TRENTON, N.J. — The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved over $42.3 million in disaster assistance loans for 653 New Jersey residents and businesses affected by Hurricane Sandy. The deadline to apply for physical damage is December 31, 2012. Those affected by the disaster are encouraged to apply now and may apply for disaster loans electronically from SBA’s website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.

Applicants do not have to wait for insurance to be settled before applying. No one is obligated to take a loan if it is offered, but if you don’t accept a loan, you may not be eligible for FEMA’s Other Needs Assistance. However, it is important for businesses and residents to maximize their recovery resources and take time to submit their SBA disaster applications before the December 31 deadline. 

SBA offers the following types of low-interest, long-term loans to cover uninsured losses:

Home Disaster Loans: to homeowners to repair disaster-damaged real estate and replace damaged contents. Renters are also eligible for their contents loss.

Business Physical Disaster Loans: to businesses to repair disaster-damaged property and repair/replace damaged business contents including inventory, machinery and equipment. Businesses of any size are eligible. Private, non-profit organizations such as charities, churches, etc., are also eligible.

Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs): to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, non-profit organizations of all sizes meet their ordinary financial obligations that cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster.

Interest rates are as low as 1.688 percent for homeowners and renters, 3 percent for non-profit organizations and 4 percent for businesses with terms up to 30 years. 

The filing deadline to return applications for physical damage is December 31, 2012. The deadline to return economic injury applications is July 31, 2013.

SBA customer service representatives are available at all Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) throughout the state and at the ten Business Recovery Centers (BRCs) in Atlantic City, Hackensack, Cape May, Newark, Jersey City, Piscataway, Lincroft, Manahawkin, Paterson and Plainfield.

SBA’s partners including counselors with the New Jersey Small Business Development Center (NJSBDC), SCORE, SBA Women’s Business Center and SBA’s Veteran’s Business Outreach Center are available to help business owners prepare needed financial information at no charge.

Over $42 Million In Disaster Loans Approved In New Jersey, SBA Urges Submission Of Applications Before December 31 Deadline

WINDSOR, Conn. — Renters in Connecticut counties whose homes and property were damaged by Hurricane Sandy may be eligible for federal disaster assistance.

“Sandy did not discriminate between homeowners and renters,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Albert Lewis. “We’re here to help everyone who is eligible for assistance, and that definitely includes renters.”

Renters who were displaced from their homes by the storm may be eligible for a FEMA grant to help them pay rent for temporary housing. These rental grants are for a 30-day period, subject to assistance review, until renters’ previous homes are again habitable or they find another home.

There is a free referral service to help applicants find safe, replacement rental property.

Both renters and homeowners may also be eligible for Other Needs Assistance, designed to help survivors with uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs caused by the disaster.

Grants can be used for:

  • Disaster-related medical and dental expenses;

Federal Disaster Assistance Is for Connecticut Renters, Too

WINDSOR, Conn. – An outreach team from FEMA will be at the Home Depot store in Fairfield this weekend to explain techniques that may reduce potential damage to homes, businesses and property from future flooding.

Mitigation specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will offer “how-to” information for retrofitting buildings and elevating utilities. Specialists can also provide clean-up tips to help prevent mold and mildew from forming in a storm-damaged home.

The FEMA team will be at the Home Depot store, 541 Kings Highway Cutoff, Fairfield, CT 06824, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, and Sunday, Nov. 25.

Information will include instructions on how to:

  • Relocate circuit breaker panels, outlets and switches above potential floodwaters
  • Move washer and dryer hookups to a higher floor
  • Elevate furnaces and water heaters
  • Prevent sewer backups with a backflow valve

After Sandy, Learn Rebuilding Techniques at Home Depot This Weekend

WINDSOR, Conn. – Hurricane survivors who receive a loan application from the U.S. Small Business Administration after registering for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency need to complete and return it. The application deadline is Dec. 31, 2012.

While SBA’s low-interest disaster loans represent the major source of federal funding for recovery, the application itself may open the door to other FEMA grant programs. People who do not qualify for a loan may be eligible for grants to replace essential household items, replace or repair a damaged vehicle, or cover storage expenses.

“In a disaster, SBA helps individuals as well as businesses,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Albert Lewis. “No one is obligated to accept an SBA loan. If you receive a loan application, it’s important to fill it out and return it. If you don’t submit the loan application, the assistance process may stop prematurely.”

Registering with FEMA often prompts SBA to send an application for a low-interest disaster loan. The application takes little time to complete.

FEMA grants are designed to jump-start the recovery process and may not cover all damage or property loss. SBA low-interest disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to eligible homeowners to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters may apply for loans up to $40,000 for personal property. Loan amounts cannot exceed uninsured losses.

Businesses and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets.

Recovery officials note several reasons for completing the application. For instance:

  • An insurance settlement may fall short. A survivor may be underinsured for the amount of work needed to repair or replace a structure. An SBA low-interest disaster loan can cover the cost. Survivors are encouraged not to miss the filing deadline by waiting for an insurance settlement. A settlement can be used toward the loan.
  • SBA can offer a loan that fits an applicant’s budget. SBA specialists can help with an affordable low-interest loan. In some cases, SBA can refinance all or part of an existing mortgage.
  • SBA can help renters replace household contents and vehicles. Renters and homeowners may borrow up to $40,000 to repair or replace clothing, furniture, cars or appliances damaged or destroyed in the hurricane.

FEMA Inspectors Help Start Connecticut Recovery from Sandy

WINDSOR, Conn. –One of the most important signs of progress is the arrival of an official damage inspector from the Federal Emergency Management Agency at a damaged property.

The arrival of an inspector from FEMA means the damage to a home will be identified and recorded.   Identifying damage is an important step in determining both the amount and the types of assistance FEMA may provide.

If you live in one of the counties designated for disaster assistance and have registered with FEMA, you may be eligible for grants to help pay for rental housing, essential home repairs and other disaster-related expenses.

All residents of Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven and New London counties, and the Mashantucket Pequot and the Mohegan Tribal Nations located within New London County may be eligible for federal disaster assistance from the FEMA Individual Assistance grant program.

The gateway to all this aid is registration for assistance with FEMA.

Following your registration for assistance, should you qualify for an inspection; a FEMA inspector will call to set up a time to see your property.   It is important to meet the inspector to avoid delays in the inspection process.

If you can’t be present for the scheduled appointment, you can appoint someone 18 or older who lived in the house prior to the disaster to stand in for you during the inspection.

When the inspector arrives, be prepared to provide written proof of home ownership, such as a tax receipt, mortgage payment book or home insurance policy showing the property’s address.  If proof of ownership is not available, the inspector will complete the inspection, but proof of ownership must be provided to FEMA.   If the inspector is to document damage for a renter, proof of residence, such as a copy of the lease or a utility bill, is required.

The U.S. Small Business Administration and private insurance companies may also have inspectors working in your area, but the FEMA inspector will wear an official FEMA badge and will have the registration number your case was assigned when you registered for assistance.   FEMA does not charge a fee for an inspection.

CLINTON, Miss. – In the more than two months since Hurricane Isaac struck Mississippi, $28 million in state and federal aid has been approved to help those affected.                                                                            

MEMA and FEMA provide the following snapshot of the disaster recovery effort as of Nov. 5:

  • More than 6,400 households have received FEMA grants that assist with housing and personal property loss.
  • More than $13 million has been approved for housing grants, including short-term rental assistance, home repair and replacement costs.
  • More than $2.4 million has been approved to cover other essential disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses and lost personal possessions.
  • Nearly $7.5 million in low-interest disaster loans has been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration to assist homeowners, renters and businesses.
  • Nearly 20,500 home inspections have been completed.

Those who received money from FEMA must keep the receipts or bills for which the money was used. The records document that the assistance was used to meet disaster-related needs and must be saved for three years. For more on what should be kept, consult the “Help After a Disaster” guide, which was mailed to each applicant. Information is also available online at fema.gov/help-after-disaster.

The Helpline also is available for Mississippians who have needs not met by federal assistance. It is a good source of information referring survivors to state and local organizations and partner agencies such as the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Some 26,000 Mississippians have already registered with FEMA, but those who have not must do so by midnight Wednesday, Oct. 31.

There are two ways to complete the registration process:
