Additional Disaster Recovery Center Open

NEW YORK – The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced today that two new Disaster Recovery Centers are opening to assist survivors of Hurricane Sandy. Note that conditions at individual sites may vary and affect opening times. The new locations are:

More than 1,000 FEMA community relations personnel are blanketing damaged neighborhoods, going door-to-door delivering information vital to recovery and encouraging residents with damaged property to register for assistance. They can help refer survivors to the proper resources for any unmet disaster needs, but they do not assess or document damage. FEMA inspectors will contact survivors directly after they have registered.

Individuals do not have to go to a DRC to register with FEMA. Here are some alternatives:

They may apply for FEMA assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling the toll-free registration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). If you have a speech disability or hearing loss and use a TTY, call 1-800-462-7585 directly; if you use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362. Additional Disaster Recovery Center Open

Hurricane Sandy Response Underway in Pennsylvania with FEMA, other Federal Agencies, Commonwealth and Local Officials

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Joint preliminary damage assessments are underway in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, where teams are reviewing Hurricane Sandy damage in several counties.

A preliminary damage assessment is an information-gathering process and does not guarantee federal assistance. Federal, Commonwealth and local officials are working together to assess the damage. The Commonwealth will use the information to determine whether to make an official request for federal assistance.

Pennsylvania Governor Corbett requested joint preliminary damage assessments of Hurricane Sandy-affected counties. FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) have been teamed up with Commonwealth and local officials to review damage to infrastructure, homes and businesses in Berks, Bucks, Franklin, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton and Philadelphia counties. The teams will not visit every home or business.

Earlier this week, the Civil Air Patrol provided officials with a bird’s eye view of damages in Franklin County, flying over Hurricane Sandy-impacted homes and businesses there.

Additionally, FEMA coordinated the issue of 239,703 liters of water; 103,668 shelf-stable meals; 10 infant-toddler kits; and 15 generators in Pennsylvania.

At the request of the Commonwealth, FEMA has been coordinating the installation of generators since before Hurricane Sandy swept through the area. FEMA tasked a specialized U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Emergency Power Planning and Response Team to install generators in locations such as medical facilities, emergency operation centers and emergency shelters.

Community Relations Specialists have been assisting emergency managers in counties impacted by Sandy. Earlier this week, specialists assisted in Kintnersville at the Bucks County American Red Cross Shelter in Palisades High School. The FEMA teams helped distribute water, shelf-stable meals and other necessary supplies at the shelter, where hundreds of Hurricane Sandy-impacted residents have sought assistance.

FEMA will remain in the Commonwealth for as long as necessary, supporting residents impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station Exercise Process To Be Discussed At Public Meeting

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Region VII, announced today the state of Iowa, Clinton County, Iowa, and Scott County, Iowa, will participate with Exelon Corporation in a one-day exercise on December 5, 2012, then host a public meeting to explain exercise processes on December 7, 2012, in support of the Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station.

The routine exercise will test the ability of the state of Iowa, the utility, and the participating counties to protect the health and safety of the public living in the vicinity of the Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station, located on the east side of the Mississippi River, near Cordova, Illinois.

The exercise is a biennial requirement to determine the adequacy of the state and local radiological emergency preparedness and response plans. It will require the activation of emergency facilities by the participating state and local officials. The activities of the state, county and local units of government will be observed and evaluated by the FEMA Region VII Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) Program. The Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station on-site performance will be observed and evaluated by officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

On Friday, December 7, 2012, a public meeting will be held at 11:00 a.m. (CST) in the Scott County Emergency Management Agency facility, located at 1100 East 46th Street, Davenport, Iowa. The purpose of the meeting is to describe and explain the full-scale response exercise process. However, because the process of evaluating the full-scale response exercise will take months, only preliminary findings which are very limited in scope can be shared during the meeting.

Representatives from FEMA Region VII will chair the meeting and explain the exercise process.

Orleans Parish Disaster Recovery Center in Algiers Transitions to SBA Loan Center on Wednesday

BATON ROUGE, La. — To continue serving Louisianians affected by Hurricane Isaac, the State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Algiers is transitioning Wednesday, Nov. 14 to a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Center (DLOC).

SBA representatives at the DLOC will answer questions, explain the application process and help survivors apply for low-interest disaster loans. FEMA Individual Assistance specialists will also be on hand to answer questions and provide information on the types of assistance available to survivors.

BATON ROUGE, La. — The State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers open in Port Sulphur and Braithwaite will change their hours of operation effective Monday, Nov. 5.

The updated hours for these two centers will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, closed Sundays.

Hurricane Survivors Warned of Fake Building Contractors

BATON ROUGE, La. – With more than $218 million in state and federal recovery dollars in the hands of Louisiana’s Hurricane Isaac survivors, fake building contractors and other con artists are angling to get their hands on some of it, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warns.

Scam artists and other criminals often attempt to prey on vulnerable survivors once they have some money in hand to repair their storm-damaged homes. Authorities in Louisiana have already received isolated reports of unscrupulous people doing just that.

“While homeowners are anxious to repair their homes as quickly as they can, we urge them to first check the credentials of anyone offering to do those repairs,” said Gerard M. Stolar, federal coordinating officer for FEMA’s Louisiana-based recovery operation. “Asking just a few questions can save people from a lot of heartache.”

Homeowners do have a valuable resource to help them determine whether someone is a legitimate professional. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors offers an online database that allows people to check up on potential contractors: http://www.lslbc.louisiana.gov/findcontractor.asp.

The site also includes a “For Consumers” pull-down tab, which includes a public education section, complete with tips for hiring contractors and managing costs, including advice on determining appropriate down payments and payment schedules.

The most common post-disaster fraud practices include not only fraudulent building contractors, but phony housing inspectors, bogus pleas for disaster donations and fake offers of state or federal aid. Those who suspect fraud should call the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-5721. Complaints may also be made to local authorities or through the Louisiana Attorney General’s office at 1-800-351-4889 or online at www.ag.state.la.us.

CLINTON, Miss. – Hurricane Isaac survivors who received money from FEMA must keep the receipts or bills for which the money was used for three years.

FEMA assistance must be used for eligible disaster expenses only, as identified in the approval letter from the agency. You must save documentation that demonstrates how the funds were used in meeting your disaster-related needs. Examples include:

Receipts for items purchased for home repair.
Contractor invoices.
Proof of hotel room charges if you received housing assistance.
Rent payment receipts if you received housing assistance.
Receipts for moving and storage expenses.
Receipts for repairing or replacing personal property.

NEW YORK CITY — Since Hurricane Sandy struck New York a week ago, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $156 million to help individuals and families recover from the disaster.

FEMA provides the following snapshot of the disaster recovery effort as of Nov. 6:

More than 123,000 New Yorkers have registered with FEMA for disaster assistance.
20 Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) have been opened in the nine declared counties.
1,556 FEMA personnel deployed to New York in response to Hurricane Sandy.
More than 800 Community Relations (CR) specialists are strategically positioned throughout affected communities, going door to door explaining the types of disaster assistance available and how to register. More teams continue to arrive daily.
More than 1,000 inspectors in the field have completed more than 13,300 home inspections.
New York’s major disaster declaration was amended so that the nine declared counties are approved for all categories of Public Assistance, which includes reimbursement for eligible costs of emergency response services, debris removal and repairs to public infrastructure.
