SEATTLE – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Stevens County Complex Fire burning in Stevens County, Washington.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. Murphy approved the state of Washington’s request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) at 12:51 a.m. PDT on Aug. 15, 2015.

At the time of the request, the complex had burned four homes and eight outbuildings near Addy and over 1,000 homes were evacuated. There are sixteen known fires (Heine Rd, Marble Valley, Gold Hill, Finley Gulch, Fruitland, Lime 2, China Creek, Elbow Lake, Flat Creek, Deep Lake, Squaw Creek, Paradise Peak, Bonanza Hill, Grouse Mountain, and Hall Mountain) threatening homes, infrastructure, natural and cultural resources across the county. Shelters have been established at Gess Elementary, Oroville High School and Republic High School.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Washington’s eligible firefighting costs for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

FMAGs are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; mobilization and demobilization activities; and tools, materials and supplies.

DENVER – The Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have scheduled Preliminary Damage Assessments for several additional counties in Colorado as a result of the severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, landslides, and mudslides that occurred between May 4 and June 16, 2015.

Assessments are scheduled to begin Wednesday, July 29, in Boulder and Park Counties, Thursday, July 30, in Arapahoe and Denver Counties, and Tuesday, August 4 in Adams County.

The assessment teams are comprised of federal, state and local emergency management officials who will conduct verified damage assessments. The findings will be provided to Governor John Hickenlooper’s office for review. 

The damage assessments are not a guarantee of a federal disaster declaration for these counties, but will be used by the Governor to determine if the damages warrant their addition to the DR-4229 major disaster declaration.

On July 16, President Obama issued a disaster declaration for Baca, Elbert, El Paso, Fremont, Logan, Morgan, Pueblo, Saguache, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma counties, making state, county, and local governments, as well as certain non-profit organizations, eligible to receive reimbursement for repairing infrastructure damage caused by the storms, as well as the cost of responding to them.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the State of Arizona to combat the Willow Fire burning in Mohave County.

On August 8, 2015 the State of Arizona submitted a request for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) Declaration for the Willow Fire.  At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 150 primary homes in and around the communities of Topack Lake Ranchos and Delta City.  Mandatory evacuations were taking place for approximately 400 people.  The fire started on August 8, 2015 and has burned in excess of 6,000 total acres.

The Regional Administrator for FEMA’s Region IX office determined that the Willow Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster and approved the State’s request on August 8, 2015.

The Disaster Relief Fund provides funding for FMAGs through FEMA to assist in fighting fires which threaten to cause major disasters. Eligible costs covered by FMAGs can include expenses for field camps; equipment use; repair and replacement; tools; materials; supplies and mobilization and demobilization activities.

Arizona to receive FEMA funding to battle Willow Fire in Mohave County

SEATTLE – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Stouts Creek Fire, burning in Douglas County, Oregon.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator, Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the Stouts Creek Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. Murphy approved the state’s request for federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) on July 31, 2015 at 1:33 a.m. PDT.

The fire started on July 30, 2015, and at the time of the request, the fire was threatening 300 primary residences in and around the communities of Milo, Tiller, Drew, and neighboring areas. The fire was also threatening high value timberland, cultural resources, camp grounds, wildlife areas, power lines and community infrastructure. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations were issued for approximately 60 people. One Red Cross shelter was opened in Glendale, Oregon. The fire has burned in excess of 6,000 acres of federal, state and private lands.  The Federal Principal Advisor confirmed the threat to community and homes due to favorable burning conditions and significant threat.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Oregon’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. FEMA provides federal funds to help fight Stouts Creek Fire

BATON ROUGE, La. – A July 21 amendment to the major disaster declaration for Louisiana following the severe storms and flooding occurring May 18 through June 20 now includes Public Assistance (PA) for an additional parish – Rapides Parish.

Bossier, Caddo, Grant, Natchitoches and Red River parishes were also made eligible to receive PA funding by the July 13 major disaster declaration. PA funding helps repair or rebuild public infrastructure such as roads; bridges; water system; utilities; and schools. It also covers costs involving emergency protective measures and debris removal.

Supplementary funding under the PA program goes to the state and its agencies, local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations. Under the program, FEMA obligates funds to the state for 75 percent of eligible costs, while the applicant covers the remaining 25 percent. The state forwards the federal funds to the eligible local governments or organizations that incurred costs.

Another Louisiana Parish is Eligible to Receive Federal Disaster Assistance

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the state of California to combat the North Fire burning in San Bernardino County. 

On July 17, 2015, the State of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the North Fire and FEMA approved the state’s request on July 17, 2015. The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening up to threatening 2,700 homes in and around the community of Baldy Mesa, population 54,142. Mandatory evacuations took place on July 17th for approximately 7,600 people and have now been lifted.  The fire started on June 17, 2015, and, at this time, has burned in excess of 4,250 acres. Three residences have been destroyed by the fire.

California to receive FEMA funding to battle North Fire in San Bernardino County

OKLAHOMA CITY – Federal disaster assistance is now available to five more counties in Oklahoma as a result of the May 5 to June 4 storms. They are Delaware, Greer, Harmon, Nowata and Mayes counties.

Public Assistance funding helps repair or rebuild public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, water systems, utilities and public buildings such as schools.

Types of entities that may be eligible for Public Assistance include:

  • Local governments and special districts;
  • Certain private nonprofit organizations or institutions that conduct activities of a governmental nature and are open to the general public;
  • Federally recognized tribes; and
  • State government agencies.

FEMA Public Assistance Extended to Include Five Additional Oklahoma Counties

OKLAHOMA CITY – More than $26 million has been granted to Oklahomans, helping to rebuild the lives of families and businesses impacted by the recent storms.

Signs of recovery are becoming visible following the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding occurring May 5 through June 4. Since the May 26 major disaster declaration, state and federal disaster officials say residents continue to seek help.

More than 8,403 families have registered for assistance with the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The total federal disaster funding approved for Oklahomans is $26.6 million. This includes:

  • $12.1 million in Individual Assistance (IA)
    • $10.3 million for Housing Assistance
    • more than $1.7 million for Other Needs, such as repair or replacement of personal property essential to the home.
  • There have been 131 claims paid to Oklahomans through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which total $4,193,945.
  • SBA has approved more than $10,473,100 in loans. This includes:
    • $10,060,700 million for homeowners
    • $412,400 for business owners.

Low-interest SBA disaster loans may be available to businesses of all sizes as well as certain private nonprofit organizations. Homeowners and renters are also eligible for SBA loans for uninsured loss. These loans cannot duplicate benefits from other agencies or compensation from other organizations.

FEMA has had up to 88 Disaster Survivor Assistance specialists going door-to-door in the affected counties. To date, they have visited 16,538 homes, 1,054 businesses, and 717 community-based organizations delivering recovery information and guidance. These specialists have also registered 571 survivors for disaster assistance.

Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are currently open throughout the state where 3,184 visitors have met face-to-face with representatives from OEM, FEMA and SBA.

Oklahoma Disaster Assistance Tops $26 Million

DENTON, Texas – On Oct. 6, 2014, at the request of Governor Susana Martinez, President Obama declared a major disaster for the state of New Mexico. In June 2015, the state of New Mexico was awarded more than $3 million in federal disaster assistance for repairs to roads in Lincoln County following severe storms and flooding in July and August 2014. The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management continues to administer the funds and provide support to the county as it recovers.

The severe weather and floodwaters washed away a total of 15 roads. The funding covers the excavation of the roads; the hauling and replacement of gravel; the shaping and grading of the roads; and hazard mitigation measures to reduce the risk of future storm damage. 

The funding is made possible by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance program. To date, FEMA has obligated more than $5.9 million in relation to the last year’s severe storms and flooding.

The funding represents a 75 percent federal cost share. FEMA awards funding for projects directly to the state of New Mexico; the state then disburses the grant to the eligible applicant.

It is important that citizens take appropriate measures to protect themselves and their families. There are actions that should be taken before, during and after an event that are unique to each hazard. Identify the hazards that have happened or could happen in your area and plan for the unique actions for each. 

Local emergency management offices can help identify the hazards in your area and outline the local plans and recommendations for each. Share the hazard-specific information with family members and include pertinent materials in your family disaster plan.

New Mexico Awarded More than $3 Million for Road Repairs in Lincoln County

On June 17, 2015, the State of Arizona submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Kearney River Fire and FEMA approved the state’s request on June 17, 2015. The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening up to 400 homes in and around the community of Kearney, which has a population of approximately 1,950. Mandatory evacuations took place on June 17th for approximately 300 – 400 people.  The evacuation order was lifted this morning.  The fire started on June 17, 2015, and, at this time, has burned in excess of 450 acres of state and private land.  Two residences have been destroyed by the fire.
