TRENTON, N.J. — Hurricane Sandy survivors need to complete the application for continued temporary rental assistance and avoid interruptions of funds for an apartment, house or other temporary home.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency mails forms to survivors receiving temporary rental assistance that must be completed and returned to remain eligible. Survivors can request new forms by calling 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-877-8339 if the original is lost.

Temporary rental assistance may be provided while displaced survivors are working to find a permanent housing solution. Although it is not automatic and available in three month increments, assistance may be available up to 18 months from the Oct. 30, 2012 federal disaster declaration or the program maximum, whichever comes first. That’s why it is important for survivors to develop permanent housing plans. Returning to a permanent home is a significant recovery milestone.

The application for continued rental assistance must be filled out completely, signed and returned along with the following documents:

  • A copy of the lease agreement signed by the applicant and applicant’s landlord
  • Rent receipts showing that the funds have been used for rental assistance
  • A current income statement, such as a paycheck stub or bank statement

Disaster Assistance Tops $66 Million in Jefferson Parish

Hurricane Isaac Six Months Later: $500 Million in Recovery Dollars – and Counting

BATON ROUGE, La. – In the nearly six months since Hurricane Isaac thrashed Louisiana, recovery has progressed for survivors, businesses and communities.

Below is a snapshot from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of the state and federal assistance dollars approved to date and some milestones reached since the Aug. 29 disaster declaration:

$506.3 million

 

Eligible Louisianians and their communities have been approved for state and federal assistance totaling $506,308,559.

 

$416.5 million

The FEMA-administered National Flood Insurance Program has paid $416,486,815 on claims from policyholders in Louisiana.

 

$215.6 million

FEMA has obligated $215,568,977 to cover 75 percent of the costs incurred by the state and local communities for repairs to storm-damaged infrastructure, removal of storm-related debris and for measures taken to protect people before, during and after the hurricane – including search and rescue, law enforcement, shelters and emergency care.

 

$160.7 million

 

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $160,690,700 in low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses throughout the disaster area.

 

$129.9 million

 

FEMA and the state have approved $129,863,867 in disaster assistance for Louisianians through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program, which helps eligible applicants with emergency home repairs; uninsured personal property losses; and medical, dental and funeral expenses caused by the disaster. It also helps cover other disaster-related expenses.

 

$7.4 million

FEMA awarded the state a $7.4 million grant to fund a Disaster Case Management Program, which will help Hurricane Isaac survivors who have serious unmet needs even after receiving state and federal disaster assistance.

FEMA grants of $6,845,882 for Crisis Counseling provided trained counselors to help adults and children in the 26 parishes designated for Individual Assistance work through post-disaster emotional stress.

FEMA housing inspectors completed 141,186 home inspections, the important first step in determining eligibility for housing assistance.

 

Survivors at 117,540 homes, schools, and community- and faith-based organizations were contacted by the more than 300 FEMA Community Relations specialists who responded to Hurricane Isaac.

Storm survivors numbering 41,328 visited Disaster Recovery Centers. The first of 40 centers opened Sept. 1, just one day after the Individual Assistance designation.

During the 10 weeks of the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program, 2,294 storm survivors and families stayed in hotels on an emergency basis. FEMA paid the hotels for the cost of the rooms and taxes as survivors worked out alternative housing plans.

 

FEMA specialists numbering 1,753 deployed from around the United States to help Louisiana respond to and recover from Hurricane Isaac. FEMA teams continue to work with Whole Community partners to advance the recovery effort and mitigate against future hazards.

More than 400 AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and FEMA Corps members assisted Louisianians in shelters, volunteer centers and neighborhoods, and helped survivors and communities clean up and rebuild after the storm.

More than 150 voluntary agencies called on their volunteers, some from throughout the United States, to provide one-on-one help to Isaac survivors in a range of programs and services. Many have joined the long-term recovery effort to meet the needs of survivors that go beyond state and federal assistance dollars.

New Jersey Disaster Recovery Centers Closed Saturday

WINDSOR, Conn. — Hurricane Sandy survivors may now be able to use temporary rental assistance funds to help pay for a security deposit, the Federal Emergency Management Agency reported today.

Survivors may use up to one month of FEMA rent money to cover required security deposits. Those who need more help with rent can show a security deposit receipt to support a request for additional assistance. Survivors must also show a continuing need. This money may not be used to pay for telephone or television service or utilities. For more information, contact FEMA’s toll-free Helpline at 800-621-3362.

Federal and state officials encourage residents of Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven and New London counties and the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribal Nation located within New London County to apply for assistance as soon as possible.

Survivors can register online anytime day or night at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or with a smartphone or other Web-enabled device at m.fema.gov. Survivors can also register, check status of applications or receive other assistance at the FEMA Helpline, 800-621-3362, from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Eastern, seven days a week, until further notice. The TTY number is 800-462-7585. Multilingual operators are available during the same hours at the close of the English message.

Registering for disaster assistance with other agencies or organizations does not register survivors for FEMA disaster assistance. Having FEMA flood insurance does not register policyholders for disaster assistance, nor does it disqualify anyone from applying for assistance. Flood insurance claims are handled separately.

Hurricane Sandy Survivors May Now Use FEMA Rental Assistance for Security Deposits

TRENTON, N.J. — As recovery efforts continue in New Jersey through the holiday season, it is important that residents keep in touch with their elderly relatives, friends and neighbors, or anyone they may know with a disability or access and functional need.

Seniors or individuals with special needs previously living on their own may be dependent on others for food, shelter or the basic necessities of daily living. Those used to assisted living may face disruptions in their normal routines or a change in their usual caregivers.

Here are some simple ways to help:

  • Arrange weekly or bi-weekly visits.
  • Schedule a regular day when you can call to check in.
  • Assist them in recovering their physical possessions.
  • Help them return to familiar surroundings with friends and acquaintances as soon as possible.
  • Make sure they have needed medical and financial assistance.
  • Help them re-establish social networks.
  • Monitor their nutritional and medicinal needs.
  • If you do not live close, ask a neighbor of theirs to look in on them; make sure they have your up-to-date contact information.

Individuals with access or functional needs may include those who are non-English speakers or have limited English proficiency, those with special dietary needs or medical conditions, those who are deaf or hard of hearing and those who are visually or mobility impaired.

Keep In Touch With Seniors After Hurricane Sandy

New York – The Federal Emergency Management Agency understands that some Hurricane Sandy survivors may need additional temporary rental assistance to help them achieve their permanent housing goals.

All applicants who received temporary rental assistance from FEMA were mailed a “Declaration for Continuing Need for Rental Assistance” letter.

This form is mailed 15 days after applicants receive their initial rental assistance grant and explains how to request additional temporary rental assistance from FEMA.

To receive additional temporary rental assistance as quickly as possible, applicants must:

  • Complete the form with all the applicable information and mail it back to FEMA at the address printed on the form.
  • Applicants will need to provide information of both pre-disaster and current expenses that are applicable to their households such as pay-stubs to verify income.
  • They also must provide a copy of their lease and the name and phone number of their landlord.  
  • Applicants who don’t have the form should contact FEMA’s toll-free Help Line

800-621-FEMA (3362).

FEMA expects all families who receive temporary rental assistance to return to their damaged home when it is repaired or to locate and occupy affordable housing without FEMA rental assistance at their earliest opportunity. 

However, FEMA also recognizes this is a difficult time for Hurricane Sandy survivors and that some families need additional temporary assistance to assist them in their recovery.
