DENTON, Texas — Fire departments in Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico have been awarded more than $2.4 million in preparedness grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

In Arkansas, the grants total $413,524 and cover firefighting equipment for the Lake Village Fire Department and the Lone Rock Volunteer Fire Department in Norfork.

In Louisiana, the grants total more than $1.8 million and pay for:

•    Firefighting equipment for the Church Point Volunteer Fire Department, the Forest Volunteer Fire Department in Oak Grove, the Plaucheville Volunteer Fire Department and the West Baton Rouge Fire District 1 in Port Allen; and
•    The hiring of 17 firefighters because of attrition for the Shreveport Fire Department.

The grant in New Mexico totals $169,000 and pays for tuition and educational assistance plus several other programs for the Mayhill Volunteer Fire Department.

The federal grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants program. SAFER awards provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase the number of trained, front line firefighters available in their communities. SEATTLE – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Cape Horn Fire, burning in Bonner County and Kootenai County, Idaho.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator, Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the Cape Horn Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. Murphy approved the state’s request for federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) on July 6, 2015 at 12:44 a.m. PDT. This is the first FMAG approved in Idaho this fire season.

The fire started on July 5, 2015, and had burned approximately 1,200 acres of federal, state and private land. At the time of the request, 6 homes had been destroyed and the fire was threatening 281 homes in the community of Bayview and to the east in the Cape Horn area. Approximately 300 people have evacuated the area. Sheltering operations are ongoing in a local school. The fire is burning in a high use recreation area on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. The fire threatens a high value marina, the Naval Acoustics Research Station and the heavily used Farragut State Park.  

Firefighting resources onsite include 8 air-tankers, 3 helicopters and 8 engines. A Type II Management Team will arrive Monday afternoon. The fire is at approximately 0 percent containment. There are 11 uncontrolled fires within the state.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Idaho’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

Fire Management Assistance Grants are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; mobilization and demobilization activities; and tools, materials and supplies.

FEMA provides federal funds to help fight Cape Horn Fire

DENTON, Texas — Emergency management agencies in five states – Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas – have been awarded more than $1.6 million in preparedness grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

In Arkansas, the grants total $149,515 and cover:

• Stretchers, backboards and splints for the El Dorado Fire Department;
• Firefighting equipment for the Grubbs Volunteer Fire Department and the Oden-Pencil Bluff Volunteer Fire Department; and
• Generators, radios and other tools for the Maddox Bay Rural Fire Department in Holly Grove.

The grants in Louisiana total $509,022 and pay for firefighting equipment for the Forest Volunteer Fire Department in Oak Grove; the Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department; the Des Allemands Volunteer Fire Department; the Bayou Boeuf Volunteer Fire Department in Thibodaux; the St. Landry Fire District #7 in Morrow and the Washington Parish Fire District #7.

In New Mexico, grants totaling $120,016 cover firefighting equipment for the Ohkay Owingeh Fire Department and the Newkirk Fire Department in Santa Rosa, and health screenings and physicals for the Santa Fe Fire Department.

The Oklahoma grants total $637,349 and pay for:

• A pumper/engine vehicle for the Madill Fire Department;
• A tanker vehicle for the Warner Volunteer Fire Department;
• Firefighting equipment for the city of Ada Fire Department;
• Communications equipment for the William Key Correctional Center Fire Department; and
• A training tower for the State Fire Training Academy at Oklahoma State University.

In Texas, the grants total $202,778 and pay for firefighting equipment for the Tennessee Colony Volunteer Fire Department, the Blossom Fire Department and the Balcones Heights Fire Department in San Antonio.

The federal grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. The primary goal of the AFG is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations. In Louisiana, the grants total more than $1.1 million and pay for firefighting equipment for the Oakdale Fire Department and the Melville Volunteer Fire Department; health screenings and fitness equipment for the Ruston Fire Department; communications equipment for the Spearsville Fire Protection District LA; and two vehicles — a pumper vehicle and a water tender vehicle — for St. Tammany Parish Fire District 9 in Bush.

Arkansas and Louisiana Receive Nearly $2.5 Million in FEMA Preparedness Grants

DENTON, Texas — The University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center at Houston has received nearly $1.5 million in preparedness funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to address the health of volunteer firefighters.

The UT Health Science Center at Houston will use the FEMA Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant to assess the effectiveness of an internet-based firefighter health and wellness program for volunteer fire departments. A national sample of volunteer fire departments will be recruited for a six-month-long study that will focus on nutrition and fitness for the firefighters. Modifications will be made to the program based on the study findings.
 
“Volunteer firefighters are integral to the firefighting profession and to the communities they support,” said FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson. “We are proud to be a part of this important effort to boost their health and well-being.”

FP&S grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. These grants support projects that enhance the safety of the public and protect firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal is to reduce injury and prevent death among high-risk populations. FEMA provides federal funds to help fight Hansel Fire

Seattle, WA – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Hansel Fire, burning in Chelan County, Washington.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator, Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the Hansel Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster.  Murphy approved the state’s request for federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) on August 5, 2014 at 9:22 p.m. PDT.

On August 5, 2014, the State of Washington submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Hansel Fire, burning in Chelan County.  At the time of the request, 220 homes were threatened and about 720 people had evacuated the area.  The fire started on August 2, 2014, and at least 10 fires are burning uncontrolled in Chelan Count. The Hansel Fire has consumed approximately 1,500 acres of Federal and private land and is being fueled by heavy timber. Firefighting resources from local, State, and Federal, and out of state are fighting the fire, include strike teams , type 2 IA crews, air resources, tenders and  an Incident Management Team   to support fire suppression activity. The Federal Principal Advisor confirmed the threat to homes, dams, overhead power lines, and rail line.  The fire is currently uncontained.

A state of emergency was declared by the Governor late Tuesday, July 14 in 20 Eastern Washington counties in response to multiple wildfires threatening homes, businesses, public infrastructure, and natural resources in many parts of the state as fire crews face continued severe fire weather conditions.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of Washington State’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

Fire Management Assistance Grants are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Federal funds authorized to help fight Oregon Gulch Fire

Seattle, WA – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Oregon Gulch Fire, burning in Jackson and Klamath Counties, Oregon.  

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator, Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the Oregon Gulch Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster.  Murphy approved the state’s request for federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) on August 1, 2014 at 6:43 p.m. PDT.

On August 1, 2014, the State of Oregon submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Oregon Gulch Fire, burning in Jackson and Klamath Counties. At the time of the request, 123 homes were threatened and about 40 people had evacuated the area. Two major power transmission lines from a hydroelectric facility had been destroyed and a third transmission line was threatened. The fire was also threatening the municipal watershed area, the Pinehurst municipal airport and an elementary school.  The fire started on July 31, 2014, and has fire has burned approximately 11,000 acres of Federal and private land.  The Firefighting resources committed to the incident include fire crews, structural engines, helicopters, air tankers,  dozers and two teams of National Guard forces. Federal Principal Advisor confirmed the threat to homes and power transmission lines.  The fire is at zero percent containment.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator, Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the Watermelon Hill Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster.  Murphy approved the state’s request for federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) on July 19, 2014 at 11:14 p.m. PDT.

On July 19, 2014, the State of Washington submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Watermelon Hill Fire, burning in the Counties of Lincoln and Spokane.  At the time of the request, 200 primary homes were threatened and approximately 300 people had evacuated the area.  At the time of the request the fire threatened;  a major BNSF/UP rail line, overhead power lines, Eastern Washington University, the Cheney Medical Center Community Hospital and the Turnville Wild life Preserve.  The fire started on July 19, 2014, and has burned approximately 5,000-7,000 acres of Federal, State, Bureau of Land Management, and private land.  Firefighting resources supporting this incident are from local, out of state and Federal who are providing fire suppression support with air resources, engines, and dozers on the fire line.  State firefighting resources have been exhausted, and out of state and international firefighting support is being requested. The Federal Principal Advisor confirmed the threat to homes, overhead power lines, and rail line.  The fire is at zero percent contained.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator, Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the Moccasin Hill Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster.  Murphy approved the state’s request for federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) on July 14, 2014 at 11:16 a.m. PDT.

On July 13, 2014, the State of Oregon submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Moccasin Hill Fire burning in Klamath County.  At the time of the request, the fire had burned six homes and was threatening 125 homes in and around the subdivision of Moccasin Hill north of the Town of Sprague River. Approximately 100 people had evacuated the area.  The fire started on July 13, 2014, and has burned approximately 2,900 acres of private land. Firefighting resources on scene include: approximately 200 personnel, five air platforms, five helicopters, 10 engines, water tenders and a Type 2 Incident Management Team. There are two other large fires burning uncontrolled within the State.  The Federal Principal Advisor confirmed the threat to homes. The fire is at approximately zero percent containment.
