WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that, in line with the request from the Governor of Texas, the emergency disaster declaration for the State of Texas, declared on April 19, 2013, has been expanded to allow individuals and households affected by the explosion in McLennan County, access to Individual Assistance grants. 

The President’s action makes housing and other assistance available to eligible individuals in McLennan County.  Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs; medical, dental, and funeral expenses; and personal property, transportation and other forms of assistance to help individuals recover from the effects of the disaster. 

Today’s announcement further supports the response efforts previously approved to assist with emergency work to protect lives and property, public health and safety. 

Individuals who sustained losses as a result of the explosion in McLennan County can begin applying for assistance by registering online at http://www.disasterassistance.gov, by web enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).  Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services can call 1-800-621-3362.

President Expands Emergency Declaration for Texas to Include Assistance to Individuals

NEW YORK – Hurricane Sandy survivors have until April 30 to visit four Disaster Recovery Centers in New York City.

Specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration are available to provide:

  • Guidance regarding disaster recovery
  • Status of applications being processed by FEMA
  • Clarification of any written correspondence received
  • Referrals to agencies that may provide further assistance

A few days left for survivors to visit 4 Disaster Recovery Centers in NYC

TRENTON, N.J.–Tell your friends and neighbors who have not registered for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that the last day to register is May 1, 2013. Make sure they know the facts about FEMA registration; many Hurricane Sandy survivors are eligible for disaster assistance and just may not know it.

With about two weeks left to register, here are facts about FEMA assistance:

  • FEMA assistance does NOT affect benefits from other federal programs, such as Social Security benefits, taxes, food stamps or Medicaid.
  • FEMA assistance is available for renters; it is not exclusive to homeowners.
  • FEMA provides grants; it does not make loans. These grants do NOT have to be repaid, and they are NOT considered taxable income.
  • You may be eligible for reimbursement for repairs to your home, even if the repairs are already completed.
  • You may be eligible for FEMA assistance even if you have flood or homeowner’s insurance.
  • Income is NOT a consideration for eligibility for FEMA assistance.
  • A grant you may receive does not take away from another survivor’s assistance; FEMA has sufficient funding to assist all eligible survivors with their eligible disaster-related needs.
  • There is no paperwork to register with FEMA; the process normally takes between 15 and 20 minutes.

The rule of thumb is that if you’re unsure if you are eligible for assistance, call 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA) or go to DisasterAssistance.gov. If you have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY,call 1-800-462-7585directly. If using 711 or Video Relay Service, call 1-800-621-3362.

Although the assistance process may continue after the deadline, May 1 will be the last day to call or go online to register for FEMA and apply for SBA physical damage disaster assistance.

FEMA grants cover expenses for temporary housing, home repairs, replacement of damaged personal property and other disaster-related needs such as medical, dental or transportation costs not covered by insurance or other programs. The objective is to make damaged dwellings safe, sanitary and functional.

Some applicants may receive a loan application for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) after registering with FEMA. The SBA provides low-interest disaster loans to renters, homeowners and businesses of all sizes. No one is obligated to take out a loan, but if they don’t complete the application they may not be considered for other federal grant programs.

The SBA may lend up to $200,000 to repair or replace homes and up to $40,000 to repair or replace personal property. Also, up to $2 million is available for businesses for their uncompensated disaster losses.

For more information about the SBA, call the SBA Customer Service Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (EDT) Monday through Friday, at 1-800-659-2955. Survivors may apply online at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Officials want to encourage those residents who may be hesitant to register for disaster assistance. Federal taxes are appropriated specifically to fund disaster assistance. Also, the assistance one individual may receive will not take away from another applicant’s federal assistance funds.

PURVIS, Miss. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency are reminding those affected by the February tornadoes and flooding that they have only a short time left to register for assistance.

The deadline for registering is April 15 for residents of Forrest, Greene, Jefferson Davis, Lamar, Marion, Perry and Wayne counties.

Assistance is available for homeowners, renters and businesses who suffered loss or damage as a result of the disaster.

“The first step in getting help is registering with FEMA,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Terry Quarles. “Even if you signed up with state, county or local agencies, that doesn’t get you registered with FEMA. If you are unsure whether you qualify, call FEMA and let us determine your eligibility.”

Register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov. From a web-enabled cell phone or other wireless device, visit m.fema.gov.

Or call FEMA’s toll-free Helpline at 800-621-3362 to speak to a representative and supply some basic information. People who register may be sent a disaster loan application from the U.S. Small Business Administration. No one is obligated to take out a loan, according to the SBA, but filling out the application is essential for qualifying for further federal assistance.

Applicants wish to take out an SBA loan may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application via SBA’s secure website. The SBA toll-free number is (800)-659-2955 or TTY 800-877-8339. TRENTON, N.J. — Hurricane Sandy survivors who had storm-related damages in New Jersey have just two weeks left to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Federal disaster assistance applications are due by Monday, April 1.

April 1 is also the deadline to return applications to the U.S. Small Business Administration for low-interest disaster loans, which is the primary source of federal funds for long-term rebuilding. Survivors who applied for federal disaster assistance are urged to stay in touch with FEMA and SBA. Applicants should notify FEMA and SBA of changes to their mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses.
