Those who have not yet registered can do so by visiting www.DisasterAssistance.gov.

They may also access many of the services available at centers by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585. Those who use 711/Video Relay Services (VRS) can call 800-621-3362. Lines are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

Survivors may use the helpline to stay informed. They can:

  •  Ask questions about FEMA determination letters.
  •  Learn how to appeal FEMA determination letters. All applicants may appeal.
  •  Inquire about the status of a registration.
  •  Provide change of address, telephone and bank account numbers and insurance information to avoid disaster assistance processing delays.
  •  Receive information about FEMA home inspections.
  •  Get other questions answered about federal disaster assistance.

Help Remains for Hermine Disaster Survivors after Disaster Recovery Centers Close in Citrus, Dixie, Hernando and Leon Counties

SEATTLE – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Akawana fire burning in Jefferson County, Oregon.

FEMA Region X Deputy Regional Administrator Sharon Loper determined that the fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. Loper approved the state of Oregon’s request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) at 8:44 p.m. PDT on June 8, 2016.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 1,000 homes in and around the Grandview, Forest Park, and Three Rivers communities, total estimated population 3,000.  Approximately 250 of the threatened homes are primary residences and 750 are secondary homes.  The fire was also threatening campsites, the Lake Billy Chinook State Airport, Native American archeological sites, and two state parks in the area.  Mandatory evacuations were issued for approximately 3,000 people.  The fire started on June 7, 2016, and had burned in excess of 2,500 acres of private land.  There were four other large fires burning uncontrolled within the state.  The Principal Advisor confirmed the threat.  The fire was zero percent contained at the time of approval.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Oregon’s eligible firefighting costs for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

FMAGs are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; mobilization and demobilization activities; and tools, materials and supplies.

DENTON, Texas — Emergency management agencies in five states – Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas – have been awarded more than $1.6 million in preparedness grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

In Arkansas, the grants total $149,515 and cover:

• Stretchers, backboards and splints for the El Dorado Fire Department;
• Firefighting equipment for the Grubbs Volunteer Fire Department and the Oden-Pencil Bluff Volunteer Fire Department; and
• Generators, radios and other tools for the Maddox Bay Rural Fire Department in Holly Grove.

The grants in Louisiana total $509,022 and pay for firefighting equipment for the Forest Volunteer Fire Department in Oak Grove; the Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department; the Des Allemands Volunteer Fire Department; the Bayou Boeuf Volunteer Fire Department in Thibodaux; the St. Landry Fire District #7 in Morrow and the Washington Parish Fire District #7.

In New Mexico, grants totaling $120,016 cover firefighting equipment for the Ohkay Owingeh Fire Department and the Newkirk Fire Department in Santa Rosa, and health screenings and physicals for the Santa Fe Fire Department.

The Oklahoma grants total $637,349 and pay for:

• A pumper/engine vehicle for the Madill Fire Department;
• A tanker vehicle for the Warner Volunteer Fire Department;
• Firefighting equipment for the city of Ada Fire Department;
• Communications equipment for the William Key Correctional Center Fire Department; and
• A training tower for the State Fire Training Academy at Oklahoma State University.

In Texas, the grants total $202,778 and pay for firefighting equipment for the Tennessee Colony Volunteer Fire Department, the Blossom Fire Department and the Balcones Heights Fire Department in San Antonio.

The federal grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. The primary goal of the AFG is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders get critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas Receive More Than $1.6 Million in FEMA Preparedness Grants

CHICAGO – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released $69,632 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to the city of Forest Lake Minn., for the construction of a safe room at John Jergens Estates.

“The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program enables communities to implement critical mitigation measures to reduce or eliminate the risk of loss of life and property,” said Andrew Velasquez III, regional administrator, FEMA Region V. “The construction of thissafe room will protect the lives of vulnerable citizens by providing a secure location to seek shelter from tornados and other high wind events.”

“People in Forest Lake will be safer thanks to local leaders who joined with state and federal partners on this project,” said Kris Eide, director of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. “Tornado safe rooms are one way communities across the state are reducing the risk that comes with disasters. We’re encouraging more cities and counties to apply for grants that will help them protect their residents.”

HMGP provides grants to state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures. Through HMGP, FEMAwill pay $69,632, or 75 percent of the eligible project cost. The city of Forest Lake will contribute the remaining 25 percent, or $23,210.

New Hours of Operation for FEMA/State DRCs

AURORA, Ill. – The eight Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) operated by the state of Illinois and FEMA have changed their schedule of operations.

They will now be open from Monday through Saturday, rather than seven days a week.  The DRCs will be closed Sundays. Hours of operation remain 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

CHICAGO, IL A federal/state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open at 9 a.m. Saturday,
May 18, in Forest View for residents of Cook County to meet face-to-face with disaster recovery specialists, officials said today.

Disaster Recovery Center Opens in Cook County

FEMA Corps team Gold 4 joined forces, Saturday, April 20, 2013 with Seattle Emergency Management, Earth Corps and the Nature Consortium at Pigeon Point Park to celebrate Duwamish Alive!

FEMA Corps answered questions about emergency preparedness and gave out information on everything from disaster kits to the risks inherent in the Pacific Northwest. They also gave information on how to reduce these risks. FEMA Corps helped spread information on simple steps for personal, family, and pet preparedness.

“We want to incorporate disaster preparedness into what people and organizations are already doing on a daily basis,” said Caitlyn Ripetto, a FEMA Corp team member who organized the project. “The work FEMA Corps is doing is part of a much larger effort that communities in Washington are actively undertaking to prepare for disaster by strengthening community ties, preparing families and businesses”.

FEMA Corps is a new partnership between AmeriCorps NCCC and FEMA that aims to provide communities with disaster preparedness and relief assistance. The Gold 4 team is made up of ten 18-24 year olds from around the country who are working with FEMA Region X External Affairs for two months.

The team will also have booths at two events on Saturday, April 27, 2013. One is the Golden Gardens Park Clean-up and the other is Urban Forest Restoration at Pigeon Point Park.

FEMA Corps Team Gold 4 Helps Seattle Residents Prepare For Disaster

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to Pennsylvania to supplement the commonwealth and local recovery efforts in the area affected by Hurricane Sandy during the period of Oct. 26 to Nov. 8, 2012.

The President’s action makes federal funding available to the commonwealth and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Hurricane Sandy in Bedford, Bucks, Cameron, Dauphin, Forest, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Potter, Somerset, Sullivan, and Wyoming counties. 

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Thomas J. McCool has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.  McCool said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the commonwealth and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
