Last Chance to Visit Disaster Recovery Centers in Marion, Wayne Counties – Others Remain Open

PURVIS, Miss. – The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency remind those who want to meet with disaster recovery specialists that Saturday, March 2 will be the last day Disaster Recovery Centers in Marion and Wayne counties will be open. Three other centers will remain open.

Wayne and Marion county centers below will serve visitors from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday.

  • Mount Carmel Church of God, 573 Mount Carmel Church Rd., Foxworth
  • Waynesboro Fire Station, 710 Wayne St Waynesboro

Survivors can still meet with disaster-recovery specialists at three centers Monday through Saturday,

8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Ben McNair Recreation Center, 300 North 12th Ave., Hattiesburg
  • Petal Civic Center, 712 S. Main St., Petal
  • Lamar Park, 226 Pinewood Drive, Hattiesburg

Individuals can register for assistance online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. Applicants also may call 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585. Applicants who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services can call 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers operate 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week until further notice. C-Spire customers can register by calling #362.

Federal disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property loss and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.

FEMA Distributes $1.8 Million To Support Mississippi Recovery

PURVIS, Miss. – More than $1.8 million in federal disaster assistance is in the hands of survivors of the recent storms, tornadoes and flooding in Mississippi. This includes more than $1.3 million for housing assistance and $489,523 for other needs.

While there is still much work to be done, this money contributes significantly to the recovery effort from the recent disaster.

Here are some numbers at a glance as of midnight 2/26/13:

  • 2,404 Mississippians have registered for assistance at 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585) or through the online application site at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or on their smartphone at m.fema.gov.
  • 988 Mississippians have visited the five Disaster Recovery Centers for information and help about the disaster recovery process. The centers are open in Forrest, Lamar, Marion and Wayne counties.          
  • 1,405 home inspections have been completed by the 10 FEMA-contracted inspectors in the field—a 93-percent completion rate.
  • 1,218 disaster-loan applications have been issued by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The SBA has staff members at every FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Center in Mississippi to provide one-on-one help to those seeking disaster assistance.
  • FEMA is working with state and other eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations in Forrest, Lamar, Marion and Wayne counties to identify and reimburse 75 percent of disaster-related costs associated of emergency protective measures, debris removal, and the repair and restoration of damaged infrastructure.

Storm Aid to Southern Mississippi Counties Expanded

STORM AID TO SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI COUNTIES EXPANDED

CLINTON, MISS. – More than two dozen southern Mississippi counties will receive additional types of reimbursement for Hurricane Isaac storm recovery.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency can reimburse 75 percent of the eligible cost to repair road systems and bridges, water control facilities, public buildings and contents, public utilities, parks, recreational and other key public facilities in the following counties:

Adams, Amite, Claiborne, Copiah, Covington, Franklin, George, Greene, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marion, Newton, Pearl River, Perry, Pike, Smith, Stone, Walthall, Wayne and Wilkinson counties are eligible for repair money.

FEMA previously agreed to reimburse much of the cost of debris removal and emergency protective measures in the following counties in Mississippi:

Adams,  Amite, Attala, Carroll, Claiborne, Clarke, Copiah, Covington, Forrest, Franklin, George, Greene, Grenada, Hancock, Harrison, Hinds, Holmes, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis,  Jones, Kemper, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Leake, Lincoln, Madison, Marion, Montgomery, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee, Pearl River, Perry, Pike, Rankin, Scott, Simpson, Smith, Stone, Walthall, Warren, Winston, Wayne, Wilkinson, and Yazoo, plus the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – State and federal Disaster Recovery Centers in Fairmont (Marion County), Dunlow and Wayne (both in Wayne County) will close permanently at noon on Friday, April 13, officials said Saturday. Two other centers, one in Logan County and one in Lincoln County, will remain open until further notice.

  • Verdunville Volunteer Fire Dept., Rte. 5, 2270 Mud Fork Road in Logan; and
  • Duval Fire Company, 5237 Straightfork Road, Griffithsville

The centers are staffed with disaster recovery specialists who can provide information and answer questions about storm-related assistance. Those seeking assistance should register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency before visiting a DRC.

The closing of the three DRCs has no effect on the ability of those seeking federal and state assistance for damages sustained during the recent tornadoes, severe storms and flooding to register, which is the first step in asking for help. Deadline for Lincoln, Marion and Wayne county residents to register is May 15; for residents of Logan County, the deadline is May 21.

Applicants can register by phone by calling FEMA’s Helpline at 800-621-3362. They can also use the Help Line to answer questions, provide information or learn the status of their application. People with hearing disabilities can use the TTY number, 800-462-7585. Information to have ready when registering with FEMA includes the address of the damaged property, names of members of the household, a general description of the damage, the Social Security number of any family member living in the home, the extent of insurance coverage and certain other information needed to expedite the process.
