Louisiana Receives More Than $5.5 Million for Repairs Following Hurricane Isaac & 2013 Floods

DENTON, Texas – The state of Louisiana recently received more than $5.5 million for repairs and reimbursements following Hurricane Isaac in 2012 and the flooding of 2013.

Hurricane Isaac caused widespread damage across South Louisiana. The funding made possible by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance program covers repairs to a number of facilities, as well as reimbursement for emergency operations in multiple parishes including:

•    More than $1 million for emergency protective measures utilized in Plaquemines Parish such as sandbagging and evacuation operations and road closures;
•    More than $1.6 million for cost-effective mitigation measures for the roof of the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner in Jefferson Parish, as well as restoration of the center to its pre-disaster design, function and capacity;
•    More than $202,400 for repairs to recreational facilities and parks in Kenner including A.P. Clay Splash Park; Butch Duhe Park; Fassbender Gym; Galatas Park; Greenlawn Park; Highway Park; Laketown Fishing Pier; Lincoln Minor Gym; Muss Bertolino Park; Susan Park; Wentwood Park; Woodlake Park; and Woodward Park;
•    More than $1 million for right-of-way debris and vessel removal, and monitoring services in state waterways for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development; and
•    More than $631,000 for repairs to the Ochsner Baptist Medical Center complex in New Orleans including the Napoleon Building; the McFarland Building; the Magnolia Building; and the Clara Wing.

In the 2013 floods, the Crowley Waste Water Treatment Plant in Acadia Parish was damaged when the retention pond overflowed, shorting out the lighting system, main circuit boards, relay boards and electric boards. The $984,462 in FEMA’s PA funding covers work to the plant’s lagoon, ultra-violet disinfection plant, clean ammonia reduction unit, as well as measures to mitigate against future damage.

To date, FEMA has obligated more than $317.3 million in Public Assistance funding in relation to Hurricane Isaac and more than $4.3 million in relation to the 2013 floods.

The funding represents a 75 percent federal cost share. FEMA awards funding for projects directly to the state of Louisiana; the state then disburses the grant to the eligible applicant.

Flood Insurance Information Number Changes for Louisiana Residents

BATON ROUGE, La. – Louisiana residents who have questions about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) have a permanent helpline to call to get the most up-to-date information.

The number is 1-800-427-4661 for people who need information about the NFIP or want to request loss histories on their properties. Policyholders with questions or concerns about their claims may also speak with NFIP specialists.

The helpline operates from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT. Additional information is available at www.floodsmart.gov.

“This helpline is a valuable resource for Louisianians rebuilding after Hurricane Isaac,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Gerard M. Stolar of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). “Talking one on one with a specialist can help survivors get the information they need to move forward with their recovery.”

Just days after Hurricane Isaac hit the state in late August 2012, FEMA’s joint field office in Louisiana opened a dedicated NFIP helpline for Hurricane Isaac survivors. Effective Friday, that number will no longer be in service.

FEMA Obligates $1.2 Million to St. John Parish School Board for Hurricane Isaac Emergency Measures

BATON ROUGE, La. – The St. John Parish School Board will receive a $1.2 million federal grant to reimburse transportation costs it incurred because of Hurricane Isaac, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said Thursday.

Between Aug. 26 and Sept. 10, Hurricane Isaac produced high winds, rain and flooding throughout the state. Two public schools in St. John Parish sustained flooding serious enough to close their doors temporarily and students from those schools had to be bused to other locations. The FEMA Public Assistance grant, totaling $1,234,063, helps reimburse the school board for those transportation costs.

“The St. John School Board acted quickly to make sure students remained safe and continued their educations after the storm,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Gerard M. Stolar of FEMA. “Reimbursement for those transportation-related expenses supports the schools’ recovery efforts.”

The newly obligated funds are a portion of the $222 million in total Public Assistance recovery dollars approved for the state since the Aug. 29, 2012, disaster declaration.

Once FEMA reimburses the state of Louisiana it is the state’s responsibility to manage the funds, which includes making disbursements to local jurisdictions and organizations that incurred costs.

FEMA Awards $1.5 Million to St. John Parish for Hurricane Isaac Recovery

BATON ROUGE, La. – St. John Parish will receive a $1.5 million federal grant to reimburse the cost of repairing sewer and storm pumps damaged by Hurricane Isaac, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said Wednesday.

Between Aug. 26 and Sept. 10, Hurricane Isaac produced high winds, rain and flooding throughout the state, hitting St. John Parish particularly hard. Sewer and storm pumps at 12 locations in the parish required repair following the hurricane. The $1,501,415 FEMA Public Assistance grant helps reimburse costs for those repairs and provides additional assistance to strengthen the pumps against future damage.

“Slow-moving events like Hurricane Isaac affect the infrastructure people depend on for safety during the storm,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Gerard M. Stolar of FEMA. “This grant helps put St. John Parish a little closer to normal following the storm and places the parish in a better position to withstand the next storm.”

The newly obligated funds are a portion of the nearly $215.6 million in total Public Assistance recovery dollars approved for the state since the Aug. 29, 2012, disaster declaration.
