DENTON, Texas – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has recognized the Arlington Christian Disaster Network’s accomplishments in coordinating preparedness and emergency response efforts. The group received an honorable mention for Excellence in Volunteer Sustainability in the 2015 FEMA Individual and Community Preparedness Awards.

FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson and Region 6 Federal Preparedness Coordinator Randy Meshell presented the award during a recent ceremony at the Arlington Emergency Operations Center.

“Arlington Christian Disaster Network has utilized key partnerships to offer volunteer reception, shelters and emergency preparedness support in countless ways that will benefit Arlington citizens and visitors for years to come,” Robinson said. “I applaud the efforts of both the Arlington Office of Emergency Management and the Arlington Christian Disaster Network for coming together to address the need to coordinate the preparedness and emergency response efforts in your community.”

Among the group’s accomplishments:

  • Bringing together 17 local faith-based organizations to coordinate resources to serve the Arlington community.

  • Recruiting members and managing the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program.

  • Responsible for an additional 55 trained individuals to complement the Arlington CERT program.

  • Providing CERT train-the-trainers and instructors to Arlington Office of Emergency Management.

Each year FEMA’s Individual and Community Preparedness Division recognizes the preparedness efforts of organizations around the country. This year, 138 organizations applied for recognition. There were 11 award winners and 37 honorable mentions.

  • The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana received an honorable mention in the category of Technological Innovations.

Arlington Group Receives 2015 FEMA Community Preparedness Honorable Mention Award

PHILADELPHIA – FEMA Region III has created four new infographics to promote individual and community preparedness. Infographics can be used in many different ways to help reach multiple audiences and guide action. We encourage everyone to use, share and promote these vibrant visual tools. Applicant Registration Site Opens in Rowan County

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Three weeks after President Obama declared a major disaster for Kentucky, approximately $5.3 million in federal aid has been approved to help those affected by the July storms and flooding.

More than 1,000 individuals and households have contacted the Federal Emergency Management Agency for help or information by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362/TTY 800-462-7585.

Some are seeking housing assistance from FEMA because the flooding made their home unlivable. Other forms of disaster assistance are provided by partner agencies such as the Small Business Administration. Other callers may be interested in disaster unemployment assistance.

The following summarizes the disaster recovery effort as of Sept. 2:

  • 504 households have been approved for FEMA grants that assist with temporary rentals and personal property loss.
  • More than $3 million is approved for housing grants, including short-term rental assistance and essential home repair costs on primary residences.
  • More than $480,000 is approved to cover other essential disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses and lost personal possessions.
  • More than $1.7 million has been approved in Small Business Administration disaster loans.
  • 819 home inspections have been completed.
  • 692 visits have been made to disaster recovery centers by people affected by the disaster.
  • 2 disaster recovery centers (Johnson and Carter counties) are currently open.

No matter the degree of loss or insurance coverage, survivors are urged to apply for help. They can use any of the following methods:

More than $5 million Approved for Disaster Aid to Kentucky Flooding Survivors

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Disaster recovery centers, which are operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will not be open on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

The Johnson County disaster recovery center (120 Tays Branch Road in Paintsville) and the Carter County center (539 Hitchins Ave. in Olive Hill) will close Saturday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. and reopen Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. (EDT).

At the centers, specialists from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration can answer questions and provide information on the types of assistance available to survivors of July’s severe storms and flooding. Specialists can help with registration, check an individual’s case, answer questions about an application or review information needed to process an application.

Survivors who suffered losses in Breathitt, Carter, Fleming, Johnson, Perry, Rowan and Trimble counties can continue to register with FEMA online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585, Video Relay Service 800-621-3362) from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (EDT).

Assistance can include money for temporary housing and essential home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

SEATTLE – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Tepee Springs Fire in Idaho County, Idaho.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. Murphy approved the state of Idaho’s request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) at 6:00 p.m. PDT on Aug. 29, 2015. Idaho has had four FMAGs approved since July 2015.

The fire started on August 12, 2015 and had burned in excess of 49,000 acres of federal, state, private and tribal land. At the time of the request, the fire perimeter was located 1.5 miles east of Riggins and had moved 11 miles in 12 hours. The fire was threatening 300 homes in and around the community of Riggins, Idaho. Evacuation orders were issued.

The fire also threatened roads, bridges, cell towers, radio towers, power distribution lines, water, sewer and various local businesses in the area. Also at risk are salmon, steelhead and bull trout, and big horn sheep. There were 130 other large fires burning uncontrolled within the state.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Idaho’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

FMAGs are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; mobilization and demobilization activities; and tools, materials and supplies.

AUSTIN, Texas – Apply by Aug. 27 for assistance from FEMA or the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). You have every reason to do so. 

If you are among thousands of Texans affected by the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that occurred from May 4 to June 22, you may be eligible for a grant or low-interest loan from the SBA. If you answer YES to any of the following questions and were affected by the disaster, you may be eligible.

  • Are you a homeowner, renter or business of any size with disaster-related damage? 

  • Did you file an insurance claim for damage and have not received your settlement? 

  • Are you uninsured or under-insured and have unmet needs?

  • Do you need help applying because English is your second language?

  • Are you a Qualified Alien or the parent of a U.S. citizen in your household?

  • Are you a person with a disability or have an access or functional need?

  • Do you receive Social Security, Medicaid food stamps and are concerned help will affect your benefits?

  • Do you need help, but feel others need it more or that there won’t be enough assistance for everyone?

  • Do you feel you will not qualify for a low-interest loan?

If you have questions or concerns about applying for disaster assistance, call the FEMA helpline before the Aug. 27 deadline. Tell your friends and neighbors that help may be available, but they must register before the deadline.

Remember, FEMA grants do not have to be repaid and you are not required to accept an SBA loan. FEMA assistance is nontaxable and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid or other federal benefits.

Texans Have Every Reason to Register for Disaster Assistance

AUSTIN, Texas – To meet the needs of Texans affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 4 to June 22, a State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Nueces County will transition to a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Center on Friday, Aug. 28.

Thursday, Aug. 27, is the final day for survivors to register for FEMA recovery assistance or to apply for a loan from SBA.

The Disaster Recovery Center at Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds Conference Center- Meeting Room A, B & C, 1213 Terry Shamsie Blvd., Robstown, TX  78380, will close on Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 28, an SBA center will open at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds Conference Center- Business Office Conference Room at 9 a.m. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until further notice.

Representatives from the SBA will be available at the center to meet individually with residents and business owners to answer their questions, explain SBA’s disaster loan program, help them complete their applications and close their approved disaster loans. Assistance will be available in English and Spanish. 

SBA low-interest disaster assistance loans of up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 from SBA to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

Businesses of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

SBA can also lend additional funds to businesses and homeowners to help with the cost of making improvements that protect, prevent or minimize the same type of disaster damage from occurring in the future.

Applying for an SBA low-interest disaster loan is part of federal disaster assistance. Many people who apply to FEMA are automatically referred for a low-interest disaster assistance loan. Survivors should complete SBA loan applications so they can be considered for all available disaster assistance.

SBA is the federal government’s primary source of money to fund long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps businesses of all sizes, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners, and renters fund repairs or rebuilding efforts, and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property.
