Jefferson Davis County Designated for Disaster Assistance

PURVIS, Miss. – Jefferson Davis County has been designated for disaster assistance to households

and businesses as part of Mississippi’s federal disaster declaration, according to officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  Counties previously designated are Forrest, Lamar, Marion and Wayne.

The first step in receiving assistance is to register, which is a simple process. There are several ways:

Online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by mobile device at m.fema.gov any time day or night.

  • By phone or video relay at 800-621-FEMA (3362) daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time. Help is available in many languages.
  • By TTY at 800-462-7585.
  • C-Spire Wireless customers can register by calling #362.

Homeowners and renters can register for federal disaster assistance that may help pay for:

  • Temporary housing.
  • Home repairs.
  • Other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other assistance programs.
  • Low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration that may cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.

People in Jefferson Davis County who have already registered for federal disaster assistance do not need to do so again. If they have any questions about their applications for disaster assistance, they should call 800-621-3362.

Knowing flood risks allows for more informed decisions

DENTON, Texas –Homeowners, renters and business owners in Greater New Orleans area are encouraged to look over newly released preliminary flood maps in order to determine their flood risks and make informed decisions.

Local officials from Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles and Jefferson parishes, the state of Louisiana and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are presenting the preliminary maps to communities impacted by the new Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS) in order to help leaders and residents identify known flood risks and use that information to make decisions about buying flood insurance and how the community should move forward with any development.

“As we work together with our state and local partners to bring this critical information to the parishes, we ask that everyone review the maps to understand what flood risks are involved,” said R6 Regional Administrator Tony Robinson. “The role of the community as an active partner in the flood mapping process is very important.”

Preliminary Flood Maps in Jefferson County, Texas Ready for Public View

Public Open House Scheduled to Share Map Changes and Flood Risk Information

DENTON, Texas –Homeowners, renters and business owners in Jefferson County, Texas are encouraged to look over newly released preliminary flood maps in order to determine their flood risks and make informed decisions.

Jefferson County officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are presenting the preliminary maps to communities and unincorporated areas in order to help leaders and residents identify known flood risks and use that information to make decisions about buying flood insurance and how the community should move forward with any development.

The Texas-based coastal flood mapping effort follows the release of a new, comprehensive storm surge study from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) that gives updated information on coastal flood risks. To share that data, a public workshop has been scheduled in the county where interested citizens can obtain more information about the proposed changes.

Louisiana Disaster Recovery Centers to Close for Thanksgiving Day Holiday

BATON ROUGE, La. — The remaining two State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers in Louisiana will be closed for Thanksgiving, on Thursday, Nov. 22.

The centers in St. John and Jefferson parishes will resume operations on Friday, Nov. 23. They are located at:

Hours for both centers are: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Time is running out for Hurricane Isaac survivors in Jefferson Parish to visit the State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Marrero. The center closes permanently at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov.10.

Although the center will close, Hurricane Isaac survivors can visit the other two Jefferson Parish recovery centers located in Lafitte and Metairie.

Disaster Recovery Centers Open in Jefferson Parish

BATON ROUGE, La. —  Two State/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster Recovery Centers are open in Jefferson Parish through Oct. 2 to assist homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage to their home or personal property as a result of Hurricane Isaac.

The recovery centers are located at:

The centers are open every day except Sunday through Oct. 2. Hours for both centers are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

At the recovery centers, hurricane survivors in Jefferson Parish can speak directly with federal specialists who can provide answers to their questions about the types of assistance available to eligible applicants, check on the status of a survivor’s application, provide answers about ineligibility letters and filing an appeal, and explain other programs that may be available to them. The agency representatives do not distribute cash, checks or debit cards.

“Visiting a center is a great opportunity for people to talk with recovery specialists and get questions answered,” said FEMA’s Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Hall. “Although it’s a good idea to register with FEMA before visiting a center, these caring professionals are there to walk you through the process if you need help.”

Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will be on hand to answer questions, explain the application process and help each resident or business owner apply to SBA. For SBA information or to apply online, visit www.sba.gov or call 1-800-659-2955. Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing may call 1-800-877-8339.

CLINTON, Miss. – The following are Hurricane Isaac recovery news items from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency during the previous week.

  • FEMA is sending out determination letters to those who registered telling them the status of their application. Those who don’t understand the letter or disagree with FEMA’s decision should visit a Disaster Recovery Center or call the FEMA Helpline (800-621-FEMA) to get more information and assistance with questions.
  • FEMA inspectors are currently visiting the residences of disaster applicants in Mississippi to assess damages related to Hurricane Isaac. Applicants can speed up the process by having the appropriate documents, such as identification and proof of ownership or occupancy.
  • Public buildings and infrastructure are now eligible for reimbursement in Adams, Amite, Claiborne, Copiah, Covington, Franklin, George, Greene, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marion, Newton, Pearl River, Perry, Pike, Smith, Stone, Walthall, Wayne and Wilkinson counties for 75 percent of the cost to repair road systems and bridges, water control facilities, public buildings and contents, public utilities, parks, recreational and other key public facilities.
  • Disaster recovery centers are open in Adams, Clarke, Forrest, George, Hancock, Harrison, Hinds, Jackson, Lincoln, Marion, Pearl River, Pike, Stone, Walthall and Wilkinson counties.
  • Community relations specialists from MEMA and FEMA are going door to door in 17 designated counties to provide information about how to register for federal and state disaster assistance.

FEMA Mitigation Advisers to Offer Rebuilding Tips in Jefferson Parish

BATON ROUGE, La. — Survivors from Jefferson Parish who are rebuilding after Hurricane Isaac can receive a free consultation with hazard mitigation advisers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The free mitigation stations will be open on a walk-in basis at Lowe’s in Jefferson starting Friday.

The advisers can answer questions about protecting homes from future disaster-related damage, as well as offer tips and techniques to build hazard-resistant homes. Most of the information and the free publications provided are geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Hurricane safety and recovery topics to be covered include preparedness, roof repair, rebuilding flooded homes, and mold and mildew cleanup and prevention.

Storm surge study provides update on flood risks in Jefferson and Orange Counties

DENTON, Texas – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is updating flood maps in Jefferson and Orange, Texas counties following the release of a new, comprehensive storm surge study from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) that gives updated information on coastal flood risks

As FEMA works to update the new flood maps, the agency is working closely with its federal, state and local partners to help these two coastal counties better understand the current flood risk so that action can be taken to reduce that risk.

Meetings with local officials have already taken place and open houses for the general public are currently being scheduled.  The local workshops provided an opportunity for local officials to review the storm surge study methods and get an update on the project’s progress.  The Open Houses help to educate the public about the current flood risks in their area.

The Texas-based coastal flood mapping effort is part of FEMA’s comprehensive approach to integrating flood hazard identification and analysis with risk communications for affected coastal counties. In addition to the two counties, the effort also includes Aransas, Brazoria, Calhoun, Cameron, Chambers, Galveston, Harris, Jackson, Kleberg, Matagorda, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Victoria and Willacy counties.
