Brevard County: Get Answers, Rebuild Stronger

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Residents with disabilities or access and functional needs affected by the recent hurricanes in Florida can find many resources to assist in applying for federal disaster assistance.

Every resident in a declared disaster area receives the same services and assistance. This is a FEMA commitment.

FEMA Individual Assistance (IA) is available in nine counties affected by Hurricane Matthew: Brevard, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns, Volusia and Indian River Counties. Residents in eight counties affected by Hurricane Hermine are also eligible to apply: Leon, Dixie, Levy, Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties.

Survivors can register the following ways:

  • Online at DisasterAssistance.gov.

  • Download the FEMA mobile app.

  • Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 (voice, 711/VRS-Video Relay Service) (TTY: 800-462-7585). Multilingual operators are available (for Spanish, press 2).

FEMA’s disaster recovery centers are locations where survivors can meet face-to-face with various agencies and service providers. The centers are equipped with accessibility kits that offer accommodations to meet the needs of the entire community, including people with disabilities and other access and functional needs.

In addition to accommodating survivors with disabilities, FEMA also reaches out to people with limited English proficiency by providing multilingual operators, making printed literature available in multiple languages and having translators available in the field. FEMA grants do not have to be repaid. FEMA assistance is nontaxable and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid or other federal benefits.

Register with FEMA as soon as possible and, if asked, complete and return a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loan application. There is no charge to apply for the loan and no obligation to accept it if approved. Homeowners can receive loans of up to $200,000 to repair or replace their primary residences. Homeowners and renters may also borrow up to $40,000 to replace damaged or destroyed personal property including vehicles.

Services Available for Matthew, Hermine Survivors with Disabilities, Access Needs

RALEIGH, N.C. – A Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is a readily accessible facility where you may go for information about federal, state and other disaster assistance programs, and to ask questions related to your situation. It is more personal than the telephone. 

You can meet face-to-face with representatives from North Carolina Emergency Management, Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Small Business Administration, volunteer groups and other agencies at the centers to get answers to your questions about disaster assistance.

Some of the services offered at a DRC may include:

  • Guidance about disaster recovery and eligibility
  • Assistance applying
  • Application status updates
  • Clarification of any written correspondence received
    • Please read your FEMA letter carefully to understand FEMA’s decision and what you need to do next. Many times there is just a request to submit extra documents in order for FEMA to process your application.
    • You may need to include an insurance settlement letter, proof of residence, proof of ownership of the damaged property, and/or proof that the damaged property was your primary residence at the time of the disaster.
  • Housing assistance and rental resource information you may not know is available
  • Referrals to other agencies and state programs that may provide further assistance
  • Information about disaster related funeral and other needs assistance
  • Information about low-interest disaster loans.

All disaster recovery centers offer effective communication options, including captioned phones, iPads with video remote interpreting, assistive listening devices, magnifiers and onsite American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters upon request. Both Braille and Large Print FEMA documents are available. If you require a reasonable accommodation (ASL interpreting, Braille large print, etc.) while visiting a DRC, call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 for voice, 711 and Video Relay Service (VRS). If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY, call 800-462-7585.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. Advantages of Visiting a Joint State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center

ATLANTA – Homeowners, renters and business owners in Evans, Liberty and Long counties may apply for federal disaster assistance for Hurricane Matthew damage and losses in Georgia.  In addition to the three counties now eligible to apply for assistance under FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program, seven counties had already received approval to apply for assistance, including Bryan, Bulloch, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, McIntosh and Wayne

Damage and losses from the hurricane and flooding must have occurred Oct. 4-15.

Survivors are encouraged to register with FEMA the following ways:

Evans, Liberty and Long Counties May Apply for Disaster Assistance for Matthew Damage in Georgia

BATON ROUGE, La. – If you or someone you know wants to apply for federal disaster assistance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency probably can provide a translator or interpreter who speaks your language.

When you call the FEMA helpline, 800-621-3362, you will be asked in English to press “1” for English, or in Spanish, to press “2” for Spanish. If you do not press “1” or “2”, and do not hang up, an English-speaking registration assistant will answer and a language translator will be brought on line to assist the caller in registering for FEMA assistance. FEMA is able to provide translators for most languages.

To register, go online to DisasterAssistance.gov or call the FEMA helpline. Help is available in most languages and phone lines are open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. An American Sign Language interpreter can be made available at the Disaster Recovery Center when you visit.

Disaster survivors who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585 to register. Those who use 711 or Video Relay Service may call 800-621-3362. Charleston, W.Va – All survivors who sustained damage or losses from the June flooding can get help from local Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs).

If you need an accommodation or assistance due to a disability, please notify Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) staff at the time of registration or anytime throughout the assistance process.

FEMA has made it a priority to reach everyone who needs help – including people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs, older adults and people with limited English proficiency – to make sure all survivors’ needs are met.

Accommodating survivors
