AUSTIN, Texas – Recovery specialists have some sound advice for Texans whose homes and property took on floodwaters: Protect your family’s health and your own by treating or discarding mold- and mildew-infected items.

Health experts urge those who find mold to act fast. Cleaning mold quickly and properly is essential for a healthy home, especially for people who suffer from allergies and asthma, said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Mold and mildew can start growing within 24 hours after a flood, and can lurk throughout a home, from the attic to the basement and crawl spaces. The best defense is to clean, dry or, as a last resort, discard moldy items.

Although it can be hard to get rid of a favorite chair, a child’s doll or any other precious treasure to safeguard the well-being of your loved ones, a top-to-bottom home cleanup is your best defense, according to the experts.

Many materials are prone to developing mold if they remain damp or wet for too long. Start a post-flood cleanup by sorting all items exposed to floodwaters:

  • Wood and upholstered furniture, and other porous materials can trap mold and may need to be discarded.
  • Carpeting presents a problem because drying it does not remove mold spores. Carpets with mold and mildew should be removed.
  • However, glass, plastic and metal objects and other items made of hardened or nonporous materials can often be cleaned, disinfected and reused.

All flood-dampened surfaces should be cleaned, disinfected and dried as soon as possible. Follow these tips to ensure a safe and effective cleanup:

  • Open windows for ventilation and wear rubber gloves and eye protection when cleaning. Consider using a mask rated N-95 or higher if heavy concentrations of mold are present.
  • Use a non-ammonia soap or detergent to clean all areas and washable items that came in contact with floodwaters.
  • Mix 1-1/2 cups of household bleach in one gallon of water and thoroughly rinse and disinfect the area. Never mix bleach with ammonia as the fumes are toxic.
  • Cleaned areas can take several days to dry thoroughly. The use of heat, fans and dehumidifiers can speed up the drying process.
  • Check out all odors. It’s possible for mold to hide in the walls or behind wall coverings. Find all mold sources and clean them properly.
  • Remove and discard all materials that can’t be cleaned, such as wallboard, fiberglass and cellulose areas. Then clean the wall studs where wallboard has been removed, and allow the area to dry thoroughly before replacing the wallboard.

Preventing Post-Flooding Mold at Home: Clean It, Dry It or Discard It

DENTON, Texas – The state of New Mexico has been awarded more than $1 million for debris removal in the aftermath of severe storms and flooding in Sept. 2014.

The heavy rains and flooding in 2014 flowed into arroyos, acequais, the Rio Nambe River and the Pojoaque River just north of Santa Fe. This caused more than 17,000 cubic yards of sedimentary debris to be deposited into the Nambe Falls Reservoir. The reservoir provides water for nearby municipalities and also for irrigation purposes.

The funding, which is made possible by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance program, covers the removal, hauling away and proper disposal of the debris.

To date, FEMA has obligated more than $2.6 million for recovery efforts from the Sept. 2014 severe storms and flooding.

The funding represents a 75 percent federal cost share. FEMA awards funding for projects directly to the state of New Mexico; the state then disburses the grant to the eligible applicant.

New Mexico Awarded More than $1 Million in Federal Disaster Assistance Following the Sept. 2014 Flooding

DENTON, Texas – The state of New Mexico has been awarded nearly $2.5 million in federal disaster assistance in the aftermath of the Tres Lagunas Fire that happened in late May, early June 2013.

The funding, which is made possible by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Fire Management Assistance Grant Program, serves as reimbursement for firefighting costs incurred while fighting the fire.
In 2013, the Tres Lagunas Fire threatened hundreds of homes, as well as roads and bridges, and burned thousands of acres of land in San Miguel County.

The Fire Management Assistance Grant Program provides a 75 percent federal cost share, with the state paying the remaining 25 percent for actual costs.

Before a grant can be awarded, the state must demonstrate that total eligible costs for the declared fire meet or exceed either the individual fire cost threshold – which is applied to single fires, or the cumulative fire cost threshold, which recognizes smaller fires burning throughout a state.
Eligible firefighting costs may include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.

New Mexico Receives Nearly $2.5 Million in Federal Disaster Assistance for the Tres Lagunas Fire

WARREN, Mich. – The holiday season is here, and the state of Michigan and FEMA wish you all the best during this special time of the year.  The heavy demands of the holiday season can be a busy time for all. Managing family obligations and handling seasonal preparations along with regular day-to-day activities can make disaster awareness and preparedness less of a priority.

Officials want to remind you that the holidays can also bring out scam artists and other criminals who want to prey on vulnerable survivors. The most common types of fraud after disaster strikes are contractor fraud and price gouging.

  • Be wary of contractors who solicit work door-to-door or who promise –“I’ll do it right away and cheap.”
  • Get estimates from more than one licensed, bonded, and reputable contractor.
  • Get a contract in writing.
  • Don’t make final payment until the job is finished.
  • Don’t sign over an insurance settlement check to a contractor.

Gift giving is also on the minds of many this time of year. We would like to offer some gift suggestions for those family members who might not be prepared for disasters or emergencies. While these may not be the fanciest gifts to give, they may save a life, protect property or make dealing with a disaster a little easier.

  • NOAA weather radios and extra batteries.
  • A home disaster kit that could include items such as a flashlight and batteries, a battery-powered radio, a first aid kit, bottled water, and canned goods with a manual can opener. Place the items in a plastic tub or backpack.
  • Car emergency kits such as flares, a shovel, an ice scraper, flashlight and fluorescent distress flags.
  • Pet disaster kit that could include extra food, a leash, food dish, pet toys that would fit in a bag or backpack.

Give the Gift of Awareness and Preparedness This Holiday Season

SANTA FE – Getting disaster aid quickly into the hands of eligible applicants affected by September 15-26 flooding in New Mexico starts with the first stepinforming state and federal recovery officials that Public Assistance funding is needed.

State agencies, tribal governments, certain nonprofit organizations, community ditch associations and other local government entities in Colfax, Eddy, Lincoln, Lea, Otero, Santa Fe and Sierra counties affected by the September floods have until November 28 to submit the appropriate forms to the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (NM DHSEM).

Federal grants are reimbursed to eligible applicants for emergency protective measures, debris removal, and the repairing of public infrastructure, including roads, bridges and public utilities. Nov 28 is Deadline for Eligible Entities to Request Public Assistance Funding for Sept Flooding

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — At the request of the state of Illinois, Nov. 17 tornado survivors now have until Monday, Feb. 3 to apply to FEMA for disaster assistance.

Registering is easy and usually takes no more than 20 minutes. There are three ways survivors can apply for assistance from FEMA:

  • Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov.
  • Visit m.fema.gov from a smartphone or tablet.
  • Dial 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585. The toll-free numbers are operated from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

FEMA grants can help to cover eligible disaster-related expenses, including:

  • Temporary housing for homeowners and renters;

FEMA Extends Disaster Assistance Deadline for Illinois Tornado Survivors: FEMA says let us know you need help

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – While Massac and Tazewell county residents are working to recover following the Nov. 17 tornadoes, many of them also need to recover emotionally.

Free help is available for tornado survivors who feel mentally overwhelmed, exhausted or unable to cope.

The Illinois Strong Crisis Counselor Program is a FEMA funded initiative that provides emotional support, recovery education, recovery resource information and coping tips for Massac and Tazewell county survivors.

Services provided in this partnership include a toll-free hotline telephone number during these critical times.

Survivors in Massac and Tazewell counties who are emotionally affected shouldn’t hesitate to call crisis counseling representatives at 800-985-5990 or TTY 800-846-8517 for help. The number operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until further notice.

Nov. 17 tornado survivors may overlook the signs of emotional stress while they work to rebuild their lives. While individuals respond to stress in different ways, emotional distress following disasters can make the recovery process more difficult.

Crisis Counseling Available to Massac, Tazewell County Tornado Survivors

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois tornado survivors have until 6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, to visit the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at the Brookport Library on U.S. Hwy. 45 in Brookport.  

After that date, survivors of the Nov. 17 Illinois tornadoes can still get help by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362). Survivors who use TTY can call 800-462-7585. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Survivors can also call the helpline to register with FEMA before the Jan. 27 registration deadline. Other ways to register include online at DisasterAssistance.gov or with a smartphone or tablet by downloading the FEMA app or going to m.FEMA.gov. Survivors must register before the deadline to be eligible for possible grants and SBA low-interest disaster loans for temporary rental assistance, home repair and rebuilding, replacement of lost personal items, and other disaster-related expenses. Assistance will continue after Jan. 27, but applicants must register by that date to be considered.

Applicants should contact FEMA by calling the helpline if they have any questions or if they change their mailing address, phone number or email address, receive an insurance settlement or discover additional damage.

CHICAGO – With an ominous mid-week forecast that includes severe storms, heavy rains, strong winds and the potential for tornadoes, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region V encourages everyone to get prepared.

“Severe weather can strike with little or no warning. The threat of severe weather requires everyone to get prepared now,” FEMA Region V Administrator Andrew Velasquez III said. “Knowing what to do before the storm will help keep you and your family safe.”

Follow the instructions of state and local officials and listen to local radio or TV stations for updated emergency information. If a warning is issued, get indoors, and move to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls.
