OKLAHOMA CITY – To date, Oklahomans have received more than $40.7 million in grants, low-interest loans and insurance settlements from the federal government, helping to rebuild the lives of families and help out businesses affected by the severe weather and subsequent flooding during the period of May 5 through June 22.

Nearly 10,000 families have registered for assistance with the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The disaster assistance, which totals more than $40.7 million, includes more than $15.5 million approved for homeowners and renters, more than $13.2 million in grants for housing, including home repairs and rental assistance, and more than $2.1 million for Other Needs, such as repair or replacement of personal property essential to the home. It also includes more than $8.6 million in payments to survivors through the National Flood Insurance Program and more than $16.7 million in SBA loans.

SBA has issued 1,342 applications for low-interest disaster loans to homeowners and businesses. More than $15.5 million has been approved for homeowners, and more than $1.2 million in loans has been approved for business owners rebuilding after the storms.

Low-interest SBA disaster loans may be available to businesses of all sizes as well as certain private nonprofit organizations. Homeowners and renters are also eligible for SBA loans for uninsured loss. These loans cannot duplicate benefits from other agencies or compensation from other organizations.

FEMA deployed 88 Disaster Survivor Assistance specialists going door to door in the affected 45 counties. To date, they have visited 18,878 homes and 889 community-based organizations delivering recovery information and guidance. These specialists have also registered 647 survivors for disaster assistance. A total of 4,206 people have visited DRCs.

State/FEMA Recovery Center Opens in Okmulgee County

OKLAHOMA CITY The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are ready to assist everyone, including seniors, persons with disabilities and others with an access and functional need before, during and after a disaster.

Oklahoma seniors and those with disabilities are eligible to receive the same services and assistance offered to anyone in the declared disaster areas. However, the means to register for and receive assistance may be different for someone with a disability. That person may require accommodations such as a sign language interpreter or information in alternate formats.

Anyone who experienced losses or damages as a result of Oklahoma’s severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding and tornadoes of May 5 through June 4 has several ways to register for disaster assistance.

  • A FEMA grant does not add to an applicant’s taxable income.

What are the available accommodations?

  • For those who are deaf or hard of hearing, DRCs offer several communication methods, from captioned phones to iPads with video remote interpreting access to sign language interpreters. On-site interpreters are also available upon request.
  • For persons who are blind or have low vision, documents are available in large print and Braille.
  • For persons who use a mobility device, DRCs have accessible parking, ramps and accessible restrooms.

Disaster Assistance for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities

AUSTIN, Texas. Texans affected by the May 4 through June 19 severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding can call the FEMA Helpline to have their questions answered or check the status of their claims seven days a week, including the July 4 holiday weekend.

Kentucky Storm Survivors Urged to Stay in Touch with FEMA

WARREN, MI – The State of Michigan and FEMA report that the registration deadline for Michigan residents affected by last August’s severe storms and flooding is approaching.

November 24th is the last day that homeowners, renters and businesses can apply for federal disaster assistance.  To date, more than 111,000 residents have registered with FEMA online at disasterassistance.gov or have called 800-621-3362. Hundreds more are registering every day.

“The clock is ticking, and FEMA wants to reach each and every homeowner and renter who sustained property damage or losses from the August flooding disaster,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Dolph Diemont.  “We urge them to register for assistance right away.”    

More than $170 million in federal assistance has been paid to eligible applicants and is jump-starting the recovery efforts of individual survivors, their families and communities in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties, the three counties designated as disaster areas. 

“Michigan residents are making progress in their recovery from the storms,” said Gov. Rick Snyder.  “The efforts of residents, combined with those of government, businesses and nonprofit agencies, have made all the difference in Southeast Michigan.” 

More than $61 million in state and federal assistance was in the hands of 65,000 residents within two weeks after the disaster declaration was announced, FEMA reports.  Those totals increased to $98 million and more than 100,000 residents benefiting from the FEMA grants and Small Business Administration low interest loans after another two weeks.  

In addition to these millions in funding assistance to individuals, families, businesses and communities, federal programs are helping survivors with temporary housing, assisting eligible parents with childcare services, and helping connect survivors to other agencies’ assistance programs to ensure they get the help they need. 

FEMA’s Recovery Support Sites and Disaster Recovery Centers throughout the three-county area continue to offer registration services and opportunities for one-on-one information sharing.  More than 20,000 residents have taken advantage of these face-to-face interactions between applicants and FEMA’s disaster survivor assistance teams.

FEMA Registration Deadline Nears

Warren, Mich. – Southeast Michigan homeowners and renters who lost personal property as a result of the August severe storms and flooding may be eligible for disaster-related assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other agencies.

Renters who suffered damage to their apartment or leased/rented house are encouraged to contact FEMA.  

“August flooding didn’t discriminate between homeowners and renters,” said Michigan State Police Capt. Chris A. Kelenske, State Coordinating Officer and Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. “Thanks to rental-support programs, Michiganders who sustained flood damage could be eligible for assistance.”

Through Housing Assistance, FEMA offers two types of help to eligible renters:

  • Money to rent a different place to live for a limited period while repairs are done to the damaged home or apartment
  • A free referral service to find a safe replacement rental property

“As Michigan renters are discovering, disaster aid is not limited to homeowners,” said Dolph A. Diemont, federal coordinating officer. “Thousands of renters have registered with FEMA and are currently receiving rental assistance as they rebuild their lives.”

Both renters and homeowners may also be eligible for Other Needs Assistance (ONA), designed to help disaster survivors with uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs caused by the disaster. ONA grants can be used for:

  • Disaster-related medical and dental expenses
  • Disaster-related funeral and burial expenses
  • Replacement or repair of necessary personal property lost or damaged, household items such as room furnishings or appliances, and tools and equipment required by the
    self-employed for their jobs
  • Primary vehicles and approved second vehicles damaged by the disaster
  • Reimbursement for eligible child care services

Filling out a U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loan application is a necessary step for homeowners and renters to be considered for additional recovery programs. If the SBA is unable to approve a loan, the applicant may be referred back to FEMA for other types of disaster aid.

FEMA Registration Period in Alabama Closes Tuesday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Federal aid provided to Alabama residents affected by the April 28 through May 5 severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding has reached nearly $38 million.

The following numbers, compiled July 10, provide a snapshot of the Alabama/FEMA disaster recovery to date:

Funds approved:

  • $16.2 million for Housing Assistance grants to help with recovery rental expenses and home repair costs.
  • $3.9 million for Other Needs Assistance to cover essential disaster-related needs, such as medical expenses and lost personal possessions.
  • $14.8 million approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration for low-interest loans to eligible homeowners, renters and businesses.
  • $3 million for Public Assistance programs. Of that amount, $1.2 million has been allocated for debris removal. Another $481,300 will go toward storm response and $1.3 has been obligated for infrastructure repair and replacement.

Survivor Recovery

  • 15,577 damaged homes and property have been inspected (99 percent of requests).
  • 9 counties designated for Individual Assistance.
  • 21 counties designated for Public Assistance.

FEMA works with many volunteer agencies and the private sector to speed the recovery effort. As of mid-May, 3,048 volunteers from numerous organizations throughout the country had donated nearly 22,000 hours to help survivors clean up debris, repair and rebuild their homes following the spring storms.

FEMA’s mitigation outreach program at nine Home Depot and Lowe’s home improvement stores provided 1,600 shoppers with information on rebuilding/repairing homes in a safer and resilient manner. Thank you letters are being presented to participating stores.

Alabama residents affected by the disaster now have just five days to register as the governor-requested extension ends Tuesday, July 15. That date also is the deadline to apply for a physical disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

No matter the degree of loss or insurance status, survivors are urged to apply for help.

Recovery officials urge all Alabama residents who have registered for assistance to stay in close contact with FEMA throughout the recovery process. This is especially true during the first weeks after registering when FEMA housing inspectors must contact applicants to view damages. FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for childcare, medical, dental expenses and/or funeral expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, those who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, transportation, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
