TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For many Floridians who need help recovering from Hurricane Matthew, registering with FEMA and completing a disaster loan application from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are essential.

To be considered for all forms of disaster assistance, survivors should first register for assistance with FEMA, in any of the following ways:

  • Online at disasterassistance.gov;
  • On the FEMA Mobile App;
  • Call FEMA at 800-621-3362 (voice, 711/VRS-Video Relay Service) (TTY: 800-462-7585). Multilingual operators are available (for Spanish, press 2);
  • At a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC). To find the nearest one, go online to the DRC locator at asd.fema.gov/inter/locator. SBA representatives at all Disaster Recovery Centers will help individuals complete and submit loan applications and answer any questions.

Second to insurance, SBA low-interest disaster loans are the primary source of financial assistance to rebuild disaster-damaged private property for homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private nonprofit organizations. A completed SBA loan application is also an important step in order to qualify for other state and FEMA grants that cover personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, moving and storage expenses and other help.

SBA loans are low-interest, and long-term. In some cases, SBA can refinance all or part of an existing mortgage. SBA loan officers work to come up with a plan that fits a survivor’s budget.

Businesses and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster.  Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.

Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for $40,000 to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed personal property. If SBA does not offer a homeowner or renter a loan, they are referred to FEMA for possible additional grant consideration.

The SBA disaster declaration covers the counties of Brevard, Duval, Flagler, Indian River, Nassau Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns and Volusia, which are eligible for both Physical and Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the SBA. Small businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in the following adjacent counties are eligible to apply only for SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Lake, Marion, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola and St. Lucie.

The SBA has opened Business Recovery Centers (BRC) in St. Johns and Volusia counties to help Florida businesses impacted by Hurricane Matthew:

  • St. Johns County: St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce, 1 News Place, Suite C, St. Augustine, FL 32086

Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Volusia County: Florida Department of Health-Volusia County, 1845 Holsonback Dr., Daytona Beach, FL 32117

Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers in Baldwin County and Mobile County will become SBA Disaster Loan Outreach Centers at the same locations beginning Friday, June 13, at 9 a.m.

Recovery Centers in Baldwin County and Mobile to become SBA Disaster Loan Centers June 13

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The FEMA Recovery Center at the Maurice C. West Community Center in Graysville in Jefferson County will become an SBA Disaster Loan Outreach Center at the Graysville Public Library, Saturday, June 14 at 9 a.m.

DENVER – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has now approved more than $42 million in disaster loans to Colorado homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private, nonprofit organizations.

Approved loan totals in some of the most impacted areas are currently over $27 million in Boulder County, $4.9 million in Larimer County and $6 million in Weld County.

The more than $42 million approved so far to survivors with losses from Colorado storms, flooding, landslides and mudslides breaks down this way:

  • $37.5 million in loans to repair and rebuild homes
  • $4.8 million in business and economic injury loans

Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) are available to small businesses having difficulty meeting obligations as a result of the September severe weather and floods, as well as private nonprofits, even if property was not physically damaged.

Deferred Disaster Loan Payments

The first payment for a disaster loan is due on the fifth month from the date of the loan closing.

The deadline to apply for a SBA disaster loan is November 14, 2013 for physical damage and June 16, 2014 for Economic Injury Disaster Loans.

SBA’s Colorado Disaster Loans Pass $42 million

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Disaster assistance applicants referred to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) who do not complete and submit the companion SBA disaster assistance loan application may be jeopardizing eligibility for other types of assistance.

In addition to businesses, homeowners, renters, and private, nonprofit organizations may be eligible for low interest home repair loans. The loans can be used to cover the costs of repair or replacement of damaged real estate, personal property and business assets not covered by insurance or other aid.

It’s essential for everyone in the Regional Educational Attendance Areas (REAAs) of Alaska Gateway, Lower Yukon, Yukon Flats, and Yukon-Koyukuk with damage from the 2013 Spring Flood to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and, if referred, apply for the SBA disaster loan. Small businesses and private, non-profit organizations in contiguous REAAs are eligible to apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans.

Here are some important facts about the SBA loan application:

  • August 26, 2013, is the last day you can register with FEMA and apply for an SBA disaster loan for physical damage.
  • March 25, 2014, is the last day a business or private, non-profit organization may apply for an Economic Injury Disaster Loan.
  • You don’t have to accept the loan if you qualify for one.
  • If you don’t qualify, you could be eligible for more assistance from FEMA and other organizations.
  • You don’t have to apply for the SBA disaster loan to qualify for FEMA awards for disaster related medical, dental, and funeral expenses.
  • SBA personnel will help you fill out the disaster loan application for free!
  • Complete the SBA application and return it as soon as possible.

NEW YORK – Survivors may not know about disaster help from the U.S. Small Business Administration that could lead to a smarter, faster recovery for businesses, homeowners or private nonprofits. There’s a loan for lost business caused by Hurricane Sandy. There’s also a loan available to a homeowner association to have a common area fixed, and there’s good news about when the first payment on any disaster loan is due. 

Economic Injury Disaster Loan

SBA offers a working capital loan to relieve the economic injury caused by the disaster.

A disaster loan is available to eligible businesses as well as private nonprofits even if property was not damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

These loans are for small businesses, agricultural cooperatives and certain private, nonprofit organizations to cover unpaid bills and lost business due to the disaster. Economic injury loans are also given in amounts up to $2 million, but the total of both physical damage and economic injury loans cannot exceed $2 million.

There are 17 New York counties eligible for Economic Injury Disaster Loans. The first 13 counties are those designated by the presidential disaster declaration for FEMA Individual Assistance. Those counties are Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester.

Four other counties are eligible because each shares a border with one of the 13 disaster-designated counties. These additional counties eligible for an Economic Injury Disaster Loan are Columbia, Delaware, Duchess and Greene counties.

Common Area Disaster Loans for Associations

SBA loans up to $2 million are also available to Homeowner Associations, Planned Unit Developments and similar common-interest developments. Individuals may not borrow money to repair common areas that are the responsibility of the association.

Deferred Disaster Loan Payments

The first payment for a disaster loan is due five months from the date of the SBA Note.

The deadline to apply for an SBA disaster loan is Feb. 27, 2013 for physical damage and July 31, 2013 for Economic Injury Disaster loans.
