Disaster Recovery Centers Closing This Weekend in Shepherd and La Grange

AUSTIN, Texas – The disaster recovery centers in Shepherd in San Jacinto County and La Grange in Fayette County will close this weekend.

Disaster recovery centers are operated jointly by FEMA and the state. Visiting a disaster recovery center is not required to register for FEMA assistance.

After the centers close, Texans whose homes or businesses were affected by the April 17-24 storms and flooding can still register for assistance, get updates about applications, learn about the appeals process or check the status of their claim the following ways:

  • visit DisasterAssistance.gov

  • phone 800-621-3362 (FEMA). Persons who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585. Applicants who use 711 or Video Relay Service may also call 800-621-3362. The toll-free numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Multilingual operators are available.

Recovery officials encourage Texans who registered for disaster assistance with FEMA to stay in touch. If survivors change their addresses or phone numbers they should update FEMA with the information. Missing or erroneous information could result in delays in getting a home inspection or receiving assistance.

Crisis Counseling Available to Disaster Survivors in Gregg, Harrison and Marion Counties

AUSTIN, Texas – Crisis counselors are available to help Texans affected by disaster-related stress in Gregg, Harrison and Marion counties.

For survivors who are having trouble coping or those feeling hopeless, angry or sad—all telltale signs of stress—the Texas crisis counseling hotline will connect them with the help they may need. The toll-free number is 800-832-1009 and the line is answered 24 hours a day.

Crisis counseling services are part of a grant program that assists individuals and communities recovering from the effects of the March 7-29 storms, tornadoes and flooding. Mental health specialists are available to provide emotional support and help survivors develop recovery options as well as direct them to other individuals and agencies for more extensive help.

Experts suggest several ways to relieve the symptoms of stress after a disaster:

  • get back to a daily routine as soon as possible;
  • maintain a healthy diet and get plenty of sleep;
  • get physical exercise every day, even if it is just walking; and
  • spend extra time with children and older friends or family who may feel more vulnerable or confused by the disruption and changes.

Baton Rouge, La. — Disaster survivors from Caddo Parish who are rebuilding after the severe storms and floods that occurred March 8 through April 8 can receive free consultations with hazard mitigation advisors from FEMA. The mitigation representatives are available at Lowe’s in Shreveport Monday, May 23 through Saturday, May 28.

The mitigation advisors will answer questions about protecting homes from future disaster-related damage, as well as offer tips and techniques to build hazard resistant homes. Most of the information and the free publications provided are geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Additional Mississippi Counties Approved For Infrastructure Disaster Aid

RIDGELAND, Miss. – Local governments in Issaquena and Lawrence counties are now eligible to receive federal assistance to help cover expenses and repair damage associated with the Mississippi March floods, according to state and federal officials.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the two counties have been added to the disaster declaration issued by President Obama on March 25, 2016. That declaration authorized assistance for local governments in Bolivar, Claiborne, Clarke, Coahoma, Covington, Forrest, Greene, Holmes, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Lamar, Leake, Leflore, Lincoln, Marion, Panola, Pearl River, Perry, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tunica, Walthall, Washington and Wayne counties.

The disaster declaration makes designated state, county and local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations, eligible to receive reimbursement through the Public Assistance program.

Under the Public Assistance grant program, FEMA pays 75 percent of the cost for infrastructure repairs, overtime and debris removal. Typically, the remaining 25 percent is split between state and local governments at 12.5 percent each. Eligible nonprofits are responsible for the full 25 percent. The program is administered by the state.

The state and FEMA are working to schedule applicant briefings with officials of eligible entities and nonprofit organizations in the newly designated counties. MEMA and FEMA will provide information on the application process, as well as deadlines for submission of necessary documents to receive federal reimbursement.

The applicant briefings may be followed by face-to-face meetings in local communities between FEMA, state officials and eligible applicants.

Nearly $40 Million in Disaster Help Approved for Texas Survivors

AUSTIN, Texas – Nearly $40 million in disaster assistance has been approved for individuals and families in Texas whose properties were damaged or destroyed in the March 7-29 tornadoes and flooding.

This includes more than $17 million in grants to help eligible survivors with home repairs and temporary rental costs and more than $2 million in grants for expenses related to personal property, transportation, medical, dental, funeral and moving costs.

The deadline to register for federal assistance was May 18.

In the 13 counties included in the March disaster declaration, 1,797 registrations were approved for assistance. Those counties are: Erath, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Hood, Jasper, Limestone, Marion, Newton, Orange, Parker, Shelby and Tyler.

The nearly $40 million in federal assistance includes more than $18 million in low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration to businesses, homeowners and renters.

March Storm Survivors in Mississippi Have Until Tuesday to Register With FEMA

RIDGELAND, Miss. – Survivors of the March floods in Mississippi have until Tuesday, May 24, to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for disaster assistance.

Survivors in Bolivar, Clarke, Coahoma, Forrest, George, Greene, Jones, Marion, Panola, Pearl River, Perry, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tunica, Washington and Wayne counties who suffered disaster-related losses to essential living areas in primary residences and have delayed registering for any reason can apply for assistance that may include:

  • Temporary rental assistance and money for essential home repairs to eligible survivors. FEMA’s ultimate goal is to ensure survivors’ dwellings are safe, sanitary and functional.
  • Assistance with disaster-related costs associated with medical, dental, personal property, transportation, moving and storage, or other necessary expenses.

Survivors can register with FEMA online at DisasterAssistance.gov or call FEMA’s helpline at 800-621-3362 (voice, 711 and video relay service). Survivors who are deaf, hard of hearing or who have difficulty speaking may call 800-462-7585 (TTY).

Tuesday is also the deadline to apply for a disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Homeowners or renters who have been referred for a low-interest disaster loan from the SBA should complete and return their loan application to be considered for other possible federal assistance. Survivors do not have to accept a loan, but these loans can help with underinsured losses.

FEMA advises applicants to have their nine-digit FEMA registration number on hand when they call. They also will be asked to verify their identity if they want access to their information.
