FEMA Awards $2,784,000 Grant to Village of Glenview: Hazard Mitigation funds will be used to make stormwater management improvements

CHICAGO – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released $2,784,000 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to the Village of Glenview, Ill., for stormwater management system improvements. The project includes the installation of 3,160 linear feet of new storm sewers and one new storm water detention basin. These stormwater improvements will help reduce the impacts of heavy rain and flooding in the village.

“The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program enables communities to implement critical mitigation measures to reduce the risk of loss of life and property,” said Andrew Velasquez III, regional administrator, FEMA Region V. “The implementation of this project will reduce flood damage to nearby homes and lessen the financial impact on individuals and the community when future flooding occurs in this area.”

“Approval of this grant is good news for the Village of Glenview and its residents who have been affected by flooding many times in the past,” said Jonathon Monken, director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. “This project will improve stormwater retention in the community, which will go a long way toward preventing flooding during heavy rainstorms in the future.”

HMGP provides grants to state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures. Through HMGP, FEMA will pay 75 percent of the $3,712,000 eligible project cost. The remaining 25 percent of the funds, $928,000 will be provided by Glenview.

Crisis Counseling Available to Massac, Tazewell County Tornado Survivors

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – While Massac and Tazewell county residents are working to recover following the Nov. 17 tornadoes, many of them also need to recover emotionally.

Free help is available for tornado survivors who feel mentally overwhelmed, exhausted or unable to cope.

The Illinois Strong Crisis Counselor Program is a FEMA funded initiative that provides emotional support, recovery education, recovery resource information and coping tips for Massac and Tazewell county survivors.

Services provided in this partnership include a toll-free hotline telephone number during these critical times.

Survivors in Massac and Tazewell counties who are emotionally affected shouldn’t hesitate to call crisis counseling representatives at 800-985-5990 or TTY 800-846-8517 for help. The number operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until further notice.

Nov. 17 tornado survivors may overlook the signs of emotional stress while they work to rebuild their lives. While individuals respond to stress in different ways, emotional distress following disasters can make the recovery process more difficult.

FEMA Disaster Assistance is Available for Illinois Tornado Survivors but Deadline to Register Less Than a Week Away

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Nov. 17 tornado survivors have less than a week to register for federal disaster assistance.

Survivors must register by Monday, Jan. 27, to be considered for FEMA grants and SBA low-interest disaster loans to help cover eligible disaster-related expenses, including:

  • Temporary housing for homeowners and renters;
  • Home repairs and rebuilding;
  • Repair or replacement of lost personal property, including vehicles; and
  • Other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other assistance programs.

No FEMA applications can be accepted after the deadline, but FEMA will continue to approve disaster assistance for eligible survivors who applied. To date, more than $14.8 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved FEMA and SBA for homeowners, renters and businesses in Illinois.

Registration is quick and easy:

  • Register by calling the FEMA helpline: 800-621-FEMA (3362). Survivors who use TTY may call 800-462-7585;
  • Register online at DisasterAssistance.gov; or
  • Register with a tablet or smartphone by downloading the FEMA app or going to m.FEMA.gov.

SBA low-interest disaster loans are a major source of federal rebuilding funds.

Homeowners, renters and businesses can apply online through SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Applicants can get more information by calling SBA’s hotline at 800-659-2955 (TTY 800-877-8339 or by visiting sba.gov.

Survivors with insurance should register and keep FEMA updated.

Applicants who have insurance should register with FEMA and submit their insurance settlement documentation to FEMA once they receive it. Anyone with questions about how to obtain this documentation should contact their insurance agent or call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362.  

If applicants think their insurance company may be delaying a settlement, they should contact the Illinois Department of Insurance with questions or information about filing a complaint against the insurance carrier. The toll free number is 866-445-5364. For more information, consumers may also visit the department’s website at Insurance.Illinois.gov. 

The FEMA helpline isn’t just for registration.

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Less than two months after tornadoes swept across Illinois, nearly $12 million in federal disaster assistance from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration has been approved to help survivors recover.

The following is a snapshot of the disaster recovery effort as of Jan. 9:

  • Nearly $9.8 million in low-interest disaster loans approved by SBA for homeowners and renters.
  • More than $2 million in FEMA grants for temporary rental assistance, home repair costs, and other essential disaster-related needs like medical and dental expenses and replacement of lost personal possessions.
  • 1,181 visits to disaster recovery centers by people affected by the disaster.
  • 603 home inspections completed.
  • 2 disaster recovery centers currently open.

No matter the degree of loss or insurance coverage, survivors are urged to apply for help before the Jan. 27 deadline. They can use any of the following methods:

  1. By phone, call 800-621-FEMA (3362) from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Assistance is available in most languages. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call (TTY) 800-462-7585.
  2. Online at DisasterAssistance.gov.
  3. By tablet or smartphone, use the FEMA app or go to m.fema.gov.

Survivors who register with FEMA and are referred to SBA will be contacted with options on how to apply for a low-interest disaster loan. After being contacted by SBA, survivors should complete and submit an application even if they do not plan to accept a loan. Failure to complete and submit the SBA loan application may stop the FEMA grant process. SBA disaster loans are available with interest rates as low as 2.25 percent and terms up to 30 years.

New Recovery Center Hours Begin Dec. 30

Many Forms of Disaster Assistance Available

Springfield, Ill.— While the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Small Business Administration (SBA) may provide valuable grants and loans to disaster survivors for repairing or replacing lost property, disaster assistance may be available through other sources.

The following are valuable resources for survivors of the Nov. 17 tornadoes in Champaign, Douglas, Fayette, Grundy, Jasper, LaSalle, Massac, Pope, Tazewell, Vermilion, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, Will and Woodford counties to receive help their recovery.

  • Survivors can apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Help may be available for Illinois workers, including business owners, who lost employment as a result of the Nov. 17 tornadoes. Applications are available at Illinois Department of Employment Security offices. Survivors can locate their nearest office by calling 800-244-5631 or online at ides.illinois.gov/myoffice. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.
  • Survivors can get free legal help. Low-income survivors facing legal issues can call 844-726-8775, extension 256, to request free legal assistance about issues related to their recovery from the tornadoes. 
  • Childcare-related expenses may be available. FEMA may provide eligible applicants with grants to pay for certain disaster-related childcare costs. The assistance costs may be available if a survivor had to move to a different community where child care costs are more expensive or the disaster caused their usual child care facility to close leaving only a more expensive facility available.   • Crisis counseling referrals are available. Crisis counseling is available to those in emotional distress following the tornadoes. Survivors can call 800-985-5990, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Find an available nearby rental property through online resources. Visit Nestrent.com or IlHousingSearch.org. Survivors can also call 800-621-FEMA (3362) for recommendations on available rental properties or to ask questions about temporary rental assistance.

Rantoul Recovery Center to Close Saturday: Holiday Hours for Brookport and East Peoria Centers

Springfield, Ill. — The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced the Rantoul Disaster Recovery Center at the Rantoul Recreation Building at 100 E. Flessner Ave. will close effective Saturday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m.

After that date, survivors of the Nov. 17 Illinois tornadoes can still get information by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362).

Applicants who have not contacted FEMA to apply for assistance can do so online at DisasterAssistance.gov or m.fema.gov for those who use a smartphone or tablet. They can also call FEMA’s helpline at 800-621-3362. Survivors who use TTY can call 800-462-7585. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

Applicants should contact FEMA if they change their mailing address, phone number or e-mail address, if they receive an insurance settlement or discover additional damage. 

Brookport and East Peoria Recovery Centers Closed Sundays

Beginning Sunday, Dec. 22, the Brookport Disaster Recovery Center at the Brookport Library and the East Peoria Disaster Recovery Center at the Festival of Lights will be closed on Sundays. The centers will continue serving their communities from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.                                                                                        

Recovery Center Holiday Hours

Holiday hours for the centers are 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Dec. 24 and 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26. The centers will be closed on Christmas Day.

If Your Home is Uninhabitable, FEMA Rental Assistance May be an Option

Springfield, Ill. – While survivors of the Nov. 17 Illinois tornadoes are making repairs to or rebuilding their homes, assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) may be available to help pay for a warm, clean and safe place to stay during the cold winter months ahead.                                

  • First, file a claim with your homeowner’s insurance company. Talk to your homeowners’ or renters’ insurance agent about additional living expenses (ALE) coverage as part of your policy to assist with relocating to a temporary residence.
  • Register for FEMA assistance. If you’re insured, you will need to submit your settlement documents for review before FEMA can determine your eligibility status. If your policy does not include ALE, or you exhaust this coverage and your home remains uninhabitable, you may be eligible for rental assistance from FEMA.
  • An inspector may arrange a visit to your damaged home or apartment to determine eligible losses. If the inspector determines your home is uninhabitable, you will be offered an option of initial rental assistance to help you relocate. Once exhausted, additional relocation assistance may be available on an as needed basis.
  • Find an available rental property in your area through online resources such as Nestrent.com or IlHousingSearch.org. Survivors can also call 800-621-FEMA (3362) for recommendations on available rental properties, or to ask questions about temporary rental assistance.
