ATLANTA, Ga.–The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized federal funds to reimburse costs to Georgia to fight the Tatum Gulf Fire burning in Dade County.

This authorization makes FEMA grant funding available to reimburse 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire. Eligible costs can include labor, equipment and supplies used for fighting the fire and costs for emergency work such as evacuations and sheltering, police barricading and traffic control.

“FEMA has approved this request to make sure Georgia has the resources it needs to battle this fire,” said FEMA Regional Administrator Gracia Szczech. “We will continue to work closely with the frontline responders who are fighting this wildfire.”

The state requested a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG), and it was granted in the late evening of November 13, 2016. The fire started on November 11, and at the time of the request, had burned more than 250 acres of state and private land. The fire was threatening 150 homes in and around the City of Trenton and the Rising Fawn community. In addition, the fire is threatening utility lines, a communications tower, roads, and cultural resources. Currently, mandatory evacuations are taking place for approximately 200 people (60 homes) and evacuations are expected to continue. 

Federal fire management assistance is provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to fund firefighting activities when there is a fire threat that could cause a major disaster. Eligible state firefighting costs covered by the aid must first meet a minimum threshold for costs before assistance is provided.

ATLANTA, Ga.–The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized federal funds to reimburse costs to South Carolina to fight the Pinnacle Mountain Fire burning in Pickens County.

This authorization makes FEMA grant funding available to reimburse 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire. Eligible costs can include labor, equipment and supplies used for fighting the fire and costs for emergency work such as evacuations and sheltering, police barricading and traffic control.

“This wildfire is a major risk to lives and property. FEMA has approved this request to ensure that South Carolina has the resources to fight this fire,” said FEMA Regional Administrator Gracia Szczech. “State and local partners are the frontline responders battling this wildfire, and we will continue to work closely with them.”

The state requested a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG), and it was granted in the late afternoon of November 12, 2016. The fire started on November 8, and at the time of the request, had burned in excess of 1,500 acres of state and private land. The fire was threatening 180 homes around Pinnacle Mountain including the Folsom Rest Subdivision (Sugar Likker Road), Bear Valley Golf Club Subdivision, and other numerous subdivisions along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy. The fire was also threatening communication towers, infrastructure, utilities, and  the Greenville watershed, Jocassee gorges, Gravely wildlife management area (black bear refuge), and Table Rock State Park. Mandatory evacuations have taken place for approximately 130 residences.  

Federal fire management assistance is provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to fund firefighting activities when there is a fire threat that could cause a major disaster. Eligible state firefighting costs covered by the aid must first meet a minimum threshold for costs before assistance is provided.

FEMA Authorizes Federal Funds to Help Battle South Carolina Wildfires

RIDGELAND, Miss. – Local governments in Issaquena and Lawrence counties are now eligible to receive federal assistance to help cover expenses and repair damage associated with the Mississippi March floods, according to state and federal officials.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the two counties have been added to the disaster declaration issued by President Obama on March 25, 2016. That declaration authorized assistance for local governments in Bolivar, Claiborne, Clarke, Coahoma, Covington, Forrest, Greene, Holmes, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Lamar, Leake, Leflore, Lincoln, Marion, Panola, Pearl River, Perry, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tunica, Walthall, Washington and Wayne counties.

The disaster declaration makes designated state, county and local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations, eligible to receive reimbursement through the Public Assistance program.

Under the Public Assistance grant program, FEMA pays 75 percent of the cost for infrastructure repairs, overtime and debris removal. Typically, the remaining 25 percent is split between state and local governments at 12.5 percent each. Eligible nonprofits are responsible for the full 25 percent. The program is administered by the state.

The state and FEMA are working to schedule applicant briefings with officials of eligible entities and nonprofit organizations in the newly designated counties. MEMA and FEMA will provide information on the application process, as well as deadlines for submission of necessary documents to receive federal reimbursement.

The applicant briefings may be followed by face-to-face meetings in local communities between FEMA, state officials and eligible applicants.

Additional Mississippi Counties Approved For Infrastructure Disaster Aid

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the state of California to combat the North Fire burning in San Bernardino County. 

On July 17, 2015, the State of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the North Fire and FEMA approved the state’s request on July 17, 2015. The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening up to threatening 2,700 homes in and around the community of Baldy Mesa, population 54,142. Mandatory evacuations took place on July 17th for approximately 7,600 people and have now been lifted.  The fire started on June 17, 2015, and, at this time, has burned in excess of 4,250 acres. Three residences have been destroyed by the fire.

California to receive FEMA funding to battle North Fire in San Bernardino County

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the state of Arizona combat the Kearney River Fire in Pinal County. 

On June 17, 2015, the State of Arizona submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Kearney River Fire and FEMA approved the state’s request on June 17, 2015. The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening up to 400 homes in and around the community of Kearney, which has a population of approximately 1,950. Mandatory evacuations took place on June 17th for approximately 300 – 400 people.  The evacuation order was lifted this morning.  The fire started on June 17, 2015, and, at this time, has burned in excess of 450 acres of state and private land.  Two residences have been destroyed by the fire.

Arizona to receive FEMA funding to battle Kearney River fire in Pinal County

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the state of California combat the Oregon Fire currently burning in Trinity County.

On August 24, 2014, the State of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Oregon Fire and FEMA approved the State’s request on August 25, 2014. The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 400 primary homes in and around Weaverville with a population of 1,000. Mandatory evacuations are taking place for approximately 375 people, and voluntary evacuations are taking place for approximately 375 people. The fire started on August 24, 2014, and has burned in excess of 650 acres of Federal, State,and private land.

On August 18, 2014, the State of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Way Fire and FEMA approved the State’s request on August 19, 2014. The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 1,300 primary homes in and around the communities of Kernville with a population of 1,395, Wofford Heights with a population of 2,200 and Alta Sierra Community with a population of 300. Mandatory evacuations are taking place for approximately 250 people. The fires started on August 18, 2014, and has burned in excess of 1,908 total acres of Federal, State, and private land.

On May 14, 2014, the State of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Cocos Fire.  The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 1,500 homes in and around the community of San Marcos with a population of 86,752.  Mandatory evacuations due to the Cocos fire are in effect for approximately 6,000 people. The fire started on May 14, 2014 and has burned in excess of 200 acres of state and private land.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the state of California combat the Poinsettia Fire currently burning in Carlsbad, Calif.

On May 14, 2014, the State of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Poinsettia Fire.  The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 2,500 homes in and around the community of Carlsbad, Calif., with a combined population of 105,000. All of the threatened homes are primary residences; none are secondary residences. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations are taking place for approximately 15,000 people.  The fire started on May 14, 2014 and has burned in excess of 100 acres of State and private land. There are 5 other large fires burning uncontrolled within the State.

The state of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration today for the Springs Fire burning in Ventura County. At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 300 homes and 3,000 apartments in and around Camarillo Springs, Dos Vientos, and California State University, Channel Islands, with a total area population of about 10,000. All of the threatened homes are primary residences. So far, the fire has burned in excess of 2,000 acres of state and private land.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.
