TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey renters who had losses during Hurricane Sandy may be eligible to receive federal disaster assistance to replace damaged contents.

Renters can receive up to $40,000 in low-interest disaster home loans from the Small Business Administration for personal property losses. Loan applications are due no later than Monday, April 1.

No one is required to accept a loan offer. Renters may be referred for Federal Emergency Management Agency grants if they are not approved for an SBA disaster home loan.

The simplest way to complete the application is online by using the SBA’s electronic loan application. Go to DisasterLoan.SBA.gov/ELA. Renters: Complete and Return SBA Applications

TRENTON, N.J. — Hurricane Sandy survivors who had storm-related damages in New Jersey have just two weeks left to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Federal disaster assistance applications are due by Monday, April 1.

April 1 is also the deadline to return applications to the U.S. Small Business Administration for low-interest disaster loans, which is the primary source of federal funds for long-term rebuilding. Survivors can apply for an SBA disaster home or business loans by filling out an online application at DisasterLoan.SBA.gov/ela.                                                               

Survivors who applied for federal disaster assistance are urged to stay in touch with FEMA and SBA. Applicants should notify FEMA and SBA of changes to their mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses.

Survivors can register online and check on the status of their applications at DisasterAssistance.gov, via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. They also can call 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services can call 800-621-3362. Recovery assistants remain available daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

There are nine disaster recovery centers open in Atlantic, Cape May, Hudson, Monmouth and Ocean counties. FEMA staff is available at the centers to provide clarification to letters, assist survivors with finding a temporary home if their primary residence was damaged or destroyed, check on the status of applications for assistance or refer survivors to other agencies that may provide additional help. Two Weeks Left To Register For Federal Disaster Assistance

NEW YORK – New York renters may be eligible for additional grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. To find out if renters qualify, they must complete and submit their disaster loan application from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

No one has to accept an SBA disaster loan. But information provided on that loan application may be used to help determine eligibility for a variety of FEMA programs that can help renters rebuild their lives.

“Renters are tightly woven into the fabric of New York and their recovery is crucial to the city’s recovery,” said Michael F. Byrne, FEMA’s federal coordinating officer in New York. “Many  renters have registered with FEMA and many of them are receiving help now.”

Renters, like homeowners, may be eligible for FEMA’s Other Needs Assistance, designed to help survivors with uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs caused by the disaster. It’s important for survivors to understand that they must complete and return their SBA loan application in order to be eligible for Other Needs Assistance grants.

These grants can be used for:

  • Replacement or repair of necessary personal property lost or damaged in the disaster, household items such as room furnishings or appliances, and tools and equipment required by the self-employed for their jobs
  • Primary vehicles and approved second vehicles damaged by the disaster
  • Disaster-related medical and dental expenses
  • Disaster-related funeral and burial expenses

Renters who do want an SBA loan may be eligible for a loan up to $40,000 for personal property losses.

The deadline to apply for FEMA assistance or an SBA disaster loan is March 29, 2013.

PURVIS, Miss. – The Disaster Recovery Center in Lamar Park at 226 Pinewood Dr. will close Friday, March 15, at 6 p.m., according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. 

One other DRC in Mississippi will remain open at the Ben McNair Recreation Center, 300 North 12th Avenue in Hattiesburg. People who are unable to visit the Lamar Park facility before it closes can talk to disaster specialists at the Ben McNair center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday until further notice.

At the DRC, applicants and others with questions about disaster recovery can meet face-to-face with state and federal specialists who can provide information and answer questions about storm-related assistance. Also on hand at the DRC are representatives from the US Small Business Administration who can help survivors understand and complete applications for low-interest disaster loans.

Last Chance to Visit Disaster Recovery Center in Petal – Others Remain Open

PURVIS, Miss. – Survivors of last month’s tornadoes, storms and flooding should know U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loan applications are not just for businesses; they are also for renters and homeowners. Most disaster loans go to individuals and families and represent a major source of federal funding for disaster home repair and reconstruction.

By submitting an SBA loan application, survivors may have access to the full range of disaster assistance. Interest rates may be as low as 1.688 percent with terms up to 30 years. If SBA does not approve someone – or approves a small loan that doesn’t cover all of recovery needs – a survivor may be referred to other grant programs to replace essential household items, replace, repair or store vehicles, or pay for other serious disaster-related needs.

SBA loans can be of vital assistance to renters; many of whom may not carry insurance. The SBA can help renters replace their essential items. Renters, as well as homeowners, may borrow up to $40,000 to repair or replace clothing, furniture, cars or appliances damaged or destroyed in the disaster.

The SBA can approve a loan for the repair or replacement of a home up to $200,000. Survivors may apply insurance settlements to their disaster loan. The opportunity an SBA disaster loan provides may be lost if disaster survivors wait past the application deadline.

A disaster loan also can help when a renter’s or homeowner’s insurance settlement falls short of covering assessed damages. An SBA low-interest loan can cover most uninsured costs. Survivors do not need to settle with their insurance company before applying for the SBA loan. By submitting the loan application, loan money may be available to renters and homeowners when it is needed most.

Of the more than 1,310 low-interest SBA disaster loan applications sent to Mississippi storm survivors, fewer than 130 have been completed and returned. FEMA registrants are urged to complete and return their applications as soon as possible.

The deadline for Mississippi storm survivors to apply for both FEMA assistance and an SBA loan is April 15, 2013. Loans do not have to be accepted but the applications may open doors to additional assistance.

PURVIS, Miss. – Anyone seeking disaster assistance who does not return their U.S. Small Business Administration loan application could be throwing money away.

Officials from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency urge disaster assistance applicants – renters, homeowners and business owners – to understand the application is a critical step in determining eligibility for all forms of assistance.

The number one mistake people make is assuming SBA packets are only for businesses or simply choosing to ignore the application because they do not want to take out a loan. The application is important; it gives FEMA the information needed to get the proper aid to the disaster survivor.

“SBA loans are an affordable means to pay for up to 100 percent of your uninsured disaster-related losses,” said Jack Camp, SBA spokesperson. “Completing the application is free and easy and you are not obligated to accept a loan if one is offered.”

If a disaster survivor does not qualify for a low-interest loan, completing the forms can be a bridge to additional disaster grant programs. These may include items not normally covered under the SBA disaster loan programs, such as medical and dental bills, funeral expenses and disaster debris removal.

A FEMA grant may be just the beginning of disaster assistance to eligible survivors.

FEMA grants address survivors’ immediate disaster-related needs. They may cover disaster-related expenses such as essential home repairs, replacement of personal property, transportation or the rental of equipment.

“Grants are great, but they don’t cover everything,” said Camp. SBA loans remain the primary source of long-term recovery aid. SBA loans can help survivors fully recover after a disaster.
