DENVER – Local governments in Adams, Boulder, and Park Counties and the City and County of Denver are now eligible to receive federal assistance for some of their costs incurred during this spring’s storms, according to state and federal officials.

The Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that the counties had been added to the disaster declaration issued by President Obama on July 16, 2015 for 11 counties as the result of the severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, landslides, and mudslides that occurred between May 4 and June 16, 2015.

The disaster declaration for Baca, Elbert, El Paso, Fremont, Logan, Morgan, Pueblo, Saguache, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma counties made state, county, and local governments, as well as certain non-profit organizations, eligible to receive reimbursement for repairing infrastructure damage caused by the storms, as well as the cost of responding to them.

“The addition of these counties to Colorado’s disaster declaration means that under FEMA’s Public Assistance Grant Program, qualified organizations in these counties will receive no less than 75 percent of the eligible costs incurred as a result of the disaster,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Dolph Diemont, head of FEMA’s recovery efforts in Colorado.

“We sincerely appreciate Administrator Fugate and FEMA for their prompt approval of our add-on county request. This opens the door for Federal assistance to these affected communities and ensures nobody is left behind,” said DHSEM Emergency Management Director Dana Reynolds.

The state and FEMA are working to schedule Applicants’ Briefings for officials of eligible entities and non-profit organizations in the newly declared counties.  DHSEM will provide information on the application process, as well as deadlines for submission of necessary documents to receive federal reimbursement.

The Applicants’ Briefings may be followed by face-to-face meetings in local communities between FEMA, Colorado DHSEM officials and eligible applicants.

Additional Colorado Counties Approved For Disaster Aid

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the State of Arizona to combat the Willow Fire burning in Mohave County.

On August 8, 2015 the State of Arizona submitted a request for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) Declaration for the Willow Fire.  At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 150 primary homes in and around the communities of Topack Lake Ranchos and Delta City.  Mandatory evacuations were taking place for approximately 400 people.  The fire started on August 8, 2015 and has burned in excess of 6,000 total acres.

The Regional Administrator for FEMA’s Region IX office determined that the Willow Fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster and approved the State’s request on August 8, 2015.

The Disaster Relief Fund provides funding for FMAGs through FEMA to assist in fighting fires which threaten to cause major disasters. Eligible costs covered by FMAGs can include expenses for field camps; equipment use; repair and replacement; tools; materials; supplies and mobilization and demobilization activities.

Arizona to receive FEMA funding to battle Willow Fire in Mohave County

OKLAHOMA CITY – The remaining Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) set up by the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are closing this Friday, August 14 but FEMA help is still available for those in need.

Anyone who has not yet registered for disaster aid has until August 26 to do so. For the more than 10,000 Oklahomans who have registered, information and guidance is only a phone call or mouse click away.

“Residents and business owners across the state continue to work hard recovering from this year’s disaster, and some may continue to have questions about the disaster assistance process” said OEM Deputy Director and Oklahoma State Coordinating Officer Michelann Ooten. “It’s important for them to know where to turn to get their questions answered as the recovery centers close”.

The FEMA Help Line is 800-621-3362. Telephone operators are on duty from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Help is available on-line at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.  Those who still need to register, update their information, or just ask disaster-related questions should contact FEMA using either method.

Disaster Help is Available Even After Recovery Centers Close

NEW YORK, NY — The Borough of Deal’s Board of Commissioners are happy to report that the Deal Fire Company No. 2 will receive a $60,000 federal grant to replace out-of-date rescue equipment.  The Borough of Deal is located within Monmouth County, New Jersey.

The new extrication equipment will enable the town’s firefighters to rescue people trapped in a car after an accident or unable to move as a result of another calamity.  Extrication tools include hydraulically operated cutters and spreaders.  Cutters enable firefighters to cut through buckled car metal as a scissors would do to cloth, while spreaders widen cut metal to allow extrication of a pinned individual.  

The $60,376 award is an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from Region II of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and was announced here today by Dale McShine, Director of the Grants Division of the Region. The federal share of the grant totals $57,501.  The grant became effective July 31, 2015.

“This rescue capability is a key part of our fire company’s responsibility in Deal and in assisting our neighboring communities,” said Fire Chief John Anastasia.  “And we value this grant because it takes the place of our aging equipment and will allow us to do our job more safely and effectively,” he added.

FEMA’s Ms. McShine pointed out that in 2013, Assistance to Firefighter Grants provided funding of $21.9 million to 192 fire departments and EMS agencies throughout Region II, which includes New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.  “We know that these grants play major roles in the local communities that receive them,” she said, “and we are very pleased to be a part of this process.”

Assistance for Affected Individuals and Families Can Include as Required:

    Assistance for the Commonwealth and Affected Local Governments Can Include as Required:

  • Payment of not less than 75 percent of the eligible costs for emergency protective measures, taken to save lives and protect property and public health. FEMA specialists will be on hand in Hays County at in-store information centers to answer questions and offer home improvement tips and proven methods to prevent and lessen damage from future disasters. Most of the information is geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Advice on Preventing Damage from Future Storms Offered at Home Improvement Store in Hays County, Texas

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma homeowners, renters and business owners affected by the May 5 through June 22 storms have less than two weeks to register for state and federal disaster assistance.

Homeowners, renters and businesses in 45 counties approved for Individual Assistance have until August 26 to seek assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The designated counties are Adair, Atoka, Beckham, Bryan, Caddo, Canadian, Carter, Cherokee, Choctaw, Cleveland, Coal, Comanche, Cotton, Delaware, Garvin, Grady, Hughes, Jefferson, Johnston, Kiowa, Latimer, Le Flore, Lincoln, Logan, Love, Marshall, Mayes, McClain, McCurtain, McIntosh, Murray, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Okmulgee, Ottawa, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Pushmataha, Rogers, Seminole, Stephens, Tillman, Tulsa and Wagoner.

To date, more than $44.9 million has been provided to Oklahoma disaster survivors. This assistance includes $16.5 million in funding for disaster related housing needs and other disaster related expenses, more than $18.7 in SBA loans, and more than $9.7 million in payments to survivors through the National Flood Insurance Program.

SBA has issued 1,463 applications for low-interest disaster loans to homeowners and businesses. More than $16.9 million has been approved for homeowners, and more than $1.7 million in loans has been approved for business owners rebuilding after the storms.

Disaster Recovery Center Opens at New Location in San Marcos for Texas Flood Survivors

SEATTLE – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Krauss Lane Fire in Josephine County, Oregon.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. Murphy approved the state of Oregon’s request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) at 11:34 p.m. PDT on Aug. 8, 2015.

At the time of the state’s request, the fire had burned two homes, and was threatening 255 primary and 111 secondary homes, as well as 167 other structures near the city of Cave Junction. Sheltering operations had been established at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Cave Junction.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Oregon’s eligible firefighting costs for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. FMAGs provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners, and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

FMAGs are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Six Months Remain Before Flood Maps Become Final in Travis, Williamson and Bastrop Counties, Texas

DENTON, Texas ––In six months, new flood maps for parts of Travis, Williamson and Bastrop counties in  Texas will become effective. This includes the following cities and communities: Austin; Cedar Park; Creedmoor; Mustang Ridge; Rollingwood; Webberville; West Lake Hills; and unincorporated areas of Travis and Bastrop counties.

Local, state and federal officials are encouraging everyone to view the maps before Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016 in order to understand their flood risk and then consider buying flood insurance.

Most property insurance policies do not cover the effects of a flood. Floods can place people at risk of uninsured loss to their businesses, homes and personal property if they don’t have either a private flood insurance policy or coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a voluntary protection program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Flooding is the #1 natural disaster in the U.S. and only flood insurance covers these unexpected, damaging and sometimes fatal events. “Where there is rain, there could be flooding,” said FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson. “Everyone lives in a flood zone.”
