OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma homeowners, renters and business owners affected by the May 5 through June 22 storms have less than two weeks to register for state and federal disaster assistance.

Homeowners, renters and businesses in 45 counties approved for Individual Assistance have until August 26 to seek assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The designated counties are Adair, Atoka, Beckham, Bryan, Caddo, Canadian, Carter, Cherokee, Choctaw, Cleveland, Coal, Comanche, Cotton, Delaware, Garvin, Grady, Hughes, Jefferson, Johnston, Kiowa, Latimer, Le Flore, Lincoln, Logan, Love, Marshall, Mayes, McClain, McCurtain, McIntosh, Murray, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Okmulgee, Ottawa, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Pushmataha, Rogers, Seminole, Stephens, Tillman, Tulsa and Wagoner.

To date, more than $44.9 million has been provided to Oklahoma disaster survivors. This assistance includes $16.5 million in funding for disaster related housing needs and other disaster related expenses, more than $18.7 in SBA loans, and more than $9.7 million in payments to survivors through the National Flood Insurance Program.

SBA has issued 1,463 applications for low-interest disaster loans to homeowners and businesses. More than $16.9 million has been approved for homeowners, and more than $1.7 million in loans has been approved for business owners rebuilding after the storms.

There have been more than 10,445 total registrations for assistance. There are several ways to register for assistance. Call FEMA toll-free at 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. Or go online to www.DisasterAssistance.gov, using a computer, tablet or smartphone.
Once survivors have registered they may have questions about the process. All questions can be answered either face-to-face at a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) or by calling the FEMA Helpline. There have been 4,329 visitors to mobile and fixed-site DRCs.

FEMA Registration Deadline Now Just a Month Away

NORTH LITTLE ROCK – Residents of nine Arkansas counties who suffered damage from the severe storms of May 7 through June 15, 2015, have only about one month left to register for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The deadline to register for disaster assistance is Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015.

Individuals and families who suffered losses as a result of the late spring storms may register online at www.disasterassistance.gov; those without access to the internet can call FEMA’s toll-free registration number, 800-621-3362 (FEMA). Disaster assistance applicants, who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY, should call 800-462-7585 directly; those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS) call 1-800-621-3362.

The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (local time) seven days a week until further notice. Multilingual operators are available.

Residents of Crawford, Garland, Howard, Jefferson, Little River, Miller, Perry, Sebastian and Sevier counties may be eligible for federal disaster assistance. That assistance can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property loss and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

Disaster Recovery Center to Close in Fort Bend County, Texas, But Help is Still Available

OKLAHOMA CITY – More than $26 million has been granted to Oklahomans, helping to rebuild the lives of families and businesses impacted by the recent storms.

Signs of recovery are becoming visible following the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding occurring May 5 through June 4. Since the May 26 major disaster declaration, state and federal disaster officials say residents continue to seek help.

More than 8,403 families have registered for assistance with the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The total federal disaster funding approved for Oklahomans is $26.6 million. This includes:

  • $12.1 million in Individual Assistance (IA)
    • $10.3 million for Housing Assistance
    • more than $1.7 million for Other Needs, such as repair or replacement of personal property essential to the home.
  • There have been 131 claims paid to Oklahomans through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which total $4,193,945.
  • SBA has approved more than $10,473,100 in loans. This includes:
    • $10,060,700 million for homeowners
    • $412,400 for business owners.

Low-interest SBA disaster loans may be available to businesses of all sizes as well as certain private nonprofit organizations. Homeowners and renters are also eligible for SBA loans for uninsured loss. These loans cannot duplicate benefits from other agencies or compensation from other organizations.

FEMA has had up to 88 Disaster Survivor Assistance specialists going door-to-door in the affected counties. To date, they have visited 16,538 homes, 1,054 businesses, and 717 community-based organizations delivering recovery information and guidance. These specialists have also registered 571 survivors for disaster assistance.

Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are currently open throughout the state where 3,184 visitors have met face-to-face with representatives from OEM, FEMA and SBA.

Oklahoma Disaster Assistance Tops $26 Million

OKLAHOMA CITY – As clean-up continues for homes, farms and businesses damaged by the May 5 through June 4 severe storms, flooding, straight-line winds, and tornadoes, Oklahomans should take special care when collecting and disposing of household hazardous wastes.  

Homeowners and renters affected by the disaster should, whenever feasible, separate hazardous household waste from other debris before disposal. Among the items that fall into the household hazardous waste category are paints and solvents, cleaning materials, batteries, oils and petroleum products, pesticides, explosives, swimming pool chemicals and pressurized gas cylinders. 

After separating out household hazardous waste, take the waste (or arrange for it to be taken) to a facility that accepts toxic materials. To find a facility that accepts household hazardous waste in your area, contact a local Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) office. A list of DEQ offices is available at www.deq.state.ok.us/eclsnew/localOffices.htm.

Improper disposal of household hazardous waste includes pouring it down the drain, on the ground, into storm drains/sewers, or in some cases putting it out with the trash. The dangers of such disposal methods might not be immediately obvious. Certain types of household hazardous waste have the potential to cause physical injury to sanitation workers, contaminate septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems, and pose health hazards to both humans and animals. 

Oil-contaminated debris or material tainted by other petroleum products should be segregated and stored in a well-ventilated area. If stored outdoors, household hazardous materials should be covered to keep precipitation from contaminating nearby soil and water.

For discarding all types of waste, the preferred option is disposal at a DEQ-permitted landfill. Contact a local DEQ office for the location of the nearest emergency disposal sites for storm debris. In addition to disposing of household hazardous wastes, it’s also important for residents to clean and disinfect everything touched by floodwaters as quickly as possible. That’s because floodwaters and their sediments may contain chemical and biological contaminants from sources as varied as garden chemicals, heating oil and sewage. 

Residents should assume that anything touched by floodwater is contaminated and should be cleaned, disinfected or thrown away. Discard any household goods – such as wall coverings, rugs and furniture – that may be contaminated with mold and other toxins and can’t be disinfected. When in doubt, throw it out.

Businesses that may have been impacted by the storms of May 5 through June 4 and have questions about proper disposal of hazardous waste should contact a local DEQ office.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Flood Insurance Program call center is staffed with specialists who can assist Texas policyholders with servicing their claims, providing general information regarding their policies, and offering technical assistance to aid in recovery.

To speak with a flood insurance specialist, call 800-621-3362 between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (CDT) Monday through Friday.

Call center staff are available to answer questions, such as “How do I file a flood insurance claim? What type of documentation is needed? Can I still obtain disaster assistance even though I have a flood policy?” Staff can also answer more complicated insurance questions about the extent of coverage and policy ratings. The call center serves disaster survivors who have general questions about the National Flood Insurance Program.

For Texans who prefer to put their concerns in writing, a “Request for Support” form is posted at www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program, which can be filled out and emailed to FEMA-NFIP-Support@fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 540-504-2360.

The SBA is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps businesses of all sizes, private non-profit organizations, homeowners and renters fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations. FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for childcare, medical, dental expenses and/or funeral expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, those who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, transportation, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
