$141 Million in Federal Funding Supports Suffolk County’s Sandy Recovery

NEW YORK — FEMA has approved more than $141 million in Hurricane Sandy assistance to fund emergency efforts and help repair and rebuild public infrastructure in Suffolk County.

To date, local, state and federal recovery officials have identified 608 projects from applicants in Suffolk County that are eligible for Public Assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The $141,230,254 million represents 90 percent of the cost of approved PA projects that will be reimbursed by FEMA. The state manages the PA program and disburses funding.

A breakdown by category of work:

Roads and Bridges $ 14,656,932

Buildings and Equipment $ 3,348,296

Parks, Recreational and Other Facilities $ 18,431,381

The Town of Babylon was awarded more than $2.5 million as a result of the damages to the Cedar Beach Marina, Overlook Beach Boardwalk, and Venetian Shores Park.

More than $3.8 million was approved for the Town of Brookhaven for debris removal. These costs were incurred by the highway and waste management departments.

$915,791 is included in the funding for Suffolk County for permanent work that will reduce or eliminate repeat disaster damage.

NEW YORK — FEMA has approved more than $12 million in Hurricane Sandy assistance to fund emergency efforts and help repair and rebuild public infrastructure in Rockland County.

To date, local, state and federal recovery officials have identified 134 projects from applicants in Rockland County that are eligible for Public Assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

NEW YORK — More than $2.2 billion in federal aid has been approved to reimburse state, local and tribal governments for Sandy-related response and recovery efforts to date in New York. This figure includes over $31 million for permanent work to protect against future disaster damage.

Public Assistance grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency provide reimbursement for some costs of emergency response. So far, 2,907 grants have been approved, including $575 million for debris removal, $1.1 billion for protective measures, $41 million for roads and bridges, $934 million for water control facilities, $89 million for public buildings, $356 million for public utilities and $70.8 million for parks and recreational facilities.

FEMA Go Green Initiative Team wins 2013 DHS Sustainable Practices Award

NEW YORK – The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Go Green Initiative Team at the joint field office for New York Sandy recovery was recently recognized for its success in implementing sustainable practices. The team won the “Green Dream Team Award” from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Sustainable Practices Award program.

The annual award, which received 17 nominations from federal departments and agencies, recognizes the FEMA team for outstanding achievement in reaching their sustainability goals as outlined in Executive Order 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance.

A panel of federal sustainability leaders selected the FEMA team because it presented a “superior quality project reflecting the highest ideals of [our] sustainability efforts,” according to Chris Cummiskey, senior sustainability officer for DHS. “I am impressed with the leadership and teamwork that helped institute sustainability practices into a response and recovery effort.”

Part of the team’s initiatives included encouraging the use of mass transit and issuing fewer rental vehicles, resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the 75-person team oversaw a 51 percent reduction in paper usage and took energy conservation measures like installing light sensors in restrooms at the office. These sustainability practices are responsible for an estimated savings of $25 million.

“Even as we coordinate response and recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy, we must be good stewards of both the taxpayer’s money and the environment,” said Willie Nunn, FEMA’s federal coordinating officer in New York. “Our Go Green Initiative Team set high goals and executed a strong sustainability strategy that is now being recognized by DHS. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve been able to accomplish so far.”

The FEMA “Green Dream Team” is now being considered for a 2013 GreenGov Presidential Award, a program led by the White House Council on Environmental Quality that recognizes the efforts of federal agencies to lead sustainability practices.

FEMA advisory flood-risk data maps released for Rockland County, N.Y.

NEW YORK–The Federal Emergency Management Agency has released Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps (ABFEs) for Hudson River communities in Rockland County, N.Y. The ABFEs reflect the best available data from the most recent analysis of coastal flood hazards along the Hudson River and are based on sound science and engineering. ABFEs are derived from more recent data and improved study methodologies compared to the data and analyses used to prepare the existing Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).

ABFEs will help Rockland communities along the Hudson River better understand flood hazard conditions and rebuild safer and stronger for future events such as Hurricane Sandy. The ABFEs for Rockland are the result of requests by local government and advocacy by elected officials for FEMA to develop ABFEs for Hudson River communities in Rockland County. As a result FEMA initiated a new project to process storm surge data and prepared the requested

ABFE maps to support rebuilding and recovery in those communities.

FEMA encourages communities in Rockland County to use this information in instances where base flood elevations have increased and/or where new Special Flood Hazard Areas are shown on the ABFEs. Using these ABFEs will help state and local officials with their rebuilding and recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy and will guide property and business owners of damaged or destroyed property with their own decisions about rebuilding.

2013 National Hurricane Preparedness Week, Pledge to Prepare

NEW YORK – As hurricane season approaches, pledge to protect your family, friends and businesses by knowing your risk, taking action and being an example.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration have partnered again this year to promote National Hurricane Preparedness Week.

National Hurricane Preparedness Week – May 26 through June 1 – highlights the importance of planning ahead to protect our families and secure our communities. Hurricane season is June 1 through Nov. 30.

“I’m sure New Yorkers who saw Sandy’s impact know the importance of preparing for hurricane season,” said FEMA’s Federal Coordinating Officer Michael F. Byrne. “Everyone should take the pledge and use social media to let their friends know how they can prepare against disasters.”

Recent studies show that many people use social media during a disaster to let relatives and friends know they are safe. Social media provides the perfect platform for preparedness. Pledge to use it and to and take the following steps:

Know your risk: Understand how hurricanes could impact you, your family and your community. When you understand your risk, you are more apt to know how to prepare. Check weather forecasts regularly, sign up for local alerts from your emergency management officials and get a NOAA Weather Radio.

Take action: Pledge to develop an emergency plan and practice how and where you will evacuate if instructed by local emergency management officials. Post your plan in your home where friends and family can see it. Understand the National Hurricane Center watches and warnings. Purchase flood insurance now – there’s a 30-day waiting period and download FEMA’s mobile app so you can access important safety tips on what to do before, during and after a hurricane. Stay informed with FEMA’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

Be an example: Once you have pledged and taken action, be an example by talking to your family, friends, colleagues and neighbors on what you have done to prepare and inspire others.

FEMA offers rebuilding advice at area home improvement stores

NEW YORK – People whose property was damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy can get rebuilding advice from a Federal Emergency Management Agency hazard mitigation specialist. The specialists are knowledgeable about cleanup and building safer and smarter to avoid future losses.

FEMA specialists will be in Suffolk County at Home Depot stores at 1881 Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore and 5025 Jericho Turnpike in Commack. They will also be available at the Lowe’s store in Suffolk County at 2796 Route 112 in Medford.

Mitigation specialists will be in the home improvement stores from Thursday May 16 to Tuesday May 21. Survivors can get rebuilding information at the following times:

Thursday through Saturday (May 16 – May 18) 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Sunday (May 19) 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Monday (May 20) 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday (May 21) 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Information on the National Flood Insurance Program and Advisory Base Flood Elevation Maps,

NEW YORK – The disaster recovery center in Long Beach, N.Y., remains open as a full-service survivor resource that is staffed by state and federal specialists.

Hurricane Sandy survivors can visit the center at the Recreation Center and Ice Arena, 700 Magnolia Blvd., Long Beach, N.Y., 11561. The center is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Individuals may register for FEMA help online at DisasterAssistance.gov or via smartphone or tablet by going to m.fema.gov or by downloading the FEMA app.

Federal disaster assistance can include money for rent, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.
