Take action with these simple steps to protect what matters before a flood threatens your community:

Your Home
• Ensure you’re insured. Consider purchasing flood insurance to protect your home against the damage floodwaters can cause. Homeowners’ insurance policies do not typically cover flood losses, and most policies take 30-days to become effective.  Visit FloodSmart.gov for more information.
• Keep important papers in a safe place. Make copies of critical documents (mortgage papers, deed, passport, bank information, etc.). Keep copies in your home and store originals in a secure place outside the home, such as a bank safe deposit box.
• Elevate mechanicals off the floor of your basement—such as the water heater, washer, dryer and furnace—to avoid potential water damage.
• Caulk exterior openings where electrical wires and cables enter your home to keep water from getting inside.
• Shovel! As temperatures warm, snow melt is a real concern. Shovel snow away from your home and clean your gutters to keep your home free from potential water damage.

Your Family
• Build and maintain an emergency supply kit. Include drinking water, a first-aid kit, canned food, a radio, flashlight and blankets. • Plan for your pet needs. Ensure you have pet food, bottled water, medications, cat litter/pan, newspaper, a secure pet carrier and leash included in your emergency supply kit.
• Have a family emergency plan in place. Plan and practice flood evacuation routes from home, work and school that are on higher ground. Your family may not be together when a disaster strikes so it is important to plan in advance: how you will get to a safe place; how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations.

“Spring Ahead” And Be Flood Ready

EATONTOWN, N.J. — In the two years and three months since Hurricane Sandy scored a direct hit on New Jersey, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has remained engaged in the recovery effort, providing $6.9 billion to date to help the state recover and rebuild.

This money has helped to rebuild critical facilities, clear debris from navigable channels, restore boardwalks along the Jersey Shore, rebuild Atlantic Highlands harbor, and reimburse municipalities throughout the state for the enormous costs of clearing debris and restoring public safety in the immediate aftermath of the storm.

FEMA’s National Flood Insurance program has paid out more than $3.5 billion in claims to flood insurance policyholders whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the storm.

Through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program (IHP), the agency approved $422.9 million in payments to Sandy survivors.

FEMA Public Assistance, which provides funds for repair and rebuilding of infrastructure and public facilities as well as necessary work such as debris removal and emergency response, has contributed $1.525 billion towards repair and rebuilding projects in New Jersey.  Eighty-seven percent of all PA projects in New Jersey have total project costs of over a half-million dollars.

As the immediate work of rebuilding continues, FEMA is helping to strengthen the state’s capacity to withstand a future disaster. Forty percent of all Public Assistance (PA) projects have accompanying mitigation projects attached to them. FEMA is funding projects that protect vulnerable facilities from inundation by storm waters, raise homes above the flood plain and convert neighborhoods that have experienced repeated and devastating flooding to public, open space.

To date, the FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program has allotted $162 million for voluntary property acquisitions in communities subject to repetitive flooding. It has allocated $51 million for home elevations in flood-prone areas and $9.7 million for the Retail Fuel Station Program. The RFS is a voluntary grant program designed to enhance the operational resiliency of retail fuel stations statewide by funding the installation of back-up generators capable of operating fuel pumps when power outages occur.

FEMA Funding in New Jersey Exceeds $6.9 Billion

WASHINGTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced it is seeking applicants for its Youth Preparedness Council. The Council supports FEMA’s commitment to involving youth in preparedness-related activities and provides an opportunity for young people to offer their perspectives, feedback and insights on how to help make America more resilient. 

“Young people play a key role in advancing emergency preparedness and informing our efforts,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. “The Youth Preparedness Council offers FEMA the unique opportunity to benefit from the perspectives of young people, while also empowering them to engage with their communities to increase readiness.”

FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council was formed in 2012 to bring together youth leaders from across the country who are interested and engaged in advocating youth preparedness. Council members are selected based on their dedication to public service, their efforts in making a difference in their communities, and their potential to expand their impact as national advocates for youth preparedness.

As advocates for preparedness, Council members will complete a self-selected youth preparedness project and have the opportunity to share their opinions, ideas, solutions and questions about youth disaster preparedness with FEMA leadership and national organizations working on preparedness initiatives. Members also have the opportunity to brief FEMA officials on strategies, initiatives and projects throughout their one-year term.

To apply, Youth Preparedness Council applicants must be 13 to 17 years old. They must also be engaged in individual and community preparedness or have experienced a disaster that motivated them to make a positive difference in their community. Individuals who applied for 2014 are encouraged to apply again. Current Council members have an option to extend for an additional year, upon FEMA request. Adults working with youth or on community preparedness are encouraged to share the application with young people who might be interested in applying for the Youth Preparedness Council.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must submit a completed application form (link to be provided once available) and two letters of recommendation. Completed applications and all supporting materials must be received no later than March 2, 2015, 11:59 p.m. EST. New Youth Preparedness Council members will be announced in May 2015.

Following is a summary of key federal disaster aid programs that can be made available as needed and warranted under President Obama’s major disaster declaration issued for Mississippi.

Assistance for the State and Affected Local Governments Can Include as Required:

  • Payment of not less than 75 percent of the eligible costs for repairing or replacing damaged public facilities, such as roads, bridges, utilities, buildings, schools, recreational areas and similar publicly owned property, as well as certain private non-profit organizations engaged in community service activities. Officials with FEMA and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) urge anyone who still needs help to register before the deadline – Dec. 29, 2014.

After serving more than 2,700 homeowners, renters and business owners who had damages from the South Napa Earthquake, FEMA’s presence at the Napa Earthquake Local Assistance Center at 301 1st St. in Napa will conclude at 6 p.m. on Mon., Dec. 29. But help is still available in person, online and over the phone.

Until then, the Local Assistance Center will operate on its existing schedule: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday. In observance of Christmas, however, the center will also be closed Dec. 24-26.

Disaster assistance includes grants for homeowners and renters to help pay for rent, essential home repairs and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other sources.

Two Weeks Left to Apply for South Napa Earthquake Disaster Assistance

WARREN, Mich. – Sunday is the final day to register for FEMA disaster assistance for Michigan residents affected by the August floods.

As the registration and application deadline nears more than 125,000 residents in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties have registered for assistance and more than $240 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved.

FEMA has approved nearly $139 million in grants, while the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved more than $101 million in low-interest loans.

Eligible residents who register and receive an SBA low-interest disaster loan application should return the application by the Dec. 15 deadline. SBA applicants are not obligated to accept a loan; however, completing it may lead to additional FEMA assistance. Survivors are encouraged to consider all sources of aid.

Survivors who have delayed registration for any reason should apply for potential assistance that could include:

  • Housing Assistance offers temporary rental assistance and home repair grants to eligible survivors. FEMA’s ultimate goal is to ensure survivors’ dwellings are safe, sanitary and functional.
  • Other Needs Assistance is available for disaster related costs associated with personal property, transportation, moving and storage, or other necessary expenses.

FEMA disaster grants may be available for cleaning and testing a flood-damaged furnace for repairs or for replacement if the furnace is destroyed. With winter fast approaching Michiganders should make sure their home-heating systems are in good working order.

FEMA Flood Help Ending: Register by Sunday

WARREN, MI – The State of Michigan and FEMA report that the registration deadline for Michigan residents affected by last August’s severe storms and flooding is approaching.

November 24th is the last day that homeowners, renters and businesses can apply for federal disaster assistance.  To date, more than 111,000 residents have registered with FEMA online at disasterassistance.gov or have called 800-621-3362. Hundreds more are registering every day.

“The clock is ticking, and FEMA wants to reach each and every homeowner and renter who sustained property damage or losses from the August flooding disaster,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Dolph Diemont.  “We urge them to register for assistance right away.”    

More than $170 million in federal assistance has been paid to eligible applicants and is jump-starting the recovery efforts of individual survivors, their families and communities in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties, the three counties designated as disaster areas. 

“Michigan residents are making progress in their recovery from the storms,” said Gov. Rick Snyder.  “The efforts of residents, combined with those of government, businesses and nonprofit agencies, have made all the difference in Southeast Michigan.” 

More than $61 million in state and federal assistance was in the hands of 65,000 residents within two weeks after the disaster declaration was announced, FEMA reports.  Those totals increased to $98 million and more than 100,000 residents benefiting from the FEMA grants and Small Business Administration low interest loans after another two weeks.  

In addition to these millions in funding assistance to individuals, families, businesses and communities, federal programs are helping survivors with temporary housing, assisting eligible parents with childcare services, and helping connect survivors to other agencies’ assistance programs to ensure they get the help they need. 

FEMA’s Recovery Support Sites and Disaster Recovery Centers throughout the three-county area continue to offer registration services and opportunities for one-on-one information sharing.  More than 20,000 residents have taken advantage of these face-to-face interactions between applicants and FEMA’s disaster survivor assistance teams.

SANTA FE – Getting information about ongoing disaster recovery operations in New Mexico is as simple as following state and federal emergency management agencies on Twitter and/or visiting their websites.

The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (NM DHSEM) provides response, recovery, mitigation and preparedness information online at www.nmdhsem.org/. DHSEM is the state’s homeland security and emergency management agency. The agency works to identify and lessen the impacts of emergencies, disasters and threats to New Mexico by developing effective prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery actions for all disasters and emergencies.

1.        You will need a Twitter account. If you don’t have one yet, follow the instructions on Twitter.com to create one.

2.        Once you have your Twitter account, sign in and in the search box, type in “NMDHSEM” or “femaregion6.”

3.        At DHSEM or femaregion6, click on the “Follow” box.

4.        Receive daily tweets and re-tweet to your followers when you can.

Disaster Recovery Partners in New Mexico use Social Media & Websites to Share Information

WARREN, Mich. – Individuals who sustained damage from the August storms and flooding can call the Disaster Legal Services hotline at 844-451-0749 for free legal assistance and counseling.

Through the hotline, volunteer lawyers can help eligible survivors with legal issues related to the disaster. Volunteer lawyers can discuss insurance claims, landlord-tenant issues, consumer protection issues and the replacement of wills or other important documents that were lost or destroyed during the storm.

To be eligible for this free legal assistance, applicants must reside in one of the three counties designated for Individual Assistance under the federal disaster declaration for the August storms. The counties are Macomb, Oakland and Wayne.

Disaster Legal Services is a federally funded program run under an agreement between the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Individuals also can register for disaster assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or via smart phone, tablet or web-enabled device at m.fema.gov. Applicants may also call 800-621-3362 or (TTY) users call 800-462-7585. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. EDT seven days a week until further notice.
