FEMA-State Disaster Recovery Centers Stay Open Later To Help Survivors

WINDSOR, Conn. – The FEMA-State Disaster Recovery Centers in Connecticut will now be open later to give survivors more time to visit one of the centers.

Specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration are on hand at the centers to answer questions and provide information on the types of assistance available to survivors.

People who suffered losses can get person-to-person assistance at the centers from specialists skilled in disaster-related subjects.

If possible, before visiting a center, register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, at m.fema.gov on the browser of a smartphone or web device; or call 800-621-3362. TTY users call 800-462-7585. The toll-free numbers are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Help in many languages is available.

Disaster recovery specialists at the center can help with registration, check an individual’s case, answer questions about their claim, or review information needed to process their claim. Recovery specialists also can supply contacts for other programs that may be able to help.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private nonprofit organizations fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and covers the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. New Disaster Recovery Centers Now Open in Mercer, Burlington, Hunterdon, Warren, Sussex and Monmouth Counties

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey residents who were affected by Hurricane Sandy can now visit six newly-opened Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) if they have questions about recovery programs. Twenty-two DRCs across impacted areas are currently open daily from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. – with the exception of one in Hoboken operating 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To serve the needs of those impacted by Hurricane Sandy, all centers are open until further notice including Veteran’s Day.

Before going to a DRC, it is helpful to register with FEMA. Apply for assistance by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by web-enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Disaster assistance applicants who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY, should call 1-800-462-7585 directly; for those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362.

DRCs are set up for residents to be able to speak one-on-one to recovery representatives, but it is not necessary to visit a center to receive disaster assistance.

FEMA program specialists are available to provide registration and other information, and to answer questions at the centers. These include mitigation specialists who can provide guidance on cost-effective rebuilding and repair techniques to reduce property damage in future disasters.

In addition to FEMA program specialists, customer service representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available to answer questions about the SBA low-interest disaster loan program, and to assist with disaster loan applications.

An applicant may go to any DRC, even if it is located in another state. Once an application has been made, a FEMA registration number is given to the file. It can be accessed nationally.

Disaster Recovery Centers Open in Bronx, Kings, Nassau, Queens, Richmond and Suffolk Counties

ALBANY, NY — Eight Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are open to assist homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Specialists from the state of New York, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are on hand to answer questions and provide information on the types of help available to storm survivors.

The Disaster Recovery Centers act as a one-stop shop for eligible survivors to meet with state and federal workers and get help as quickly as possible.

Disaster recovery officials work closely with community leaders to find DRC locations that provide safe and easy access for all survivors.  More centers will open as sites are identified and approved.

Although it can be a convenient way to get one-on-one help, visiting with a recovery specialist is not a requirement for disaster survivors.

Individuals can register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov.  Applicants may also call 1-800-621-3362 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. If you use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m.to 10 p.m. EDT seven days a week until further notice.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) announce the Disaster Recovery Center in Sellersburg will remain open one more week. The center will close April 13, which means there are just days left to meet face to face with specialists to ask questions about the recovery process.

The center, which is located at Ivy Tech College, I-65 and Hwy 311(I-65 exit 9), operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Since March 13, when FEMA and IDHS jointly opened the DRC, more than 600 Hoosiers have received one-on-one assistance from state and federal specialists as they recover from severe storms that occurred Feb. 29 to March 3.

Specialists are available at the center to answer questions about FEMA recovery programs. Customer service representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration are on hand, helping individuals complete SBA low interest disaster loan applications.

SBA low interest disaster loans help homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private non-profit organizations fund repair or rebuilding and may cover the cost of replacing lost or damaged personal property or business assets. These loans may cover insurance deductibles, code-required upgrades and other costs not covered by insurance or other sources.

Before meeting with specialists at the recovery center, storm-impacted individuals should register with FEMA. The last day to register, May 8, is just one month away.

FEMA provides one phone number for homeowners, renters and businesses to register for assistance and to receive help after registering: (800) 621-FEMA (3362). INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announce new hours for the Disaster Recovery Center at Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg. Starting Sunday, March 25, and until further notice, the hours will be as follows:

The center will remain open as long as individuals continue to utilize its services.

More than 460 storm-impacted individuals have been served at the center since the IDHS and FEMA opened it March 13 at Ivy Tech Community College, I-65 and Hwy 311(I-65 exit 9).

At the center, storm-impacted individuals can meet face-to-face with FEMA specialists who can help with the application process. They can complete necessary steps, such as updating addresses, phone numbers and insurance information. Assistants also explain FEMA processes, including how to appeal decisions. FEMA mitigation specialists are also on hand at the center to explain simple ways individuals can reduce risk of loss in the future.

U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) customer service representatives at the recovery center are available to answer program questions and issue disaster loan applications for homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes. SBA offers disaster loans up to $200,000 to homeowners to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed personal property. Businesses and private non-profit organizations of any size may borrow up to $2 million for disaster related losses. Interest rates are as low as 1.875 percent for
homeowners and renters, 3 percent for non-profit organizations and 4 percent for businesses with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.

Homeowners, renters and business owners affected by the storms are encouraged to register for assistance prior to visiting the center by calling the telephone registration line, (800) 621-FEMA (3362). For speech- or hearing-impaired applicants, the TTY number is (800) 462-7585 and Video Relay Service may be accessed at (800) 621-3362. These lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Federal disaster aid was made available to the State of Indiana to supplement state and local recovery efforts in areas affected by severe storms, straight-line winds, and tornadoes from Feb. 29 through March 3 in Clark, Jefferson, Ripley, Scott, Warrick, and Washington counties.
