and Tyler.

The nearly $40 million in federal assistance includes more than $18 million in low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration to businesses, homeowners and renters.

Texans who registered can update their registration information or check the status of their applications online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by phone at 800-621-3362 (FEMA). Applicants who use 711 or Video Relay Service may also call 800-621-3362. Persons who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585. March Storm Survivors in Mississippi Have Until Tuesday to Register With FEMA

RIDGELAND, Miss. – Survivors of the March floods in Mississippi have until Tuesday, May 24, to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for disaster assistance.

Survivors in Bolivar, Clarke, Coahoma, Forrest, George, Greene, Jones, Marion, Panola, Pearl River, Perry, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tunica, Washington and Wayne counties who suffered disaster-related losses to essential living areas in primary residences and have delayed registering for any reason can apply for assistance that may include:

  • Temporary rental assistance and money for essential home repairs to eligible survivors. FEMA’s ultimate goal is to ensure survivors’ dwellings are safe, sanitary and functional.
  • Assistance with disaster-related costs associated with medical, dental, personal property, transportation, moving and storage, or other necessary expenses.

Survivors can register with FEMA online at DisasterAssistance.gov or call FEMA’s helpline at 800-621-3362 (voice, 711 and video relay service). Survivors who are deaf, hard of hearing or who have difficulty speaking may call 800-462-7585 (TTY).

Tuesday is also the deadline to apply for a disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Homeowners or renters who have been referred for a low-interest disaster loan from the SBA should complete and return their loan application to be considered for other possible federal assistance. Survivors do not have to accept a loan, but these loans can help with underinsured losses.

Newton County Disaster Recovery Center to Operate as Disaster Loan Center; Harrison County Center to Close

AUSTIN, Texas – The disaster recovery centers in Harrison and Newton counties will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, coinciding with the deadline to register for federal assistance for the March tornadoes and flooding.

However, the U.S. Small Business Administration will begin operating a Disaster Loan Outreach Center at the same building on Thursday, May 19 in Newton County.

The center is located at the Senior Citizen Center, 43435 State Highway 87 South, Orange, TX 77632. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center will not operate on Saturdays and Sundays and will close on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.

At the Newton County Disaster Loan Outreach Center, SBA representatives will meet individually with residents and business owners affected by the March storms. Representatives answer questions, explain SBA’s disaster loan program, help complete loan applications and close approved disaster loans.

After the Harrison County recovery center closes May 18, residents whose homes or businesses were affected by the March 7-29 storms, tornadoes and flooding can get questions answered and update the status of their claims the following ways:

  • online at DisasterAssistance.gov

  • by calling 800-621-3362 (FEMA) or TTY 800-462-7585. Applicants who use 711 or Video Relay Service may also call 800-621-3362. FEMA Announces 2016 Youth Preparedness Council Members

WASHINGTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today the selectees for the 2016–2018 Youth Preparedness Council.

Created in 2012, the council brings together youth leaders from across the country who are interested in advocating on behalf of preparedness and making a difference in their communities by completing preparedness projects. The council supports FEMA’s commitment to involve youth in preparedness-related activities. It also provides an avenue to engage youth by taking into account their perspectives, feedback, and opinions. Council members meet with FEMA staff throughout their term to provide input on strategies, initiatives, and projects.

FEMA selected the ten new members of the council based on their dedication to public service, community involvement, and potential to expand their impact as national advocates for youth preparedness. The members selected in 2016 are:

SBA Disaster Loan May Help in Recovery Process

RIDGELAND, Miss. — Disaster survivors in Mississippi who apply for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and are referred to the U.S. Small Business Administration are advised to submit an SBA loan application to ensure that the disaster recovery process continues.

If you are a homeowner or renter and SBA determines you cannot afford a loan, you may be considered for FEMA’s other needs assistance program, which provides grants for disaster-related medical and dental care, funeral costs and vehicle repairs. Survivors may also be eligible for assistance from other organizations.

There is no requirement to take out a loan if one is offered from SBA.

Next to insurance, SBA is the primary source of funds for real estate property repairs and replacing lost contents following a disaster. Renters and homeowners alike may borrow up to $40,000 to repair or replace clothing, furniture, cars or appliances damaged or destroyed in the disaster. Homeowners may be eligible for low-interest loans up to $200,000 for primary residence structural repairs or rebuilding.

May 24, 2016, is the last day survivors can register with FEMA and apply for SBA disaster loans for physical damage.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps businesses of all sizes, private non-profit organizations, homeowners and renters fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations.
