Centro de recuperación por desastre abre en Sicily Island para ayudar a los sobrevivientes de Louisiana

WASHINGTON —The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Continuity Programs’ Integrated Public Alert and Warning System Division has begun to assess the feasibility of a public alert and warning capability that is being developed in the private sector.

New technologies could deliver detailed emergency information to the public with pictures and videos of evacuation routes, storm tracks, and shelter information – increasing community preparedness before, during, and after a disaster. The media alerts will be able to include multilingual and multi-format information to warn non-English speaking populations and people with access and functional needs.

“FEMA is committed to working with the private sector to examine and improve future alerts and warnings,” said Roger Stone, Acting Assistant Administrator for National Continuity Programs. “New systems could someday include pictures and video as part of the advanced alert and warning information provided to the general public.”

One such technology being considered is the Advanced Warning and Response Network (AWARN).  AWARN works by using advanced capabilities in the next generation of digital television broadcast system called ATSC 3.0 being standardized by the Advanced Television Systems Committee.  The emerging television broadcast standard provides for the transmission of large media rich, data messages over-the-air to mobile, portable, and fixed television and video devices without interrupting ongoing television shows.

FEMA’s IPAWS is a national system for local alerting. IPAWS enables authorities at all levels of government to alert and warn people in areas endangered by disasters. IPAWS is used by federal, state, and local authorities to send emergency alerts to cellular phones as Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs), to radio and television as Emergency Alert System (EAS) broadcasts, to NOAA Weather Radios, and to an All-Hazards Alert and Information Feed for Internet applications, services, and websites.

For more information on IPAWS, go to www.fema.gov/ipaws

WASHINGTON – Today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) launched a free Spanish-language app with information on what individuals can do before, during and after a disaster to keep their families and communities safe.

FEMA’s Spanish-language app offers a wide array of information for the public and disaster survivors, including preparedness tips, locations of nearby shelters, what to include in an emergency supply kit and a user friendly interface for survivors who may need assistance from FEMA after a disaster.

“You can take the first step to disaster preparedness with just the swipe of your finger,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. “Smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices have made our lives more convenient – this app empowers us to be prepared. The FEMA app is now available in Spanish. I encourage everyone to download it today to have access to the latest information on steps to take before, during and after a disaster.”

Some key features of the app include:

  • Safety Tips: This feature helps users prepare for flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters by providing tips on how to be informed about potential hazards and what steps to take before, during and after an emergency.
  • Emergency Meeting Locations: This tool offers the capability to set an emergency meeting place for you and your family with the option of having a primary, secondary and out of state location.
  • Apply for Assistance: The FEMA Spanish-language App will help users locate a disaster recovery center after a Major Disaster Declaration with Individual Assistance has been issued. This feature also provides information about how to offer volunteer services and donations.

The app offers pre-loaded content ensuring that FEMA guidance is available anytime and anywhere – even if no Internet connection is available. The app is free and available for iPhones and Android devices in the iTunes and the Google Play Stores.

FEMA Launches Spanish-Language App

WASHINGTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), through its Caribbean Area office in Puerto Rico and in coordination with the National Weather Service, continues to monitor Tropical Storm Chantal.

FEMA has proactively deployed liaisons to emergency operations centers in Puerto Rico, St. Croix and St. Thomas, to coordinate with local officials, should additional support be requested, or needed. A FEMA Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) has been deployed to the U.S. Virgin Islands, to assist with the coordination of planning and response operations. This team is in addition to the personnel and resources that are located year-round at FEMA’s Caribbean Area Office and Caribbean Area Distribution Center located in Puerto Rico.

According to the National Weather Service, a tropical warning is in effect for the coastal waters of Puerto Rico and a tropical watch has been issued for the U.S. Virgin Islands. A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 36 hours somewhere within the specified areas. Tropical storms often bring strong winds, storm surge accompanied by dangerous waves, significant rainfall and the risk for flash flooding in many areas.

“Residents in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands should closely monitor the storm and take steps now to be as prepared as possible,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. “Stay away from flood waters, never drive through flooded roadways and follow the direction of commonwealth and territory officials.”

Residents or visitors in Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands:

Listen to the instructions of local officials. Local officials make decisions on sheltering in place or going to your pre-designated safe meeting location.

Have important supplies ready to sustain you and your family, if needed. This includes water, a battery-powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, cell phone charger, medicines, non-perishable food, and first aid supplies.

Stay up-to-date with the latest forecast. Follow local radio and TV reports, as well as forecasts from the National Hurricane Center.

FEMA encourages the public to remain vigilant, to continue monitoring Tropical Storm Chantal and to use this opportunity to reassess their readiness for the 2013 hurricane season. For more information on preparing for hurricanes and other natural disasters, and what you can do to protect yourself and your family, visit www.Ready.gov or www.listo.gov on the Internet. Information regarding emergency preparedness and what to do before and after a disaster can also be found at m.fema.gov or by downloading the FEMA app from your smartphone’s app store.
