Mississippians Have One Week to Register for Disaster Assistance

CLINTON, Miss. – In nearly seven weeks since Hurricane Isaac struck Mississippi, $21.9 million in state and federal aid has been approved to help those affected.                                                                                            

MEMA and FEMA provide the following snapshot of the disaster recovery effort as of Oct. 22:

  • More than 6,200 households have received FEMA grants that assist with housing and personal property loss.
  • Nearly $12.6 million has been approved for housing grants, including short-term rental assistance, home repair and replacement costs.
  • More than $2.3 million has been approved to cover other essential disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses and lost personal possessions.
  • Nearly $7 million in low-interest disaster loans have been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration to assist homeowners, renters and businesses.
  • Nearly 20,000 home inspections have been completed.

Survivors have just over a week to register for disaster assistance. Registration ends Oct. 31. Survivors should register online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by mobile device at m.fema.gov. If online or mobile access is unavailable, applicants should call the FEMA toll-free Helpline at 800-621-3362. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services should call 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

More than 25,000 survivors in designated counties have contacted FEMA for help or information regarding disaster assistance. Many people sought housing assistance from FEMA because their primary homes were unlivable or inaccessible.

Those who have already registered for disaster assistance should stay in contact with FEMA if they change their mailing address, phone number or e-mail address, if they receive an insurance settlement, or discover additional damage by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.

The Helpline is also available for Mississippians who have needs not met by federal assistance. FEMA specialists are available this week to answer recovery questions at locations in Copiah, Jefferson, Jones and Lamar counties. The disaster recovery centers in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson and Pearl River counties will close permanently at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12.

Things You Should Know About Recovering From Hurricane Isaac

Clinton, Miss. Disaster recovery officials are concerned that many homeowners and renters with Hurricane Isaac losses could miss out on valuable grants and low-interest loans by not returning completed applications to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

“This is a win-win situation for everybody who received a disaster loan application from the SBA, even if they’re leaning away from a loan,” said Mississippi Emergency Management Director Robert Latham. “If the SBA is not able to approve your home loan application, you could be referred back to FEMA for a possible grant. And if you qualify for a loan, there is no obligation to take it.” 

Many disaster survivors receive loan applications from the SBA after registering with FEMA for help. Loan applications are also available from disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/. Property damage loan applications must be returned to the SBA no later than Oct. 31, 2012.

Business owners, although not eligible for grants, can apply for low-interest SBA disaster loans to cover uninsured losses to business assets such as real estate, machinery, equipment, inventory and more. 

Small businesses can also qualify for economic injury disaster loans. These working capital loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred.

Less Than One Month To Ask For FEMA Help

BATON ROUGE, La. – Small businesses in Louisiana impacted by Hurricane Isaac now have another way to get help with their recovery efforts.

The Big Business–Small Business Emergency Management Mentorship Program is available to pair up small-business owners with big-business mentors who will help them bounce back after the storm by providing guidance such as ways to rebuild and strengthen their facilities.

The program was created by the National Incident Management Systems and Advanced Technologies Institute at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the International Association of Emergency Managers.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Louisiana Business Emergency Operations Center (LABEOC) and other organizations are supporting the effort by spreading the word in affected communities and parishes.

“This is a great, free resource for business owners who sustained damage during Isaac,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Hall of FEMA. “We are proud to be part of the whole community team that is working to support people in Louisiana as they work to rebound from the storm.” 

The Big Business–Small Business Emergency Management Mentorship Program can also assist business owners in preparedness efforts, including developing an emergency plan of action, improving resiliency and developing the tools to recover from disasters.

Big Businesses Helping Small Businesses After Hurricane Isaac

Disaster survivors who don’t understand FEMA correspondence or disagree with FEMA decisions can call the Helpline or visit a disaster recovery center for assistance

CLINTON, Miss. – Everyone who registers with FEMA receives a letter telling them the status of their application. Survivors who don’t understand the letter or disagree with FEMA’s decision should visit a Disaster Recovery Center or call the FEMA Helpline to get more information and assistance with questions.

The most common reason for denial of housing assistance and other aid is that an applicant has not submitted proof of an insurance settlement. Some other reasons for an initial turndown can be that applicants:

  • Have not provided FEMA all the information needed.
  • Did not provide proof of ownership or residence.
  • Have not provided records that showed the damaged property was their primary residence at the time of the disaster.
  • Have not signed essential documents.

FEMA cannot duplicate assistance from insurance benefits or other government sources. However, FEMA aid may be approved if all eligible damage is not covered by private insurance or other government assistance.

Disaster survivors have a right to ask FEMA to reconsider a decision on their eligibility for assistance, but such appeals must be filed in writing within 60 days of the date of the determination letter. Applicants who have questions can call the helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 or visit a disaster recovery center.

Disaster assistance for qualified homeowners and renters may include grants to help pay for temporary housing, emergency home repairs or serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance.
