JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Two home improvement stores in Crawford County are teaming up with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide local residents with free information, tips, flyers and brochures to prevent and lessen damage from disasters. 

FEMA mitigation specialists will be available over the next five days to answer questions and offer home improvement tips on making homes stronger and safer against disasters. Most of the information is geared toward do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Advisers will be available March 17-21 at the

  • Lowe’s at 760 Eagles Court, Sullivan, MO 63080
    • Hours:
      • Thursday through Saturday and Monday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
      • Sunday 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Advisers will be available March 17- 19 and March 21 at the

  • Meek’s Lumber and Hardware at 10875 N. Service Road West, Bourbon, MO 65441
    • Hours:
      • Thursday, Friday and Monday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
      • Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon.
      • Closed Sunday.

There Are Many Ways for Mississippi December Storms Survivors to Get Help

OXFORD, Miss. — In addition to causing physical damage, the December storms in Mississippi affected people’s jobs, emotional state or left them needing legal help. There are programs available to help survivors with these issues as they recover.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance

People in Benton, Coahoma, Marshall, Monroe, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman and Tippah counties, who were unable to work due to the December storms, tornadoes and flooding may apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Individuals can apply online at mdes.ms.gov or by calling toll-free 877-633-7275 or 601-321-5419 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

You may be eligible to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance if:

  • You became the major supporter for a household because of the disaster-related death of the head of the household;
  • You cannot work because of an injury caused as a direct result of the disaster;
  • You could not work or lost work as a result of physical damage or destruction of a business; or
  • You are unable to work because of the physical inaccessibility of the place of employment due to its closure by the federal government.

The Disaster Assistance Unemployment program is administered by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. The deadline to apply in Benton, Coahoma, Marshal, Quitman and Tippah counties is Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016.

The deadline to apply in Monroe, Panola and Prentiss counties is Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016.

Free legal help for storms survivors

The Young Lawyers Division Disaster Legal Services Committee of Mississippi is providing free legal assistance to survivors in Benton, Coahoma, Marshall, Monroe, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman and Tippah counties. Speak to volunteer attorneys by calling 877-691-6185 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

You may get free legal help for:

  • Assistance with life, medical and property insurance claims.
  • Home repair contracts and contractors.
  • Replacement of wills and other important legal documents lost or destroyed in the disaster.
  • Questions regarding landlord-tenant issues and mortgages foreclosures.

Disaster Related Stress

Survivors dealing with high levels of stress after the December storms may call the Mississippi Department of Mental Health hotline at 877-210-8513 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The call is free and confidential.

Mississippi Disaster Recovery Centers Change Hours, Days

OXFORD, Miss. – The disaster recovery centers open in Benton, Coahoma, Marshall, Quitman and Tippah counties are changing their hours of operation, effective Monday, Jan. 18.

The centers will now be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday until further notice. The centers will be closed on Sundays.

Anyone who needs reasonable accommodations when visiting the centers may request them by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362. People who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired and use a TTY should call 800-462-7585.

Holiday Hours for Disaster Recovery Centers

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Disaster recovery centers in South Carolina will operate on different schedules around the New Year’s holiday.

All recovery centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and be closed on New Year’s Day. Most of the centers will reopen Jan. 2 and operate from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit asd.fema.gov/inter/locator/home.htm or call 800-621-3362 to find the closest center.

The deadline for registering for FEMA assistance is Jan. 3, 2016. Because the deadline falls on a Sunday, FEMA will accept registrations through the following business day, Monday, Jan. 4. Survivors also have until Jan. 4 to return SBA disaster loan applications.

Many services available at disaster recovery centers are available by calling the FEMA helpline. Applicants can get help by calling 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585; those who use 711/VRS can call 800-621-3362. Lines are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice and will be closed New Year’s Day.

 

Survivors can use the helpline to:

  • Register for federal assistance. Households should register only once.
  • Ask questions about FEMA decision letters.
  • Learn how to appeal FEMA decision letters. All applicants may appeal.
  • Inquire about the status of a registration.
  • Provide change of address, telephone and bank account numbers and insurance information to avoid disaster assistance processing delays.
  • Receive information about FEMA home inspections.
  • Get questions answered about federal disaster assistance and the application process.

Applicants should have their nine-digit FEMA registration number and ZIP code if they want to discuss their application.

Holly Hill Disaster Recovery Center Transitions to Disaster Loan Outreach Center

COLUMBIA, S.C.  – The Holly Hill disaster recovery center will transition to a disaster loan outreach center beginning Monday, Dec. 14 to accommodate the needs of South Carolina flood survivors.

Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration will be available to meet with homeowners, renters and business owners who had disaster-related damage to answer questions, explain SBA’s disaster loan program, help them complete their applications and close approved disaster loans.

The center is located at:

  • Holly Hill Government Building, Suite B at 8423 Old State Road in Holly Hill

The center is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Survivors with questions about an SBA disaster loan application can also call the SBA Disaster Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 or TTY 800-877-8339 or email DisasterCustomerService@sba.gov.
