Flood Insurance Workshop for residents to be hosted by FEMA and City of New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA.— The City of New Orleans and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are set to host a flood insurance workshop for the public in September. Residents and other property owners are encouraged to attend to gain a better understanding of how recent flood map changes will affect their flood insurance. The Sept.15 workshop is free, but seating is limited, so attendees must register in advance. For more information and to register, visit www.OrleansParishFloodWorkshop.eventbrite.com.

The proposed Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Orleans Parish are finalized and will become the effective maps on Sept. 30, 2016. These maps are available online at www.Maps.RiskMAP6.com. Residents can view information about their property by navigating to their state, parish and local address.

FEMA is holding a similar, more technical workshop for insurance and real estate professionals tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 26 at City Hall. Registration for this event is now closed. Residents, renters and property owners are encouraged to register for the Sept. 15 flood insurance workshop.

Every disaster survivor has equal access to disaster registration, information, and assistance

Charleston, W.Va – All survivors who sustained damage or losses from the June flooding can get help from local Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs).

If you need an accommodation or assistance due to a disability, please notify Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) staff at the time of registration or anytime throughout the assistance process.

Survivors can meet face-to-face with various agencies and service providers at each DRC. All FEMA DRCs are equally accessible to people with disabilities and provide assistance tools. Use the DRC Locator at http://asd.fema.gov/inter/locator/home.htm to find the DRC closest to you.

The DRCs meet Rehabilitation Act standards:

  • Every disaster survivor has equal access to disaster registration information and assistance.
  • DRCs offer effective communication options including: captioned phones, iPads with video remote interpreting; American Sign Language interpreters upon request; amplified telephones and listening devices for people with hearing loss; phones that display text; and magnifiers for people with vision loss.
  • FEMA documents are available in both Braille, large print, and other formats upon request.

FEMA assistance does not impact government benefits such as food stamps, Medicaid, Social Security, or other benefits.

FEMA Registration Deadline of October 6 Nears

PINE RIDGE, S.D. – The Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are reminding those impacted by the May 8-29 storms that the deadline to register for disaster assistance is right around the corner.  The deadline date is October 6. 

Registration is the first step to receiving disaster assistance.  Individuals can register in person at the Disaster Recovery Center at the SuAnne Big Crow Recreational Center, 1 Positive Pl. – E HWY 18, Pine Ridge. The DRC is open Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Individuals can also register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-3362 or going online to www.disasterassistance.gov or by smart phone or tablet at m.fema.gov. If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY, call 1-800-462-7585; if you use 711 or VRS (Video Relay Service) call 1-800-621-3362.  The registration line is open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. until further notice. 

Even if residents previously registered with the tribe, with a voluntary agency, or provided damage reports they must still register with FEMA to access federal disaster assistance programs.  It is also important, when registering to provide an accurate count of the number of persons living in the home, so that FEMA can provide appropriate assistance; this includes persons with disabilities and others with access and functional needs.  Residents living in tribal housing should also register if they had disaster related damage to personal property.

Applicants who cannot come to the Applicant Registration Site and wish to update their contact information or ask questions concerning Federal Emergency Management Agency correspondence can call FEMA’s toll-free helpline at 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585, Video Relay Service 800-621-3362) from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) or go online to DisasterAssistance.gov.

FEMA and SBA Extend Disaster Assistance Deadlines in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Survivors of the spring floods now have until Wednesday, Sept. 25 to register for disaster assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and return Small Business Administration disaster loan applications.

People with flood-related losses can register online at DisasterAssistance.gov or via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. Registration is also available by calling 800-621-3362, TTY 800-462-7585 or 711/VRS.

FEMA disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. 

The simplest way to complete an SBA application is online by using the electronic loan application. Go to DisasterLoan.SBA.gov/ELA. More information is available by calling the SBA customer service center at 800-659-2955 or TTY 800-877-8339. SBA disaster loans are the largest source of federal recovery funds for individuals with property or content losses. For more information, go to SBA.gov/Disaster.

Through Aug. 27, nearly $2.7 million has been approved for survivors through FEMA’s Individual Assistance program and about $3.4 million in SBA disaster home loans has been approved.

Federal Disaster Aid for Illinois Public Assistance at $1.5 Million

AURORA, Ill. – Federal assistance continues to flow to Illinois as the state recovers from storms and flooding that occurred April 16 through May 5. About $1.5 million has now been obligated to help state, local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations recover.

 

This federal assistance will reimburse for debris removal, and materials—including gravel and sandbags—equipment, and overtime used in responding to the spring’s severe weather event.

FEMA’s Public Assistance is a reimbursement program that helps communities deal with the financial burdens imposed by a disaster. Federal reimbursement is not less than 75 percent of the eligible cost for emergency measures and permanent restoration.  Thus far, more than 631 requests for Public Assistance have been submitted.

Counties designated for public assistance are: Adams, Brown, Bureau, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Clark, Crawford, DuPage, Fulton, Green, Grundy, Hancock, Henderson, Kendall, Knox, Lake, LaSalle, Lawrence, Livingston, Marshall, Mason, McDonough, McHenry, Mercer, Monroe, Morgan, Ogle, Peoria, Pike, Putnam, Rock Island, Schuyler, Scott, Shelby, Stark, Tazewell, Warren, Will, and Woodford.

 

Registration has ended for FEMA Individual Assistance with 97, 286 registrations. To date, $155 million has been disbursed to individuals and families for their recovery. The Small Business Administration has approved $62.9 in disaster loans.

Federal Disaster Aid to Illinois Residents Tops $151 Million

AURORA, Ill. – Registration with FEMA has ended for individuals and households but federal assistance continues to flow to Illinois as the state recovers from storms and flooding that occurred April 16 through May 5. More than $151 million has now been distributed among more than 61,000 individuals and households.

The latest summary of federal assistance includes:

  • More than $151 million in FEMA grants approved for individuals and households;
  • Of that amount, more than $130 million has been approved for housing assistance, including temporary rental assistance and home repair costs;
  • More than $21 million has been approved to cover other essential disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses and damaged personal possessions;
  • More than 90,000 home inspections have been completed to confirm disaster damage;
  • More than $59 million in loans to homeowners, renters or business owners has been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Registration for disaster assistance for individuals and families of 35 counties affected by the disaster ended yesterday, Aug. 8.

Officials ask applicants to stay in touch with FEMA to track a claim or to keep contact information up to date. To ask questions about your claim, or to update contact information, call 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585. Residents can also check online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services should call 800-621–3362. All phone lines are open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Choose Option 2 for Spanish and Option 3 at the Helpline if in need of assistance in other languages. 

In addition to assisting individuals and families, FEMA is helping state, local governments, and certain types of private nonprofit organizations recover from the flooding event. This arm of FEMA assistance, Public Assistance (PA), is a reimbursement program that helps communities deal with the financial burdens imposed by a disaster. The federal share of PA is not less than 75 percent of the eligible cost for emergency measures and permanent restoration.  Thus far, more than 620 requests for Public Assistance have been submitted.

People with storm losses in all counties in New Jersey can register online at DisasterAssistance.gov or via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. Registration is also available by calling 800-621-3362, TTY 800-462-7585 or 711/VRS. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippians who applied for FEMA assistance are urged to stay in touch with the agency for several reasons even after disaster recovery centers closed Oct. 12.

Applicants can track their claims and should notify FEMA of changes to their mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses and if they receive insurance settlements or discover additional damages.

Those who have not registered for FEMA assistance are urged to do so before the registration deadline of Oct. 31.
