NEW YORK — Federal disaster assistance to New York survivors of Hurricane Sandy totals almost $1.5 billion.

FEMA continues to reach out to all 13 counties designated for Individual Assistance, focusing on the hardest-hit areas. Assistance to residents in affected counties includes:

  • Bronx                $2.3 million
  • Kings                $188 million
  • Nassau              $277 million
  • New York         $12.8 million
  • Queens              $218 million
  • Richmond         $87.9 million
  • Suffolk              $63.9 million

FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration have approved almost $1.5 billion for Hurricane Sandy survivors. FEMA has approved more than $855 million for individuals and households, including nearly $753 million for housing assistance and more than $102 million in assistance for other needs.

  • SBA has approved more than $590 million in disaster loans to homeowners and renters and nearly $40 million in disaster loans to businesses. The SBA has staff members at every FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Center and 17 Business Recovery Centers in the New York area to provide one-on-one help to business owners seeking disaster assistance.
  • More than 263,000 New Yorkers have contacted FEMA for information or registered for assistance, including nearly 143,000 who have applied through the online application site at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or on their smartphone at m.fema.gov.
  • 20 Disaster Recovery Centers are open in the affected areas. These include mobile sites as well as fixed sites. To date, nearly 133,000 survivors have been assisted at Disaster Recovery Centers in New York.         
  • 59 inspectors are currently in the field. To date, 172,727 home inspections have been completed, making a 99.4 percent completion rate.
  • 13 New York counties are designated for both Individual Assistance and Public Assistance. These are Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester. Greene County has been designated for Public Assistance only.
  • More than $1.4 billion has been paid to National Flood Insurance Program policy holders in New York for losses resulting from Sandy. The National Flood Insurance Program, administered by FEMA, offers flood insurance to all homeowners, renters and business owners if their community participates in the NFIP.
  • Since Hurricane Sandy made landfall, FEMA has provided more than $413 million in Public Assistance grants in New York State. The FEMA PA program reimburses state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations 75 percent of costs for disaster-related expenses associated with emergency protective measures, debris removal, and the repair and restoration of damaged infrastructure. In order to qualify, damage must be a direct result of Hurricane Sandy.

FEMA Estende Programa de Assistência de Acomodação Temporária em NY por mais 14 dias

Nova York – A Agência Federal de Gerenciamento de Emergências, a pedido do estado de Nova York, aprovou a extensão uma extensão de 14 dias para o programa de Assistência de Acomodação Temporária, que permite que os sobreviventes elegíveis do furacão Sandy que não podem voltar para suas residências permaneçam utilizando hotéis ou motéis.

A nova extensão permitirá que os cadastrados permaneçam em hotéis participantes até 27 de janeiro de 2013. A FEMA chamará os candidatos elegíveis para a extensão para notificá-los de que a data de saída foi estendida para 27 de janeiro.   

“O programa de Assistência de Acomodação Temporária é uma solução temporária para pessoas que precisam de um lugar para ficar enquanto continuamos trabalhando com nossos parceiros estaduais e locais para ajudar a levar as pessoas de volta à habitação de longo prazo”, disse o Diretor Federal de Coordenação da FEMA Michael F. Byrne. “Essa é a nossa prioridade número um”.

“Em nome do governador Cuomo, agradeço à FEMA pela aprovação de pedido do Estado solicitando estender o programa de Assistência de Acomodação Temporária”, disse Jerome M. Hauer, Comissário da Divisão de Segurança Interna e Serviços de Emergência de NYS. “A extensão deste importante programa fornece a assistência necessária para os afetados pelo furacão Sandy enquanto continuam recuperando e reconstruindo”.

FEMA Extends Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program in NY for an Additional 14 Days

New York – The Federal Emergency Management Agency, at the request of the State of New York, has approved a 14-day extension to the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program, which allows eligible survivors from Hurricane Sandy who cannot return to their homes to stay in participating hotels or motels.

The new extension will allow applicants to remain in participating hotels until Jan. 27, 2013. FEMA will call applicants eligible for the extension to notify them of the extended Jan. 27 checkout date.   

“The Transitional Sheltering Assistance program is a temporary solution for folks who need a place to stay as we continue working with our state and local partners to help get people back into longer-term housing,” said FEMA’s Federal Coordinating Officer Michael F. Byrne. “That’s our number one priority.”

“On behalf of Governor Cuomo, I thank FEMA for approving the State’s request to extend the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program,” said Jerome M. Hauer, Commissioner of the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.  “The extension of this important program provides necessary assistance to those affected by Hurricane Sandy as they continue to recover and rebuild.”

This is a short-term program that places families in hotels while they transition into longer-term housing.

To be eligible for TSA, survivors must first apply for federal assistance through FEMA by:

  • Registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov; 
  • Registering via smartphone or tablet by using the FEMA app or going to m.fema.gov; or
  • Registering by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) (TTY 800-462-7585). For 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 800-621-3362.

NEW YORK – Hurricane Sandy survivors in New York have a limited time to visit four Disaster Recovery Centers.

The State of New York and the Federal Emergency Management Agency closely monitor visitor traffic at all New York Disaster Recovery Centers. Traffic at these four centers has slowed, indicating the information needs of survivors in those areas have mostly been met. So far, nearly 5,500 survivors have visited the four centers combined.

Following is a list of the four centers, their respective operating hours, and the last day and time survivors will be able to receive assistance at these locations:

President Declares Disaster for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to Pennsylvania to supplement the commonwealth and local recovery efforts in the area affected by Hurricane Sandy during the period of Oct. 26 to Nov. 8, 2012.

The President’s action makes federal funding available to the commonwealth and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Hurricane Sandy in Bedford, Bucks, Cameron, Dauphin, Forest, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Potter, Somerset, Sullivan, and Wyoming counties. 

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Thomas J. McCool has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.  McCool said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the commonwealth and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

More than two months after Hurricane Sandy struck, 22 recovery centers, including the one in Rockaway Park, are open throughout New York. In total, recovery centers have hosted more than 122,000 survivors.

NEW YORK – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has developed a checklist to help Hurricane Sandy survivors rebuild smarter, stronger and safer so their homes are protected in future storms.

“We want survivors to plan for the future, to ensure their homes and communities are stronger when the next storm hits,” said Michael F. Byrne, FEMA’s federal coordinating officer.

The checklist can be downloaded at www.fema.gov/SandyNY.

Here are some of the key points on the checklist:

  • Know your risk. Review local flood maps to understand the property’s flood risk.
  • Develop a plan to protect the property and reduce the impact of flooding. 
  • Finalize the plan. Contact local building officials before rebuilding, renovating or retrofitting. Make sure plans meet local and state government requirements.
  • Get insurance. The National Flood Insurance Program helps cover costly losses associated with flooding. Visit www.floodsmart.gov.

SBA loan application is important part of the process

NEW YORK – In about half an hour, New York survivors of Hurricane Sandy can make a big difference in their recovery by applying for a low-interest disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The process isn’t hard at all. By returning the SBA loan application, homeowners may be eligible for up to $200,000 to repair or replace their storm-damaged home. Homeowners and renters may be eligible for up to $40,000 for replacement of personal property.

The form asks for the survivor’s name, contact information, Social Security number, mailing address, address of damaged property, income and assets, monthly housing cost, insurance information, debts and credit references. The language is clear and the application is not long.

  • SBA customer service representatives are available to issue or accept low-interest disaster loan applications and answer questions at all New York State/FEMA Disaster Recovery centers and SBA Business Recovery Centers.
    • To find the nearest Disaster Recovery Center, go online to www.FEMA.gov/disaster-recovery-centers or, with a tablet or smartphone, go to m.fema.gov. Survivors may also text “DRC” and their Zip code to 43362 (4FEMA).
    • To locate the nearest Business Recovery Center, visit www.sba.gov or call      800-659-2955 (TTY 800-877-8339.)      
  • Applicants may also apply online using the Electronic Loan Application via SBA’s secure website at https://DisasterLoan.SBA.gov/ELA. More information is available by calling the SBA Disaster Customer Service Center toll-free number, 800-659-2955    (TTY 800-877-8339). Assistance is also available by email to DisasterCustomerService@sba.gov or by visiting www.sba.gov.

If SBA finds the applicant eligible for a loan, there is no obligation to accept it. But filling out the application, whether or not a loan is offered, opens the door to other possible assistance, including additional federal grant funds for homeowners and renters.

So it’s worth spending a few minutes to ensure that the widest possible array of benefits is available.

The deadline for returning an SBA disaster loan application is Jan. 28.
