Livingston Parish Schools Clean Up and Reopen with Federal Help

BATON ROUGE, La. –Livingston Parish school campuses have reopened for students and teachers with the help of a $17.5 million FEMA grant.

The grant paid for work to eliminate health and safety hazards so thousands of Livingston Parish students could return to school. Damage from August’s floods forced parish schools to close for a month. Students returned to the following 11 refurbished Livingston Parish school campuses: Doyle Elementary, Holden School, Springfield Elementary, Denham Springs Junior High, Freshwater Elementary, Northside Elementary, Lewis Vincent Elementary, Seventh Ward Elementary, Walker Freshman High, Westside Junior High and Live Oak High.

The funding also assisted the following five campuses where more recovery work remains before they reopen: Denham Springs Elementary, Denham Springs Freshman High, Denham Springs High, Southside Elementary and Southside Junior High.

The $17.5 million came from FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) program. The program helps to repair or replace critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, public buildings and schools. PA also helps certain private nonprofit organizations.

FEMA typically reimburses 75 percent of eligible PA expenses. However, FEMA will reimburse applicants 90 percent of eligible PA expenses given the magnitude of the August floods.

Disaster Assistance Nears $12 Million in Livingston Parish

BATON ROUGE, La. – Nearly six months since the Aug. 29, 2012, federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Isaac in Louisiana, nearly $12 million in state and federal disaster assistance has been approved for the parish. Disaster assistance for survivors and their communities in Livingston Parish now totals $11,999,429.

Livingston Parish by the Numbers

TOTAL Individual Assistance grants: $7,900,306

Housing Assistance approved: $6,906,944
Other Needs Assistance approved: $993,362

TOTAL Public Assistance obligations: $1,253,023

TOTAL U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loans: $2,846,100

Free crisis counseling is still available to children and adults in Livingston Parish by calling 866-295-6495 or after hours and weekends, 800-272-8367. Trained counselors are provided by a network of state human services authorities and districts to take calls and meet with survivors face to face if a follow-up session is needed.

“Programs such as crisis counseling are in place to meet the continuing emotional needs of survivors,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Gerard Stolar of FEMA. “Receiving the right support can help most survivors continue to move on with their lives following Hurricane Isaac.”

BATON ROUGE, La. — Time is running out for Hurricane Isaac survivors in Livingston Parish to visit the State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers in Maurepas and Livingston, as both centers close this week. The Maurepas center closes at 6 p.m. Wednesday and the Livingston center closes at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Although the centers will close, Hurricane Isaac survivors can still contact FEMA online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov. Applicants may also call 1-800-621-3362 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. Those who use 711 Relay or Video Relay Services may call 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Survivors may also contact the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) after the center closes at 1-800-659-2955 or www.sba.gov.

At the recovery centers, hurricane survivors can speak directly with federal specialists who can provide answers to their questions about the types of assistance available to eligible applicants, check on the status of a survivor’s application, provide answers about ineligibility letters and filing an appeal, and explain other programs that may be available to them. The agency representatives do not distribute cash, checks or debit cards.
