Last Chance To Visit Four Disaster Recovery Centers

NEW YORK – Hurricane Sandy survivors have until Tuesday evening, Dec. 4, to visit four Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Cumulatively, the centers have provided one-on-one information and assistance to more than 4,370 storm survivors since they opened in early November. Their locations and hours of operation are:

The State of New York and Federal Emergency Management Agency closely monitor visitor traffic at all New York Disaster Recovery Centers. When traffic slows at a certain time, a center may change its hours or come under consideration for possible closure.

Recovery centers are one-stop shops for eligible storm survivors to get face-to-face help as quickly as possible. More may become available as sites are identified and approved. Conditions at individual locations may vary and affect opening times.

Schedule Changes for Disaster Recovery Centers

WARWICK, R.I. – Saturday is the last day of operation for the Hurricane Sandy Disaster Recovery Center in South Kingstown. The Recovery Centers in Westerly and Middletown remain open, but with new operating hours.

The new schedule, starting Saturday, December 1, is as follows:

Union Fire Station (Community Room), 131 Asa Pond Road, South Kingstown, R.I.
Saturday, 8 A.M.-4 P.M. Permanently closed after Saturday.

Misquamicut Fire Station, 65 Crandall Avenue, Westerly, R.I.
Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed on Sundays.
Middletown Police Station (Community Room), 123 Valley Road, Middletown, R.I.
Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed on Sundays.

Specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are at the Disaster Recovery Centers to answer questions, check application status, provide information about rebuilding to lower the risk of damage from future floods, and offer referrals to other programs.

Also at the Recovery Centers are representatives of the U.S. Small Business Administration to assist both individuals and businesses with applications for low interest disaster recovery loans.

If possible, survivors should register with FEMA before visiting a Disaster Recovery Center. FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for medical and dental expenses, funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.

American Sign Language Interpreters Are Available in Disaster Recovery Centers

WINDSOR, Conn. – The Disaster Recovery Centers in Connecticut are equipped to make sure that people with disabilities get the information they need for their recovery from Hurricane Sandy.

In addition to being fully accessible and ready to help people with vision, mobility or hearing disabilities, each center has sign interpreters available for deaf people who use ASL. The schedule for the interpreters is:

Bridgeport: Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Greenwich: Monday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon

Groton: Monday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Disaster Recovery Centers offer one-on-one assistance, and information about recovery resources, low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, flood insurance and mitigation measures.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – State and federal Disaster Recovery Centers in Fairmont (Marion County), Dunlow and Wayne (both in Wayne County) will close permanently at noon on Friday, April 13, officials said Saturday. Two other centers, one in Logan County and one in Lincoln County, will remain open until further notice.

Deadline for Lincoln, Marion and Wayne county residents to register is May 15; for residents of Logan County, the deadline is May 21.
