ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A state and federal Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is set to open Tuesday, July 16, in Fairbanks to assist individuals, households and businesses affected by the 2013 spring floods.

The center is located at 751 Old Richardson Hwy., Suite 202, Fairbanks, AK 99701. The center provides face-to-face help from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.

The center is staffed by disaster recovery specialists who can provide information and answer questions about flood-related assistance.

Those with 2013 spring flooding losses in the Alaska Gateway Regional Educational Attendance Area (REAA), Lower Yukon REAA, Yukon Flats REAA, and the Yukon-Koyukuk REAA are encouraged to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or online at DisasterAssistance.gov. Registration by mobile device is also available at www.m.fema.gov. Those with a speech disability or hearing loss who use TTY can call 800-462-7585 (TTY).  Multilingual registration can be done by phone.

Staff at the recovery centers can review and update applicant information and address individual questions and concerns.

Those individuals unable to register by phone or online may register at the DRC. If you intend to register at the DRC, please bring:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Current and pre-disaster address
  • Block and lot number
  • A telephone number where you can be contacted
  • Insurance information

Total household annual income

  • A routing and account number from your bank (only necessary if you want to have disaster assistance funds transferred directly into your bank account). Lookup your bank routing number.
  • A description of your losses that were caused by the disaster.

FEMA disaster assistance may include grants to help pay for housing, replace personal property and reimburse medical, storage and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or charities. Assistance may also include low-interest federal disaster loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA).

SBA offers disaster loans to homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private, nonprofit organizations for their uncompensated losses. Homeowners may borrow up to $200,000 to repair or replace their primary residence. Homeowners and renters may borrow up to $40,000 to replace personal property. Businesses may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace their property damage and/or economic losses.

TRENTON, N.J. — FEMA and the State of New Jersey will be holding an open house at the Mercer County Public Library in Lawrenceville on Wednesday, July 24, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide information and answer questions about the revised preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps and Flood Insurance Study for Mercer County, New Jersey, which were released on May 30, 2013. The library is located at 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville. 

Residents will have the opportunity to view the maps at the open house or at the Lawrenceville Municipal Office.

Fema, New Jersey Show Maps At Mercer Open House

TRENTON, N.J. — As New Jersey continues recovery from Sandy inspectors from many different program areas of the Federal Emergency Management Agency are working in the Garden State.

FEMA inspectors may be:

  • verifying damage to homes
  • working with the National Flood Insurance Program to estimate substantially damaged structures in hard-hit areas.

Many but not all FEMA inspectors will be wearing FEMA clothing however, all FEMA inspectors will carry official FEMA identification.

The arrival of an inspector from FEMA means the damage to a home will be identified and recorded.

Identifying damage is an important step in determining both the amount and the types of assistance FEMA may provide.

In addition to FEMA inspectors, other government agencies, such as Housing and Urban Development or the SBA, may also have inspectors working in communities across the state.

FEMA inspectors never charge a fee to inspect damage.

Fema Inspectors Continue To Help Recovery In New Jersey

Who:

Alaskans living or working within the Alaska Gateway REAA, Lower Yukon REAA, Yukon Flats REAA and the Yukon Koyukuk REAA which were impacted by the May 17 through June 11 flooding who are self-employed or not eligible for the state’s unemployment compensation program. The services are implemented through a collaborative agreement between the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Alaska Legal Services Corporation.

What:

A toll-free helpline is now available for survivors who are unable to afford a lawyer. For free legal help call 1-800-478-5401 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ADT Monday through Friday. Messages can be left at any time.

The type of free legal help includes:

•    Assistance with securing FEMA and other government benefits available to disaster survivors
•    Assistance with life, medical and property insurance claims
•    Help with home repair contracts and contractors
•    Replacement of wills and other important legal documents destroyed in the flood
•    Assisting in consumer protection matters, remedies and procedures
•    Counseling on mortgage foreclosure problems
•    Counseling on landlord-tenant issues

Where:     

Includes individuals living or working in the communities of Eagle, Tok, Circle, Fort Yukon, Galena, Hughes, Koyukuk, Manley, Stevens Village, Tanana, and Emmonak, as well as other communities within the areas affected by flooding from May 17 through June 11, 2013.

Disaster Legal Assistance Available for Alaskans

TRENTON, N.J. — Disaster assistance may be available for losses not covered by an insurance settlement for New Jersey survivors of Superstorm Sandy.

That is why the Federal Emergency Management Agency urges survivors who have registered for disaster assistance to call the FEMA Helpline, 800-621-3362 as soon as they receive their insurance settlement.

When the insurance check finally comes it may not cover all the losses a survivor has had, so if you applied for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency you should let FEMA know that you have your insurance settlement.Make sure you have the registration number FEMA assigned to your application.

If you received a letter from FEMA saying you were not eligible for assistance, part of the reason may be that your insurance settlement could not be factored into your application.

If you have already filed an appeal of the original assistance decision, that appeal may be amended based on your insurance settlement.

These are just a few of the reasons it is important applicants stay in touch with FEMA.

Survivors who have registered for assistance should keep their contact information current to ensure timely delivery of important assistance updates.

Keeping one’s contact information current with FEMA will also help connect survivors with FEMA’s home inspectors. Unnecessary delays may occur if an inspector is unable to reach an applicant by phone to schedule an appointment. Applicants are also urged to keep their appointments with home inspectors in order to avoid delays.

Insurance May Not Cover Everything So Stay In Touch With Fema

WASHINGTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), through its Caribbean Area office in Puerto Rico and in coordination with the National Weather Service, is monitoring the conditions of Tropical Storm Chantal.

According to the National Weather Service, a tropical storm watch is in effect for the coastal waters of the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours somewhere within the specified areas. Tropical storms often bring storm surge and significant rainfall and flooding.

FEMA urges residents in potentially affected areas to closely monitor the storm and take steps now to be prepared in advance of severe weather and most importantly, follow the direction of commonwealth and territory officials. At this time, it is still too early to know whether the storm could pose an immediate threat to the eastern coast of the United States, but for individuals in areas that could be affected now is the time to refresh your emergency kit and review your family plan. If you do not have an emergency kit or family plan, or to learn about steps you can take now to prepare your family for severe weather, visit www.Ready.gov.

Residents or visitors in Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands:

Listen to the instructions of local officials. Local officials make decisions on sheltering in place or going to your pre-designated safe meeting location.

Have important supplies ready to sustain you and your family, if needed. This includes water, a battery-powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, cell phone charger, medicines, non-perishable food, and first aid supplies.

Stay up-to-date with the latest forecast – Follow local radio and TV reports, as well as forecasts from the National Hurricane Center.

FEMA stands behind the first responders who continue to fight the blazes across the West.”

“It is with great sorrow that I received news of the loss of 19 firefighters responding to the Yarnell Hill Fire in Yavapai County, Arizona. This is a tragic loss for the citizens of Arizona and the nation as a whole.  These brave firefighters were responding to a wildfire with the potential to destroy homes and structures in a wildfire season among the worst in many years.
 
“The U.S. Fire Administration remains in close coordination with the fire-fighting communities in Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Department of Interior and the National Interagency Fire Center. FEMA recently awarded a fire management assistance grant for the Yarnell Hill Fire, making financial support available for ongoing efforts to fight and mitigate the volatile wildfire conditions.”

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that federal disaster aid has been made available for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and ordered federal aid to supplement the Tribe’s efforts in the area affected by severe storms and flooding during the period of May 25 to June 1, 2013.

Federal funding is available to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms and flooding.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for the Tribe. 

Gary R. Stanley has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal recovery operations in the affected area.  Stanley said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the Tribe and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

President Declares Major Disaster for Standing Rock Sioux Tribe

Biloxi, Miss. earns Discount on Flood Insurance Premiums

ATLANTA – Biloxi residents with flood insurance policies will now receive a decrease on their annual flood premiums thanks to the city’s active participation in the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System.

FEMA Region IV Floodplain Management and Insurance Branch Chief Susan Wilson recognized Biloxi officials today with a plaque for the city’s efforts in becoming the third city in the state to earn a Class 5 community rating.

“Reaching a Class 5 rating is so rare nationwide that it really speaks to the local officials and their hard work and determination,” Wilson said. “They understand the extra effort isn’t just for a decrease to insurance premiums, but it is ensuring the entire city is more resistant to flood damage and more disaster resilient overall.”

The CRS rewards communities that voluntarily take steps to reduce flood risks beyond the minimum requirements of the NFIP.  These steps, which include increasing flood protection and implementing preparedness and mitigation activities, lead to safer communities and ultimately help saves lives and property. As a result, property owners and renters in CRS-participating communities enjoy a reduction in flood insurance premiums. Communities are ranked from a 10 to 1 scale which determines their flood insurance discounts.

Biloxi policyholders began receiving flood insurance discounts from the CRS program in 1996. As a result of additional steps the community has recently taken, the community moved from a CRS Class 6 to a CRS Class 5 effective May 1, earning an additional five percent savings on flood insurance.

There are more than 5,900 flood insurance policies in Biloxi, representing more than $1.5 billion in flood insurance coverage.  Policyholders located in the high risk areas of flooding, or Special Flood Hazard Areas, can now receive a 25 percent discount on their policy premium, which is an average savings of $285 per policy.  Some policyholders in the lower risk areas are eligible for a 10 percent discount.  In total, policyholders realize an annual savings of more than $437,000 because of the community’s CRS participation. 

CRS is a voluntary program for NFIP-participating communities. The intended goals of the program are to reduce flood losses, facilitate accurate insurance ratings and to promote the awareness of flood insurance.  The two other Mississippi communities to earn a Class 5 rating are Pascagoula and Waveland.

Mississippi Community Recognized For Reducing Flood Risks

DENTON, Texas – More than a combined total of $11.2 million was recently awarded to the state of Louisiana by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for reimbursement of emergency protective measures undertaken during Hurricane Isaac, as well as to cover storm-related repairs to a pump station in Plaquemines Parish. 

The projects include:

• More than $4.6 million for the State of Louisiana – Department of Health and Hospitals for emergency protective measures consisting of labor, equipment, materials and  contract costs;
• More than $2.1 million to Plaquemines Parish for permanent repairs to the Scarsdale Pump Station;
• Nearly $3.4 million to Dixie Electric Membership Corporation for emergency protective measures consisting of contract costs to restore power, labor, equipment, materials and rented equipment;
• And more than $1 million to South Louisiana Electric for the emergency protective measures consisting of the use of contract personnel and equipment for the restoration of electrical service.
 
FEMA’s contributions, made possible by Public Assistance grants, represent a 75 percent federal cost share. FEMA awards funding for projects directly to the state of Louisiana; the state then forwards the grant to the eligible applicant.
