Federal Disaster Aid in Michigan Tops $51 Million

WARREN, Mich. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that more than $51.8 million in federal disaster grants and loans has been approved for Michigan survivors of the Aug. 11-13 storms and flooding.

As of close of business Oct. 9:

58,845 Michigan residents in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne registered for federal disaster assistance;

More than $35.9 million has been approved for housing assistance, including rental assistance and home repair costs;

More than $11.1 million has been approved to cover other essential disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses, lost personal possessions and child care;

More than $4.8 million in low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters, businesses and private nonprofit organizations has been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration;

More than 100 disaster survivor assistance specialists are strategically positioned throughout the affected communities to explain the types of disaster assistance available;

1,159 residents have visited four disaster recovery centers in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties;

430 housing inspectors in the field have completed more than 41,005 inspections of damaged properties; and

209 people have received rebuilding advice from mitigation specialists located at four home improvement big-box stores in the affected communities.

FEMA Mitigation Teams Offer Free Rebuilding Information

WARREN, Mich. – Residents who want to reduce the risk of property damage from future storms have the opportunity to meet with mitigation specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Mitigation specialists are in Wayne County to provide rebuilding information from 8 a.m. to
6 p.m. Oct. 6 through Oct. 19 at the Walmart Supercenter, 7555 Telegraph Road in Taylor. They will be available every day except Thursdays.

Residents can get free publications to help homeowners, renters and business owners protect their properties against damaging winds, floods and fires, and reduce damages from future events. Mitigation measures may help protect electrical systems, furnaces and other appliances. 

Information about how to register with FEMA for disaster assistance also will be provided.

Residents can register at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or via Web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov. Applicants may also call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). TTY users may call 1-800-462-7585. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. EDT seven days a week until further notice.

FEMA is providing mitigation information in coordination with the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management Homeland Security Division, and Wayne County Emergency Management. Publications will be available in English and Spanish.

FEMA Distributes $1.8 Million To Support Mississippi Recovery

PURVIS, Miss. – More than $1.8 million in federal disaster assistance is in the hands of survivors of the recent storms, tornadoes and flooding in Mississippi. This includes more than $1.3 million for housing assistance and $489,523 for other needs.

While there is still much work to be done, this money contributes significantly to the recovery effort from the recent disaster.

Here are some numbers at a glance as of midnight 2/26/13:

  • 2,404 Mississippians have registered for assistance at 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585) or through the online application site at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or on their smartphone at m.fema.gov.
  • 988 Mississippians have visited the five Disaster Recovery Centers for information and help about the disaster recovery process. The centers are open in Forrest, Lamar, Marion and Wayne counties.          
  • 1,405 home inspections have been completed by the 10 FEMA-contracted inspectors in the field—a 93-percent completion rate.
  • 1,218 disaster-loan applications have been issued by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The SBA has staff members at every FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Center in Mississippi to provide one-on-one help to those seeking disaster assistance.
  • FEMA is working with state and other eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations in Forrest, Lamar, Marion and Wayne counties to identify and reimburse 75 percent of disaster-related costs associated of emergency protective measures, debris removal, and the repair and restoration of damaged infrastructure.

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — More than $6.8 million in federal funds have been approved for residents and businesses in West Virginia recovering from the recent storms and flooding.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved more than $4.48 million in grants to individuals and households in need of assistance. The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved low-interest disaster loans to homeowners and businesses for more than $2.37 million.

Five Disaster Recovery Centers, staffed with state and federal disaster-assistance experts, were set up in Lincoln, Logan, Marion and Wayne (2) counties to help guide survivors through the recovery process and to answer questions about state and federal programs. The last operating DRC, in Logan, is set to close at noon on Friday, May 11.

Nearly $1.3 million in additional funds have been requested through FEMA’s Public Assistance Program, which shoulders at least 75 percent of the costs of debris removal, emergency protective measures, repair and replacement of publicly owned buildings, roads, bridges and other infrastructure damaged in the storms and floods. Help also might be available under the program for certain nonprofits that provide services of a governmental nature, like private schools, hospitals, volunteer fire departments and utilities.

Those affected by the storms and floods of February 29 through March 5 have until May 15 to register with FEMA for assistance. For those who suffered loss or damage from the flooding of March 15 through March 31, the deadline to register is May 21. Call FEMA’s Help Line at 800-621-3362 or log onto DisasterAssistance.gov. The TTY number is 800-462-7585. To register via any web-enabled smartphone or other PDA, log onto m.fema.gov.

Counties designated for FEMA’s Individuals and Households Assistance Program are Harrison, Logan, Lincoln, Marion, Mingo, Preston, Taylor and Wayne. Counties designated for Public Assistance Program are Doddridge, Harrison, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Mingo, Monongalia, Preston, Ritchie, Roane, Taylor and Wayne.
