SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – If you sustained damage from the Nov. 17 tornadoes and have submitted a claim to your insurance company, your insurance settlement may not cover all of your expenses. FEMA says disaster assistance may help cover expenses that arise later.

Apply for FEMA assistance and you may avoid unexpected, uncovered expenses, such as:

  • Your insurance settlement is delayed, but you need to relocate because your home is uninhabitable.
  • Damage in your home is not revealed until the spring when temperatures rise and contractors are able to conduct a more comprehensive inspection of your home’s structure.
  • You exhaust the additional living expenses provided by your insurance company and still need help with your disaster-related temporary housing.

Cover all your bases by applying for FEMA assistance today. It’s quick and easy. You can use any of three ways: online at DisasterAssistance.gov, on a smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov, or by phone at 800-621-FEMA (3362). People who are deaf or hard of hearing and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585.

Not registering with FEMA may disqualify you for assistance that could help with unexpected expenses. You have until Jan. 27, 2014 to register.

Assured Your Recovery Is Insured? Have a Plan B

Springfield, Ill.— While the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Small Business Administration (SBA) may provide valuable grants and loans to disaster survivors for repairing or replacing lost property, disaster assistance may be available through other sources.

The following are valuable resources for survivors of the Nov. 17 tornadoes in Champaign, Douglas, Fayette, Grundy, Jasper, LaSalle, Massac, Pope, Tazewell, Vermilion, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, Will and Woodford counties to receive help their recovery.

  • Survivors can apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Help may be available for Illinois workers, including business owners, who lost employment as a result of the Nov. 17 tornadoes. Applications are available at Illinois Department of Employment Security offices. Survivors can locate their nearest office by calling 800-244-5631 or online at ides.illinois.gov/myoffice. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.
  • Survivors can get free legal help. Low-income survivors facing legal issues can call 844-726-8775, extension 256, to request free legal assistance about issues related to their recovery from the tornadoes. 
  • Childcare-related expenses may be available. FEMA may provide eligible applicants with grants to pay for certain disaster-related childcare costs. The assistance costs may be available if a survivor had to move to a different community where child care costs are more expensive or the disaster caused their usual child care facility to close leaving only a more expensive facility available. For more information, call 800-621-FEMA (3362).
  • Crisis counseling referrals are available. Crisis counseling is available to those in emotional distress following the tornadoes. Survivors can call 800-985-5990, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Find an available nearby rental property through online resources. Visit Nestrent.com or IlHousingSearch.org. Survivors can also call 800-621-FEMA (3362) for recommendations on available rental properties or to ask questions about temporary rental assistance.

Many Forms of Disaster Assistance Available

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Anyone who had a car damaged or destroyed in counties affected by the Nov. 17 Illinois tornadoes may be eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster assistance.

Those who may be eligible include not just residents of the designated counties, but also those who were working or visiting in areas and had damage to their vehicle during the tornadoes.

  • Only those who maintain at least liability insurance will be considered to receive federal disaster assistance to repair or replace their car. Liability coverage is the minimum insurance requirement for Illinois drivers. Liability insurance policies do not cover storm-related damage to their car. Survivors who register must submit proof to FEMA that they maintain liability coverage to be considered for federal disaster assistance to repair or replace their car.
  • Survivors who have a comprehensive policy should first file a claim with their insurance company. Comprehensive policies usually pay for storm-related damages to a car. However, federal disaster assistance may help fill in the gaps for those whose comprehensive insurance coverage does not pay for any or all storm-related damage costs.
  • Survivors need to return a completed Small Business Administration disaster-loan application. After registering with FEMA, the SBA will contact many survivors concerning loan applications. It’s important for survivors to submit their application. Homeowners and renters may be eligible to borrow up to $40,000 to repair or replace personal property, including automobiles damaged or destroyed in the disaster.
  • FEMA grants to repair or replace a car must clear the SBA loan process. A survivor may receive a grant from FEMA to repair or replace their car if insurance is insufficient and they were declined for SBA loan home loan. Grants do not need to be repaid.
  • Keep documents. Federal disaster assistance is reimbursed to survivors only if their car had damage during the Nov. 17 tornadoes. Survivors must submit an itemized document that shows damage to the car is storm-related and a receipt, estimate or verifiable bill of the repair or replacement costs.

FEMA officials advise anyone whose vehicle was damaged during the tornadoes to register for assistance. Survivors in the following counties should register: Champaign, Douglas, Fayette, Grundy, Jasper, La Salle, Massac, Pope, Tazewell, Vermilion, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, Will and Woodford.

Federal Aid Programs for the State of California Declaration

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to the State of California to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by the Rim Fire during the period of August 17 to October 24, 2013.

The President’s action makes federal funding available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the Rim Fire in Tuolumne County.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Stephen M. DeBlasio Sr. has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.  DeBlasio said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

President Declares Disaster for California

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.—Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Survivor Assistance crews, or DSA crews, are now canvassing areas affected by the Nov. 17 Illinois tornadoes to provide information, identify immediate needs, give survivors an opportunity to register for disaster assistance, answer questions related to an individual’s FEMA application status, and provide referrals to other governmental and nongovernmental assistance providers.

Nearly 75 DSA crew members are visiting homes, businesses, organizations and high-traffic locations in affected areas. They also meet with local officials and community leaders to identify disaster-related issues and unmet needs.

“FEMA is sending teams directly to Illinois communities affected by this disaster to expedite the recovery process,” said Donald Keldsen, the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in Illinois. “This staff is equipped to register people on the spot, answer questions about federal assistance and provide referrals for additional help if it’s needed.”

While DSA crews are offering in-person service, it’s important that Illinois survivors remain vigilant about protecting their personal information. For example, residents should always ask for identification. Federal and state officials always have and official photo identification badge clearly visible. If someone represents themselves as a federal or state employee, but does not produce identification, ask to see it.

DSA crew members may offer residents the opportunity to use a tablet computer to register, or ask to enter information on their behalf.  Illinois residents will not be required to share personal information unless they wish a DSA crew member to help them with an in-person registration or answer specific questions about their FEMA application status. Residents are reminded to ask for federal identification before providing personal information.

Disaster survivors in counties designated for FEMA assistance in Illinois can also register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by mobile device at m.fema.gov. If online or mobile access is unavailable, applicants should call the FEMA toll-free Helpline at
800-621-3362.

FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams Blanket Illinois’ Storm-Damaged Areas

LINCROFT, N.J.– The heavy demands of the holiday season can be a busy time for all. Managing family obligations and handling seasonal preparations alongside regular day-to-day activities can make disaster preparedness less of a priority. In fact, the onset of winter is a critical time for safety preparation, and several items that are critical in emergencies also make good holiday gifts.

A weather radio is a recommended purchase, preferably one developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Consumer Electronics Association. These radios broadcast National Weather Service forecasts and severe weather warnings 24 hours a day on the NOAA’s radio network. They cost between $20 and $200. Portable and handheld radios generally cost less than desktop models. FEMA recommends that the radio has an alarm, can run on batteries, solar power or a hand crank, and has an external or wireless output for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or blind, allowing connection to an alarm or other attention-getting device, such as a personal computer or text printer. A solar charging unit for charging and powering electronic devices is also recommended. These range in size from pocket-sized units to fold-out panel arrays and are powered by the sun, making them useful on clear days when electricity is unavailable. Prices start at less than $10 and can exceed $200.

A regular car charger can serve the same purpose. Pricing for these is more closely tied to size, starting at $3 and going up to $70 for multiple-device units. For any charger, make sure that it is properly adapted for the devices you will be using. Cell phones, tablets, cameras and computers have different connection points to external power supplies. More than one unit may be necessary.

Generators can serve as backup power sources in emergencies. A generator that produces a minimum of 4,000-5,000 watts of power is recommended. Contact an electrician to find out how much power your home needs. Generators in the 5,000-8,000 watt range can cost as little as $600 and as much as $4,000, and some may require additional accessories which will cost extra. Portable generators cost less than stationary standby models.

To cook food or heat water, pick up a camping stove. These outdoor-only stoves use propane, butane or other solid fuels. Butane- and cartridge-fueled stoves are less expensive ($10 to $50) than their propane-powered counterparts, but they usually only have one burner and those fuels are less effective in cold weather. Dual-burner stoves are more likely to run on propane and cost between $30 and $100. Single-burner propane stoves range from $20 to $60. You’ll also want to have enough fuel on hand for your stove. Small propane tanks cost between $3 and $6, packs of butane cans cost between $6 and $12 depending on the size of the pack, and solid fuel cartridge packs cost between $8 and $20.

Tea kettles are better for boiling water than pots or pans because they are enclosed and the metal interiors allow for more even heating. Most kettles suited for outdoor use are made of stainless steel, enamel or aluminum. These range in price from $15 to $75.

Ready-made first-aid kits can be purchased for use in the home or car. The Red Cross sells its own at www.redcrossstore.org and many retail stores also carry them. A pre-assembled kit with enough supplies for a family costs less than $40. Visit www.ready.gov/build-a-kit for lists of recommended safety kit items.

If you need both hands free to work, search or dig in darkness, consider a head lamp. Most head lamps are mounted on an elastic strap that can be wrapped around a hat or worn directly on the wearer’s head. A consumer-grade lamp can be purchased for less than $100.

LINCROFT, N.J. — New Jersey residents who registered with FEMA for disaster assistance prior to the registration deadline of May 1 need to keep in touch with FEMA as they recover and rebuild.

Disaster assistance may be available for losses not covered by insurance. Survivors should get in touch with FEMA as soon as they receive their insurance settlement. Be sure to have the registration number FEMA assigned to your application at hand.

Survivors who registered for disaster assistance before the May 1 deadline may check the status of their applications online at www.disasterassistance.gov or call the FEMA Helpline, 800-621-3362, as soon as receive their insurance settlement.

If you received a letter from FEMA saying you were not eligible for assistance, one reason may be that you had not yet received an insurance settlement and it could not be factored into your application.

If you have already filed an appeal of the original FEMA decision, you are entitled to amend your appeal based on the insurance settlement you received.

CHICAGO – With an ominous Thursday forecast for the Ohio Valley that includes severe storms, heavy rains and strong winds, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region V encourages everyone to get prepared.

“Even though temperatures are dropping as we approach the winter months, severe storms are still a risk,” FEMA Region V Administrator Andrew Velasquez III said. “Knowing what to do before the storm will help keep you and your family safe.”

Individuals living throughout the Ohio Valley, which includes east and southeast Indiana, and central, south central and southwest Ohio, should follow the instructions of state and local officials and listen to local radio or TV stations for updated emergency information related to this storm system.
