Free FEMA Tips at Cape Girardeau Home Improvement Store

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and a local home improvement store are teaming up to provide Cape Girardeau area residents with free information, tips and literature on making their homes stronger and safer. 

FEMA mitigation specialists will be available at the Menards on Siemers Drive in Cape Girardeau between Friday, February 12 and Tuesday, February 16 to answer questions and offer home improvement tips to prevent and lessen damage from future disasters. Most of the information is geared toward do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Times:

  • Friday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Sunday 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Monday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Help Remains Available After Disaster Recovery Center Closes in Bishopville

COLUMBIA, S.C. – One disaster recovery center will close Saturday, Dec. 12 at 3 p.m.:

  • Recreation Center at 397 Chappell Drive in Bishopville

Applicants in Bishopville may still visit other recovery centers to ask disaster assistance questions. They can locate their closest center by visiting asd.fema.gov/inter/locator/home.htm.

Representatives from the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Small Business Administration and other agencies are at centers to answer questions about disaster assistance and low-interest loans.

Many services available at disaster recovery centers are also available by calling the FEMA helpline. Applicants can get help by calling 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585; those who use 711/VRS can call 800-621-3362. Lines are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

NEW YORK – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced that, despite the Thanksgiving holiday, numerous Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are open to assist survivors of Hurricane Sandy.

DRCs are one-stop shops where storm survivors can meet with representatives from the state, FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration and other agencies to get the useful information and help they need.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Teams of hazard mitigation advisers with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be available starting Thursday at home improvement centers in four parishes to offer free consultations to survivors who are rebuilding after Hurricane Isaac.

Survivors can also meet with advisers at the Alligator Festival in St. Charles Parish located at Westbank Bridge Park, 13825 River Road in Luling, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 6:30 p.m.                                                 

The advisers offer tips and techniques on how to protect homes from future disaster-related damage and other measures to make homes stronger and safer; they also have advice on topics such as:

  • emergency preparedness
  • roof repair
  • rebuilding flooded homes
  • home elevation
  • flood insurance
  • mold and mildew cleanup

Most of the information and free publications provided are geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors. The mitigation stations at the home improvement stores will remain open through Oct. 11.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Residents who want to make their homes and businesses more storm resistant can get advice from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mitigation specialists at local building supply stores from April 9 through April 15 in Clarksville, Madison and Evansville.

In addition to answering questions, mitigation specialists will have information about how to rebuild safer and stronger and provide steps that may lessen storm damage in a future disaster. This ranges from creating a disaster family plan to building a “safe room” — a shelter designed to provide occupants a safe place to go when severe weather threatens.

Mitigation specialists will be in stores next week Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
