Livingston Parish Schools Clean Up and Reopen with Federal Help

BATON ROUGE, La. –Livingston Parish school campuses have reopened for students and teachers with the help of a $17.5 million FEMA grant.

The grant paid for work to eliminate health and safety hazards so thousands of Livingston Parish students could return to school. Damage from August’s floods forced parish schools to close for a month. Students returned to the following 11 refurbished Livingston Parish school campuses: Doyle Elementary, Holden School, Springfield Elementary, Denham Springs Junior High, Freshwater Elementary, Northside Elementary, Lewis Vincent Elementary, Seventh Ward Elementary, Walker Freshman High, Westside Junior High and Live Oak High.

The funding also assisted the following five campuses where more recovery work remains before they reopen: Denham Springs Elementary, Denham Springs Freshman High, Denham Springs High, Southside Elementary and Southside Junior High.

The $17.5 million came from FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) program. The program helps to repair or replace critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, public buildings and schools. PA also helps certain private nonprofit organizations.

FEMA typically reimburses 75 percent of eligible PA expenses. However, FEMA will reimburse applicants 90 percent of eligible PA expenses given the magnitude of the August floods.

Three Disaster Recovery Centers to close; help is still available

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) in White Sulphur Springs and Rainelle in Greenbrier County, and the Clendenin DRC in Kanawha County will close at      5 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016.

The two Greenbrier County DRCs are located at:

  • 1233 Kanawha Ave., Rainelle

The Kanawha County DRC is located:

  • Across the street from Dollar General,

    120 Maywood Ave., Clendenin

As a survivor of the June storms and floods, you can still get the help you need with just a phone

call. The deadline to register for disaster assistance from FEMA is Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016.

Many of the services that were available at the DRCs are still available on the FEMA helpline. The helpline operates from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. EDT, seven days a week, until further notice. By calling 800-621-3362 (voice, 711 or video relay services) or 800-462-7585 for TTY users, you can use the helpline to:

  • Register with FEMA.

  • Provide a change of address, telephone and bank account numbers and insurance information.

  • Receive information about FEMA home inspections.

  • Get other questions answered about federal disaster assistance.

  • Ask questions about a letter from FEMA.

  • Learn how to appeal a FEMA decision. All applicants may appeal.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Roane County is scheduled to close permanently July 28 at 6 p.m.  The center has been operating out of the Geary Elementary School in Left Hand, W. Va.

Survivors of the June 22-29 disaster can still find help just a phone call away. Many of the services available at the DRCs are also available on the Helpline run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Helpline operates from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, until further notice. Get Advice on Rebuilding Stronger and Safer This Week in Ashland and Holly Springs

OXFORD, Miss. – Home and business owners looking for information on how to rebuild safer and stronger following the destructive December storms will find help this week at local hardware stores in Ashland and Holly Springs.

Mitigation specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be at the Ashland Hardware store at 15800 Boundary Drive this Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will be in Holly Springs at the Booker Hardware store at 119 South Market St. this Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

The specialists will answer questions and offer advice on ways to repair or rebuild homes so they are more storm resistant. Free printed materials with additional information will also be available.

The FEMA specialists can also offer advice on dealing with contractors, in particular on how to avoid being scammed. The specialists will provide handouts on selecting and working with contractors.

Anyone interested is welcome whether or not they are receiving financial disaster assistance from FEMA.

Two Disaster Recovery Centers Transition to Disaster Loan Outreach Centers

DENVER – Colorado’s recovery from severe weather continues with changes at three Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC).

The DRCs in Colorado Springs and Golden will close at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26 and both will transition on Monday, Oct. 28 to Disaster Loan Outreach Centers (DLOC).

DLOCs are operated by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). At each DLOC, SBA representatives will answer questions, explain the application process and help survivors apply for low-interest disaster loans.

Due to reduced numbers of survivors needing disaster assistance, the DRC in Fort Collins will close at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26.

DRCs are operated by the Colorado Office of Emergency Management (COEM) and FEMA in partnership with the SBA, county and local governments.
