MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama Governor Robert Bentley requested and FEMA approved on Friday, June 27, to extend the deadline to apply for disaster assistance in the nine counties affected by the April 28 to May 5 severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding. The new deadline is Tuesday, July 15.

Counties approved for FEMA assistance through the Individuals and Households Program include Baldwin, Blount, DeKalb, Etowah, Jefferson, Lee, Limestone, Mobile and Tuscaloosa.

If you, a family member or a neighbor haven’t registered yet, this extension is for you. But don’t delay registration any longer. There are four ways to register:

  • Online at: www.disasterassistance.gov ;
  • Web-enabled phones at m.fema.gov;
  • Calling 800-621-3362 TTY 800-462-7585;
  • If using 711 Relay or Video Relay Services, call 800-621-3362. 

FEMA phone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time seven days a week; multilingual operators are available.

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s deadline to apply for disaster recovery loans also has been extended to July 15.

Homeowners, renters and businesses can apply for an SBA disaster loan at the centers, which are open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through July 15. The centers will be closed Friday, July 4. FEMA representatives are located at these centers to answer questions.

Federal Aid for Alabama Reaches $32 Million; Registration Extension Approved

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Nearly $19 million has been approved through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Individuals and Households Program. Another $1.3 million has been provided to state, county and local governments through FEMA’s Public Assistance Program. In addition, the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved more than $12 million through its low-interest disaster loan program.

In addition, Gov. Robert Bentley has requested and FEMA has approved a two-week extension to the registration period, which now extends to July 15.

The following numbers, compiled June 26, provide a snapshot of the Alabama/FEMA disaster recovery to date:

Funds approved

  • $15.4 million for Housing Assistance grants to help with recovery rental expenses and home repair costs.
  • $3.5 million for Other Needs Assistance to cover essential disaster-related needs, such as medical expenses and lost personal possessions.
  • $12.6 million approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration for low-interest loans to eligible homeowners, renters or business owners.
  • $1.3 million for Public Assistance programs including debris removal, storm response and infrastructure repair and replacement.

Survivor Recovery

  • 14,819 damaged homes and property have been inspected (99 percent of requests).
  • 4,592 visits have been made to the 11 Disaster Recovery Centers located in designated counties. (All centers have closed; five have transitioned to Disaster Loan Outreach Centers, operated by the SBA.)
  • 9 counties designated for Individual Assistance.
  • 21 counties designated for Public Assistance.

FEMA works with many volunteer agencies and the private sector to speed the recovery effort. Those affected by the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding need to register with FEMA for disaster assistance.

New Saturday Hours for Arkansas Disaster Recovery Centers

Little Rock, Ark. – Effective immediately, the State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) in Vilonia and Mayflower will have new Saturday hours.

The centers will be open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The centers will continue to be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday–Friday.

Disaster Recovery Center Now Open in Wayne County

PEARL, Miss. – A disaster recovery center is now open in Wayne County to assist Mississippi residents affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from April 28 to May 3.

The disaster recovery center will be open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until further notice and is located at:

Specialists from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration will be on hand to answer questions. Survivors will be able to:

  • Submit any additional documentation needed, such as occupancy or ownership verification documents and letters from insurance companies.
  • Find out the status of an application.
  • Obtain information about different types of state and federal assistance.
  • Get help from SBA specialists in completing low-interest disaster loan applications for homeowners, renters and business owners.
  • Receive referrals to the American Red Cross and other voluntary organizations to help with immediate disaster-related needs.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois tornado survivors have until 6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, to visit the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at the Festival of Lights Building on East Washington Street in East Peoria.  

After that date, survivors of the Nov. 17 Illinois tornadoes can still get help by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362). Survivors who use TTY can call 800-462-7585. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Survivors can also call the helpline to register with FEMA before the Jan. 27 registration deadline. Other ways to register include online at DisasterAssistance.gov or with a smartphone or tablet by downloading the FEMA app or going to m.FEMA.gov. Survivors must register before the deadline to be eligible for possible grants and SBA low-interest disaster loans for temporary rental assistance, home repair and rebuilding, replacement of lost personal items, and other disaster-related expenses. Disaster Recovery Center Opens in Cañon City

DENVER – Cañon City’s Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., MDT, seven days beginning Thursday, Oct. 31. This is the first DRC in Fremont County.

Colorado residents who suffered losses and damages as a result of the severe storms, flooding, landslides and mudslides can get face-to-face disaster information at this DRC:

Forget About FEMA?

CHICAGO, IL – You’ve cleaned up and started making the necessary repairs from last month’s storms and flooding. Now the bills are coming due.

Your insurance may cover some of those costs, but if you haven’t registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), you may be missing out on additional assistance you need to recover. Until you register for assistance, FEMA has no way of knowing who you are, where you are, or what you need.

  • Calling your insurance agent does not register you with FEMA.
  • Contacting county or municipal agencies does not register you with FEMA.
  • Receiving assistance from volunteer agencies does not register you with FEMA.

The only way to determine whether you’re eligible for federal disaster assistance is to register with FEMA by phone or online, or by visiting a Disaster Recovery Center. FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams are also registering applicants for assistance in neighborhoods throughout the declared disaster area.

Disaster Recovery Center Opens in Cook County

CHICAGO, IL – A federal/state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open at 9 a.m. Saturday,
May 18, in Forest View for residents of Cook County to meet face-to-face with disaster recovery specialists, officials said today.

Disaster recovery officials work closely with community leaders to find DRC locations that provide safe and easy access for people affected by the recent flooding. More centers will open as sites are identified and approved.

DRC services include help with applying for disaster assistance and finding out about other disaster programs available from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), state and local agencies, and voluntary organizations. Residents must apply with FEMA even if they already provided damage information to local officials, other agencies or organizations.

SBA low-interest disaster loans may be available for homeowners, renters, businesses and private non-profit organizations of all sizes to repair or replace real estate, contents and/or personal property damaged in the severe storms and flooding. SBA customer service representatives will be present to answer questions and accept completed loan applications. Information and assistance from SBA is also available at 800-659-2955, (TTY) 800-877-8339 or online at sba.gov/services/disasterassistance.

Individuals can register online at DisasterAssistance.gov or via web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov. Applicants may also call 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585.
