NEW YORK – All Disaster Recovery Centers in New York will stop offering service on Sundays beginning Feb. 3, 2013. Hurricane Sandy survivors in New York can still receive assistance Monday through Saturday at any recovery center.

The State of New York and the Federal Emergency Management Agency closely monitor visitor traffic at all New York Disaster Recovery Centers and revise hours of operation accordingly. Traffic at the recovery centers has slowed on Sundays. So far, more than 145,000 Hurricane Sandy survivors have visited recovery centers in New York.

In addition, the recovery center located in the Sheepshead Bay Club, 3076 Emmons Ave., Brooklyn, NY, 11235, will close early, at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013. The center will open at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4.

The recovery center at the American Legion, 209 Cross Bay Blvd., Broad Channel, NY 11693, will open at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2013.

The two centers’ normal operating hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Survivors who need help may still visit any of the other 17 centers that remain open throughout New York. To find the nearest center, the following options are available: Text DRC and a Zip Code to 43362 (4FEMA), and a text message will be sent back with the address. Also, the Disaster Recovery Center locator is available online at www.FEMA.gov/disaster-recovery-centers.

Hurricane Sandy survivors in New York have until Feb. 27, 2013, to register for federal disaster assistance, which can include money for rent, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to the State of Arkansas to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by severe winter storms during the period of December 25 to December 26, 2012.

The President’s action makes federal funding available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged in Garland, Grant, Hot Spring, Lonoke, Perry, Pulaski, and Saline counties.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Sandy Coachman has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.  Coachman said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Duluth, MN—Disasters typically bring out the very best in people and there are countless stories of neighbors helping neighbors.  Unfortunately, some scam artists try and take advantage of disaster survivors looking for help, by trying to gather your personal information or to collect payment for disaster assistance.

 

If there is any doubt, do not give out any information, and report people claiming to be government workers to local authorities.  To safeguard against disaster-related fraud, Federal Emergency Disaster Agency (FEMA) officials recommend the following precautions:

 

  • Federal workers do not solicit or accept money.
  • Ask for official laminated photo ID.  A FEMA shirt or jacket is not absolute proof

of identity.

  • Safeguard personal information.  Do not give personal information such as Social Security and bank account numbers unless you initiate the call. 
  • Beware of people going door-to-door.  People going door-to-door to damaged homes, or phoning homeowners claiming to be building contractors could be scam artists, especially if they solicit financial information.

 

Suspicious activity should be reported to local authorities or to the FEMA Fraud Hotline at

Deadline for Hurricane Sandy Assistance Extended to March 1

TRENTON, N.J. — Hurricane Sandy survivors now have until March 1 to register for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

FEMA can provide money to homeowners to repair uninsured damage to essential living areas. Also, homeowners and renters may receive money to replace essential personal property.   

Registering with FEMA can be done online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by a smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov or by phone at 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585.

Survivors also have until March 1 to return disaster loan applications to the Small Business Administration.

Call FEMA With Questions About Determination Letters

Hurricane survivors who have received a determination letter from FEMA saying they are ineligible for assistance and they disagree with that determination should contact FEMA and file an appeal.

Applicants with questions about any correspondence from FEMA should call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362)/TTY 800-462-7585 or visit a disaster recovery center and speak to a representative about their particular situation.

Disaster Recovery Centers Provide One-on-one Assistance

At a disaster recovery center, Sandy survivors can get clarification on determination letters, check on the status of their applications and get information on other agencies that may provide help.

SBA representatives are available to help survivors apply for low-interest disaster loans as well as FEMA mitigation specialists who can provide information on cost-effective building and repair techniques to reduce property damage.

Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Briefing Scheduled for Pike County

TRENTON, N.J. — While New Jersey survivors of Hurricane Sandy have until March 1 to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for disaster assistance, more than $780 million in disaster assistance has been approved to speed recovery.

FEMA has approved more than $300 million in housing assistance for more than 52,000 people. Housing assistance includes temporary rental assistance and grants to repair and replace storm-damaged primary residences. More than $42 million has been approved to help survivors replace hurricane-damaged personal property and to help meet medical, dental, funeral, transportation and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other federal, state and charitable aid programs.

In rare cases, FEMA is providing temporary housing to Sandy survivors. Empty apartments at Fort Monmouth are being renovated to house some survivors. More than 40 apartments are occupied and when work is complete, there will be 115 units ranging from one bedroom to four bedrooms. FEMA is also installing a limited number of manufactured homes at commercial mobile home parks.

Homeowners and renters are also being helped with low-interest disaster loans. The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $277 million in loans to individuals. Another $31.7 million has been approved for New Jersey businesses.

More than $129 million has been channeled to state and local governments to help remove hurricane debris and restore disaster-damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure. Among the largest grants was $11.2 million to the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission for emergency repairs to a wastewater treatment plant that serves 48 communities and treats 330 million gallons of sewage daily.

FEMA and federal partners such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have helped local communities replace critical public facilities damaged by the hurricane. The Sea Bright Fire Department, for example, was knocked out of commission by storm damage. The Corps set up a temporary fire station with a four-bay fire truck tent and a 56-foot trailer in a beach access parking lot.

Hurricane Sandy Assistance Reaches Nearly $800 Million In New Jersey

NEW YORK – Hurricane Sandy survivors in New York have until 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, to receive assistance at three Disaster Recovery Centers in Queens and Brooklyn.
