WINDSOR, Conn. – The FEMA-State Disaster Recovery Center in Milford will relocate to the former Simon Lake Elementary School.

The center will open at noon, Monday, Nov. 19, in the new location, and then will be open from

8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

There are two Disaster Recovery Centers in the city of Fairfield.

The Disaster Recovery Center at the Senior Center at 100 Mona Terrace, Fairfield, CT will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. The center is closed Sunday, then open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Specialists at the centers can help with registration, check an individual’s case, answer questions about their claim, or review information needed to process their claim. Recovery specialists also can supply contacts for other programs that may be able to help.

WINDSOR, Conn. – Hurricane Sandy survivors who have already registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency are urged to keep in touch with the agency, especially if they have been displaced by the disaster.

Survivors who have registered for assistance should keep their contact information current to ensure timely delivery of important assistance updates.

Keeping one’s contact information current with FEMA will also help connect survivors with FEMA’s home inspectors. Unnecessary delays may occur if an inspector is unable to reach an applicant by phone to schedule an appointment. Applicants are also urged to keep their appointments with home inspectors in order to avoid delays.

WINDSOR, Conn. – The Disaster Recovery Centers in Connecticut are equipped to make sure that people with disabilities get the information they need for their recovery from Hurricane Sandy.

In addition to being fully accessible and ready to help people with vision, mobility or hearing disabilities, each center has sign interpreters available for deaf people who use ASL. The schedule for the interpreters is:

Disaster survivors who don’t understand FEMA correspondence or disagree with FEMA decisions can call the Helpline or visit a disaster recovery center for assistance

CLINTON, Miss. – Everyone who registers with FEMA receives a letter telling them the status of their application. Survivors who don’t understand the letter or disagree with FEMA’s decision should visit a Disaster Recovery Center or call the FEMA Helpline to get more information and assistance with questions.

The most common reason for denial of housing assistance and other aid is that an applicant has not submitted proof of an insurance settlement. Some other reasons for an initial turndown can be that applicants:

  • Have not provided FEMA all the information needed.
  • Did not provide proof of ownership or residence.
  • Have not provided records that showed the damaged property was their primary residence at the time of the disaster.
  • Have not signed essential documents.

FEMA cannot duplicate assistance from insurance benefits or other government sources. However, FEMA aid may be approved if all eligible damage is not covered by private insurance or other government assistance.

Disaster survivors have a right to ask FEMA to reconsider a decision on their eligibility for assistance, but such appeals must be filed in writing within 60 days of the date of the determination letter. Applicants who have questions can call the helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 or visit a disaster recovery center.

Disaster assistance for qualified homeowners and renters may include grants to help pay for temporary housing, emergency home repairs or serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Survivors who are not eligible for FEMA assistance or do not qualify for an SBA loan, may be referred to voluntary agencies, faith-based organizations or other community groups.

Operators are standing by from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time seven days a week, Criswell said. “The process is fast and simple. Even if you are unsure if you qualify, call FEMA and let us determine your eligibility. ”

Va. ­­– President Obama has designated four counties in West Virginia – Lincoln, Marion, Wayne and Logan — as eligible to apply for Individual and Households Assistance to help recover from the damage caused by the recent tornadoes, high winds and flooding. This means that thousands of families and businesses now can apply for federal support.

Lincoln, Marion and Wayne county residents may qualify for assistance for damages that were sustained from February 29 through March 5, and Logan County residents for damages resulting from the flooding that occurred from March 15 onward.

Homeowners, renters and businesses of any size that have sustained damages are being urged to register immediately with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to begin the process.

FEMA will send the applicant a copy of his or her application and some printed material to help explain the full process. These publications are available in English and Spanish.

Then an inspector will phone to arrange for a time and date when the property in question can be looked at and damages assessed. These inspectors are FEMA contractors who carry an official FEMA identification. Under no circumstances will any inspector ask for money or any other consideration to do his job. (It’s a good idea to note the inspector’s name and badge number.) Inspectors file their reports but do not decide on the applicants’ eligibility for assistance, according to FEMA officials.

The applicant must be present when the inspector arrives and be able to provide proof that he or she is the owner or renter of the property that was damaged and that it is the owner’s or renter’s primary residence.

Also on hand at the Disaster Recovery Centers are representatives from the Small Business Administration, SBA spokesman Michael Lampton said. These personnel can explain the low-interest loan packages available to individuals, private nonprofits and businesses of any size. The loans are for the repair or replacement of real estate and/or personal property damaged by the storms and related flooding, officials said. People who register with FEMA may be sent a loan application from the SBA. No one is obligated to take out a loan, according to the SBA, but filling out the application is essential for potentially qualifying for further assistance.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky senior citizens who receive disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a result of the recent severe storms and tornadoes will not lose their Social Security benefits nor have their benefits cut.

Disaster grants will not affect income levels, which might cause a senior citizen to become ineligible for Medicaid, welfare assistance, food stamps or Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Seniors also should know that state/federal grants do not have to be repaid.

“FEMA stands ready to assist disaster survivors, especially senior citizens, in a quick and efficient way so that they can get on with rebuilding their lives,” said Libby Turner, the federal officer in charge of recovery operations in Kentucky. “FEMA urges all senior citizens in the designated counties whose homes or other property were damaged or destroyed during the recent storms and tornadoes to register as soon as possible.”

After registering with FEMA, seniors can visit any Disaster Recovery Center to get answers to questions they may have. Most recovery centers are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. All Disaster Recovery Centers are closed Sundays.

While it is recommended that registration be completed before visiting a recovery center, if a disaster survivor requires help to register with FEMA, they can visit a recovery center for this purpose.
