Once registered, FEMA disaster recovery specialists answer questions about applications or collect information FEMA needs to process the application. Undocumented Immigrants May Qualify for Some Disaster Aid

NORTH LITTLE ROCK – Three weeks after a federal disaster declaration made assistance available, more than $1 million in aid is helping the residents of nine Arkansas counties recover from the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding, May 7 to June 15, 2015.

To date, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, 151 persons have been approved for disaster assistance (as of 7 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 2015).

That assistance includes $710,750 in housing aid to help homeowners and renters:

  • Rent temporary housing for a limited period of time;
  • Repair damage from the disaster to a homeowner’s primary residence that is not covered by insurance. The goal is to make the home safe, sanitary and functional; and,
  • Help replace homes destroyed in the disaster.

The assistance also includes $68,053 to help pay for:

  • Disaster-related medical and dental costs;
  • Disaster-related funeral and burial costs;
  • Clothing, household items, tools required for work and necessary educational materials;
  • Clean-up items;
  • Disaster-damaged vehicles;
  • Moving and storage expenses related to the disaster; and,
  • Other necessary expenses or serious needs as determined by FEMA.

Also, $313,800 in low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters, businesses and private nonprofit organizations has been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration;

Three Weeks’ Later, Federal Assistance Tops $1 Million for Arkansas Recovery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – If the late-April storms, tornadoes and flooding wrecked your home and you still have not found a place to live, an online source of rental housing may help.

ALHousingSearch.org  (Alabama Housing Search) has up-to-date listings of rental properties in most of the larger Alabama towns and cities with prices and interactive maps so a storm survivor may find a suitable location for a household.

Assistance with searches also is provided by toll-free phone—877-428-8844, TTY 800-462-7585, fax, mail and email.

FEMA has contracted with ALHousingsearch.org to help identify qualified rental properties in or near areas of the state where damage may have occurred.  Owners of property suitable for rentals by disaster survivors may submit property listings with photos.

FEMA may pay, through its Individuals and Households program, up to 18 months of rental assistance to both homeowners and renters if they need to relocate while repairs are being made to their disaster-damaged residences.

Residents of Baldwin, Blount, DeKalb, Etowah, Jefferson, Lee, Limestone, Mobile and Tuscaloosa counties who suffered storm damage during the period April 28 through May 5 should apply for assistance by registering online at DisasterAssistance.gov, via smartphone at m.fema.gov or by phone at 800-621-3362, TTY 800-462-7585.  Multilingual operators are available.

An application for continued temporary housing will be sent to applicants who have received initial rental assistance approximately two weeks after the first rental award.

Housing Search Site May Help with Rental Housing Needs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Athens in Limestone County will become an SBA Disaster Loan Outreach Center at the same location beginning Friday, June 13, at 9 a.m.

The SBA Disaster Loan Outreach Center will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Both FEMA and SBA staff will be on hand.

The center is located at the Ripley Woodmen of the World Hall, 11281 Ripley Road, Athens, AL, 35611.

After the FEMA center becomes an SBA center, survivors will still be able to contact FEMA online at DisasterAssistance.gov, via smartphone at m.fema.gov or by phone at 800-621-3362; TTY 800-462-7585.  Multilingual operators are available.

The deadline for individuals to register for federal disaster assistance and to apply for SBA disaster loans is July 1, 2014.

The SBA offers low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations to repair or replace uncompensated losses. The SBA may lend up to $200,000 to repair or replace homes and up to $40,000 to repair or replace personal property.

Loans to businesses, including nonprofits, are available up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster damaged real estate, and other business assets.  Eligible businesses and non-profits can apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster.

The deadline to apply for SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan applications is February 2, 2015.

  • TSA allows eligible individuals and families to stay temporarily in participating hotels, with FEMA and the state picking up the bill for eligible room costs and taxes.
  •  An automated phone message notifies applicants if they are eligible for this period of assistance ending Nov. 30.
  • A total of 140 households stayed in hotels and motels last night under TSA.

Individuals and families who are not eligible for the program may be considered for additional FEMA rental assistance.

DENVER –Once their flood-impacted homes become accessible by regular (not off-road) vehicle, residents should schedule their FEMA housing inspection.

After access is made, residents should contact FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to schedule FEMA inspections.

Inspection access means that the FEMA inspector can drive all the way to the home in an ordinary car. That includes being able to drive across any bridges used to reach the dwelling prior to the flood.

A FEMA housing inspection is the next step in determining what assistance can be provided to residents who have been prevented from returning home.

After the spring storms and flooding that took place between April 16 and May 5, many affected residents have spoken to representatives from insurance companies and state and local agencies about disaster assistance and may be under the mistaken impression they have registered with FEMA. 

The way to know for sure that you have registered with FEMA is if you have been assigned a nine-digit Registration Identification Number, which verifies your registration status.

Many Residents May Mistakenly Believe They Have Registered with FEMA

PURVIS, Miss. – Those affected by the recent Mississippi tornados, storms and flooding can use the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Helpline for more than registering for assistance. It’s a valuable tool in the recovery process.

By calling 800-621-3362, applicants also can:

  • Check status of an application.
  • Get answers to any other questions they might have about their application.
  • Find out if FEMA needs more information and provide it.
  • Receive information on the home inspection process.
  • Get answers to any question regarding insurance and its bearing on FEMA assistance.
  • Update insurance information.
  • Add or delete a person designated to speak for the applicant.
  • Learn how to appeal a FEMA application decision.

WINDSOR, Conn. — Disaster officials offered hope today to property owners and renters coming up short on insurance settlements for damage due to Hurricane Sandy.

Insured disaster survivors must file claims with their insurers, because Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance does not duplicate insurance benefits. However, survivors who do not register for FEMA assistance before the Jan. 28 deadline may discover too late that their insurance payout leaves them uninsured or underinsured for certain items.

Insurance policies may not take into account changes in costs for labor and materials. Policyholders might have reduced coverage to save money during a down economy and find themselves uninsured for some losses.

“Apply for disaster assistance and keep in touch with FEMA on the outcome of your insurance settlement,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Albert Lewis. “A first notice that benefits aren’t available due to insurance could be changed with new information. But if you haven’t registered, that option goes away.”

Examples of cases where insurance may be lacking include the category insurers call Additional Living Expenses, which may not be covered for temporary housing, such as in flood insurance policies. Other uninsured items could be disaster-related medical or dental expenses, vehicle losses, essential tools for workers, or lost computers and books owned by students.

Residents registered for assistance also become eligible to apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. A FEMA registration number is a requirement for individuals to seek SBA disaster loans of up to $200,000 for physical damage losses and up to $40,000 for contents. However, businesses may apply for disaster loans without first applying for FEMA assistance.

Survivors can register online anytime day or night at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or with a smartphone or other Web-enabled device at m.fema.gov. Survivors can also register by phone anytime by calling FEMA at 800-621-3362. The TTY number is 800-462-7585. Multilingual operators are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Registering for disaster assistance with other agencies or organizations does not register survivors for FEMA disaster assistance.
