Disaster Recovery Center Hours Change Saturday

DULUTH, Minn. — State agencies, local governments and certain private nonprofits in Cass and Itasca counties two weeks remaining to file their official requests for federal public assistance to help recover from severe storms and flooding on June 14-21, 2012.

 

The deadline to file a Request for Public Assistance (RPA) is August 25, 2012.

 

Filing such a request with the State is the first step in the process of applying for federal reimbursements under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance (PA) Grant Program. Applicants must file RPAs within 30 days of a presidential disaster declaration. President Obama issued a major disaster declaration for public assistance on July 6. Cass and Itasca counties were designated on July 26.

 

PA grants are obligated to the State to reimburse applicants for expenses they incurred while taking emergency measures to protect lives and property such as debris removal, search and rescue operations and sandbagging. Expenses for repairs to flood-damaged facilities such as roads, bridges, utilities and other public infrastructure may also be covered.

 

Although the program is oriented to public entities, private nonprofit organizations may apply directly to FEMA via the RPA for uninsured costs of debris removal and emergency protective measures. Additionally, nonprofits may qualify for FEMA assistance to make infrastructure repairs if they provide critical services such as communications, power, water, emergency response or medical treatment.

August 25 is the Deadline for Cass and Itasca Counties to Request Federal Public Assistance

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jerseyans may use low-interest disaster loans from the Small Business Administration to better protect their home or business structures from future disasters.

Home and business owners can choose to borrow up to an additional 20 percent of the approved loan amount for mitigation improvements including building elevation, retaining walls, seawalls, sump pumps and relocating utilities.

Survivors can indicate on their SBA loan applications that they want to apply for additional mitigation funds and specify how they would protect their home or business.

Homeowners can receive loans up to $200,000 to repair or replace damaged property while businesses can receive loans up to $2 million.

SBA disaster loans for building code requirements can increase the total of the loan up to 100 percent.

The deadline to apply for a low-interest SBA disaster loan is Jan. 30.

SBA is the primary source of federal funds for long-term rebuilding. In most cases, Federal Emergency Management Agency funds will not cover all of the repair needs of homeowners. Money for a temporary rental home is the form of help FEMA largely provides so obtaining a low-interest SBA disaster loan is a survivor’s best option for repairing their home, replacing property and mitigating their home.

Improve Protection Of Home Or Business With SBA Loan

TRENTON, N.J. — The quickest way to get a Small Business Administration disaster loan approved  is filling out an online application.

The online application is the most user-friendly way for homeowners, renters and business survivors    of Hurricane Sandy to request a loan from the SBA. An electronic loan application is a convenient alternative to visiting a disaster recovery center or mailing a paper loan application.

Regardless of the method, the deadline is the same:  Jan. 30, 2013.

There’s no guess work with an online application. The program checks for errors and prompts for more information when needed. To apply online, visit https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

The long-term, low-interest loans are designed to fund repairs to and replacement of homes, personal property and businesses. About 85 percent of all SBA disaster loans go to homeowners and renters.

TRENTON, N.J. — The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state of New Jersey will continue to help the dwindling number of families needing transitional sheltering assistance during a two-week extension of the program.

FEMA has continuously been in contact with households in the transitional sheltering program to determine their housing needs and how to help them. From those contacts, FEMA and the state of New Jersey recognized the declining need for the program.

Approximately 1,300 households currently using the program have told FEMA that they have worked out longer-term housing. Transitional sheltering is a short-term solution for housing and the extension will end Jan. 26.

Since the program began on Nov. 1, 2012, more than 5,400 people have stayed in more than 430 hotels and motels. The average stay is 25 days.

FEMA provides disaster survivors with rental resources and referrals to partner agencies to help with temporary housing needs.

Transitional Sheltering Assistance Winds Down

TRENTON, N.J. — If your house is not livable and you have insurance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency may be able to provide temporary housing or rent under certain circumstances. 

FEMA may be able to help if any of these situations apply:

  • You used all the rent money that your insurance company provided under Alternative Living Expenses coverage and your home is not ready for occupancy.
  • Your insurance does not include Alternative Living Expenses.
  • Your insurance settlement for Hurricane Sandy has not arrived.

Register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or m.fema.gov; visit a disaster recovery center; or call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585) or 711/VRS.

If you already registered with FEMA and were told that your losses appeared to be covered by insurance, you can request rental assistance to get you through an insurance delay. Write a letter to FEMA noting that the settlement has been delayed at least 30 days.

If Insurance Is Slow, Talk With FEMA

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to Pennsylvania to supplement the commonwealth and local recovery efforts in the area affected by Hurricane Sandy during the period of Oct. 26 to Nov. 8, 2012.

The President’s action makes federal funding available to the commonwealth and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Hurricane Sandy in Bedford, Bucks, Cameron, Dauphin, Forest, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Potter, Somerset, Sullivan, and Wyoming counties. 

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Thomas J. McCool has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.  McCool said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the commonwealth and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

TRENTON, N.J. — The Small Business Administration’s business recovery center in Bergen County has relocated.

The center at the Bergen Community College has relocated to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster recovery center in the Bergen County Plaza.

The business recovery center is staffed by SBA customer service representatives who provide help to business owners seeking disaster assistance for losses caused by Hurricane Sandy. Individuals can also receive help at the facility.

SBA Business Recovery Center has Moved to Bergen County Plaza

TRENTON, N.J. — If you’re a Hurricane Sandy survivor and have questions about a letter you received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, need help finding a place to stay, or have any concerns about your recovery, a visit to a disaster recovery center can help.

FEMA staff is available at centers throughout New Jersey to provide clarification to your letters, assist you with finding a temporary home if your primary residence was damaged or destroyed, check on the status of your application for assistance, or refer you to other agencies that may provide additional help.                                                                                              

Also, you can consult with U.S. Small Business Administration customer service representatives about low-interest disaster loans to repair or rebuild your home and FEMA mitigation specialists about cost-effective rebuilding and repair techniques to reduce property damages in future disasters.

New Jersey centers will continue to provide assistance for survivors during the holiday season. Normal center hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday until Saturday, Dec. 29. Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. They will be closed New Year’s Day. Normal hours will resume Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013.

New Jersey Disaster Recovery Centers Assist Hurricane Survivors

TRENTON, N.J. — A Hudson County disaster recovery center will close this Saturday.

The center located at the Bayonne City Museum in Bayonne will close at 7 p.m., December 29.

State and federal officials have been paying close attention to how many applicants are visiting centers throughout the state. Over the past weeks, the number of individuals seeking help at the  Bayonne center has dropped, indicating the information needs of survivors in the area are being met.                                                                                                                

Hurricane Sandy survivors in the Bayonne area can still visit any center across the state.

Meanwhile, the center located at Bay Head Fire Station No. 1 in Bay Head has changed its hours to 9 a.m. until 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday to be consistent with centers across the state.

Centers allow residents to speak one-on-one with recovery representatives. FEMA program specialists are available to provide registration and other information and to answer questions at the centers. These include mitigation specialists who can provide guidance on cost-effective rebuilding and repair techniques to reduce property damage in future disasters.

In addition to FEMA program specialists, customer service representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available to answer questions about the SBA low-interest disaster loan program, and to assist with disaster loan applications.

DRC locations may change. The nearest open offices can be found online at FEMA.gov/DRC.

It is not necessary to visit a center to receive disaster assistance.
