BATON ROUGE, La. —  State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers have opened in St. Mary and Iberville parishes to assist homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage to their home or personal property as a result of Hurricane Isaac.

Specialists from the state of Louisiana, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are on hand to answer questions and provide information on the types of assistance available to survivors.

FEMA MITIGATION ADVISERS TO OFFER REBUILDING TIPS IN LAFOURCHE PARISH

BATON ROUGE, La. — Survivors from Lafourche Parish who are rebuilding after Hurricane Isaac can receive a free consultation with hazard mitigation advisers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The free mitigation stations will be open on a walk-in basis at Lowe’s in Thibodaux starting Sunday.

The advisers can answer questions about protecting homes from future disaster-related damage, as well as offer tips and techniques to build hazard-resistant homes. Most of the information and the free publications provided are geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Hurricane safety and recovery topics to be covered include preparedness, roof repair, rebuilding flooded homes, and mold and mildew cleanup and prevention.

Hurricane Isaac Recovery Marks Milestones in Helping Survivors

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and its state and local partners are marking three milestones in Louisiana’s recovery from Hurricane Isaac:

  • $100 million in approved disaster assistance;
  • 10,000 visits to Disaster Recovery Centers;
  • And approaching 100,000 housing inspections;

“Disaster assistance is getting where it is needed, to the individuals, families and communities affected by Hurricane Isaac,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Hall of FEMA. “The rebuilding effort is happening, and FEMA is continuing to support our local, state and federal partners as they recover.”

In the 16 days since the major disaster declaration, $100,961,288 in disaster assistance has been approved for Louisiana. That total includes $69,790,187 in Individual Assistance grants and $272,000 in U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans for qualified homeowners, renters and business owners.

Public Assistance funds have reached $30,899,351 for eligible state agencies, local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations in designated parishes that provide critical and essential services to the general public.

Meanwhile, Disaster Recovery Centers have logged 10,067 visits. Recovery centers are readily accessible facilities where applicants may go for information about FEMA, the SBA or other disaster assistance programs, or with questions related to their cases. Twenty centers are open in 15 parishes.

FEMA housing inspectors have completed 98,702 inspections during which they document damage but do not determine the applicant’s eligibility. They check for damage to the structure and building systems, to major appliances and septic systems and wells, and report the information to FEMA. This speeds up the process of providing assistance.

To date, more than 171,000 individuals and families have registered for assistance at www.disasterassistance.gov, via web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362 or TTY 1-800-462-7585. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services may call 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers are operating from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Louisianians in three more parishes – East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana and West Feliciana – can now apply for federal and state disaster assistance as the three were added Friday to the major disaster declaration for Hurricane Isaac.

Homeowners, renters and business owners in the three parishes may now register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for assistance and report their uninsured or underinsured property damage or destruction from the storm.

“Residents of the three parishes should register with FEMA as soon as possible,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Hall. “We have approved more than $100 million for survivors in Louisiana and we’d like to start getting help to eligible survivors in these three parishes as well.”

Disaster assistance for individuals may include:

  • Grants to help pay for temporary housing and emergency home repairs to make a home habitable;
  • Grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance;
  • Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Residents of the parishes affected by the hurricane should register with FEMA even if they have insurance. FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments, but underinsured applicants may receive help after their insurance claims have been settled.

Registering with FEMA is required for federal aid, even if the person has registered with another disaster-relief organization or local community or church organization. FEMA registrants must use the name that appears on their Social Security card. Applicants will be asked to provide:

  • Social Security number
  • Address of the damaged home or apartment
  • Description of the damage
  • Information about insurance coverage
  • A current contact telephone number
  • An address where they can get mail
  • Bank account and routing numbers if they want direct deposit of any financial assistance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers the following contact information for Louisianians who have to replace important documents that may be required for identification purposes or to show proof of occupancy, such as birth certificates, social security cards, drivers’ licenses, state-issued identification cards, tax bills, deeds, mortgage payment receipts, insurance policies or utility bills:

BATON ROUGE, La – L’Agence fédérale des situations d’urgence (Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA), à la demande de l’État de Louisiane, a démarré son programme d’aide à l’hébergement temporaire, ce qui permet aux évacués des zones touchées par l’ouragan Isaac, bénéficiant de l’aide et dont les voisinages ne sont pas accessibles ou dont les domiciles ont été détruits de séjourner à l’hôtel ou dans un motel pendant une période limitée, tous frais et taxes payés directement à l’hôtel par la FEMA.

« L’aide à l’hébergement temporaire offre aux rescapés des logements provisoires en attendant de trouver et de mettre en place d’autres solutions de logement, » explique Mike Hall,  agent de coordination fédérale. « Nous oeuvrons étroitement avec notre État et les partenaires régionaux pour mettre au point une solution de logement à long terme dans le but d’aider les rescapés de l’ouragan Isaac jusqu’à ce que leur foyer et collectivité soit remis en état ou réparés. »

Pour bénéficier de l’aide à l’hébergement temporaire, les évacués doivent remplir les conditions suivantes :

  1. La résidence principale doit se situer dans une des zones qui a été désignée comme zone sinistrée ;
  2. La résidence principale est inaccessible ou rendue inhabitable en raison de dommages ou de l’absence de courant ; et
  3. La FEMA doit pouvoir vérifier leur identité.

 La période d’aide initiale démarre à compter du 3 3 sept. jusqu’au 16 sept. 2012. Les repas, les appels téléphoniques et autres frais imprévus ne sont pas couverts, et les frais de logement supérieurs à l’allocation autorisée sont à la charge des demandeurs.  Le programme ne rembourse pas les dépenses d’hôtel précédemment engagées.

Mississippi Major Disaster Declaration Amended to Include Individual Assistance

WASHINGTON – Today, FEMA announced an amendment to the major disaster declaration for the State of Mississippi to include the Individual Assistance Program.

Federal funding is now available to affected individuals in for Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, and Pearl River counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, and uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and households recover from the effects of the disaster.

Individuals and households who sustained losses in the designated counties can begin applying for assistance by registering online at http://www.disasterassistance.gov, or by web enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov. Those without access to the internet may call FEMA’s toll-free number at 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. Mississippi Major Disaster Declaration Amended to Include Individual Assistance

Sept. 4 Deadline Approaching for Businesses to Apply for Tropical Storm Debby Assistance

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Businesses in counties affected by Tropical Storm Debby can benefit from federal disaster assistance, but the deadline for registration is nearing.

Businesses of all sizes, as well as nonprofit organizations, need to apply for disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration by Sept. 4.  These low-interest loans are intended to cover uninsured or under-insured losses.

Disaster loans are available for businesses that have had business assets damaged by Tropical Storm Debby. Damaged real estate, equipment and inventory are eligible for repair or replacement with SBA disaster loans. Businesses may apply for up to $2 million in loans with interest rates as low as 4 percent.

Businesses suffering substantial economic loss, but no physical property damage may be eligible for an economic injury disaster loan of up to $2 million to meet necessary financial obligations – expenses a business would have paid if the disaster had not occurred.

An electronic loan application may be completed online via SBA’s website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Business owners can contact the SBA for information by calling 800-659-2955 or going to www.sba.gov. Survivors who are deaf or hard of hearing and use a TTY can call 800-877-8339.

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
