WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to the State of Oregon to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by a severe winter storm during the period of February 6-10, 2014.

The President’s action makes federal funding available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by a severe winter storm in Benton, Lane, Lincoln, and Linn counties.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Thomas J. Dargan has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.  Dargan said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

President Declares Disaster for Oregon

Following is a summary of key federal disaster aid programs that can be made available as needed and warranted under President Obama’s disaster declaration issued for the State of Georgia.

Assistance for State, Tribal, and Affected Local Governments Can Include as Required:

  • Payment of not less than 75 percent of the eligible costs for emergency protective measures taken to save lives and protect property and public health.  Emergency protective measures assistance is available to state and eligible local governments on a cost-sharing basis.   • Payment of not less than 75 percent of the eligible costs for repairing or replacing damaged public facilities, such as roads, bridges, utilities, buildings, schools, recreational areas and similar publicly owned property, as well as certain private non-profit organizations engaged in community service activities.   • Payment of not more than 75 percent of the approved costs for hazard mitigation projects undertaken by state and local governments to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural or technological disasters.  (Source: FEMA funded, state administered.)

How to Apply for Assistance:

  • Application procedures for state, tribal, and local governments will be explained at a series of federal/state applicant briefings with locations to be announced in the affected area by recovery officials. Approved public repair projects are paid through the state from funding provided by FEMA and other participating federal agencies.

Federal Aid Programs for the State of Georgia Declaration

CHICAGO – Just a few inches of water can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage to your home. A flood insurance policy could protect you from the devastating out-of-pocket expenses caused by flooding.  

Don’t wait until it’s too late. A policy takes 30 days from application and payment to go into effect. And a typical homeowner’s insurance policy does not cover floods.

“Snow thaw and the potential for heavy spring rains heighten the flood risk throughout our area in the coming months,” said FEMA Region V Administrator Andrew Velasquez III.  “A flood insurance policy is the best option to protect your home from the costly damage floodwaters can cause.”

Just last April, many Illinois communities were under water after more than six inches of rain fell in two days, causing localized and riverine flooding throughout the state and damaging thousands of homes and businesses.  Today, with less than 50,000 flood insurance policies in force statewide, a large majority of the more than 5 million Illinois homes remain uninsured against flood damage.

FEMA recommends that all Illinois residents visit FloodSmart.gov or call 1-800-427-2419 to learn how to prepare for floods, how to purchase a flood insurance policy and the benefits of protecting your home or property investment against flooding. Snow Now Means Water Later: Are You Ready?

LINCROFT, N.J. — New Jersey residents who registered with FEMA for disaster assistance prior to the registration deadline of May 1 need to keep in touch with FEMA as they recover and rebuild.

Disaster assistance may be available for losses not covered by insurance. Survivors should get in touch with FEMA as soon as they receive their insurance settlement. Be sure to have the registration number FEMA assigned to your application at hand.

Survivors who registered for disaster assistance before the May 1 deadline may check the status of their applications online at www.disasterassistance.gov or call the FEMA Helpline, 800-621-3362, as soon as receive their insurance settlement.

If you received a letter from FEMA saying you were not eligible for assistance, one reason may be that you had not yet received an insurance settlement and it could not be factored into your application.

If you have already filed an appeal of the original FEMA decision, you are entitled to amend your appeal based on the insurance settlement you received.

These are just a few of the reasons for Sandy survivors to stay in touch with FEMA.

Make sure that you provide current contact information to FEMA to ensure timely delivery of important assistance updates.

Applicants who need to update their contact information or who have questions regarding their application can call the toll-free FEMA helpline, 800-621-3362, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., seven days a week. Help is available in most languages.

New Jersey residents with questions about the National Flood Insurance Program and mitigation techniques have a helpline to call to get the most up-to-date information.

That number is 877-287-9804 for people who need information about flood insurance, flood maps or other mitigation topics and issues. Flood insurance policyholders with questions or concerns about their claims may also speak with NFIP specialists.

The flood insurance-mitigation helpline operates from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Additional information is available at www.floodsmart.gov.

WASHINGTON – Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate today completed calls with Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, Florida Governor Rick Scott, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, and Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant about ongoing efforts to prepare for Tropical Storm Karen.

Fugate reiterated that Gulf Coast states have the full support of FEMA and the rest of the federal family in advance of the storm making landfall. The governors did not express any unmet needs at this time. Fugate’s calls were preceded by outreach from FEMA’s Regional Administrators to emergency management officials in potentially impacted states.

10th annual National Preparedness Month encourages Americans to take steps to toward resiliency and marks the 10th Anniversary of its Ready Campaign

WASHINGTON – Today, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate kicked off the tenth annual National Preparedness Month (NPM), joining local New York City Emergency Management officials and New York City Citizen Corps Council, at the Children’s Museum in Staten Island to talk about the importance of family and community emergency preparedness.

“Each September, we commit to focusing our collective efforts on raising our level of readiness to be prepared for any potential hazard with National Preparedness Month,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. “It is a time for us to promote individual and community preparedness. Events like the one today in New York serve as a reminder for all Americans to be prepared in order to successfully respond to and recover from emergencies and disasters.”

NPM is led by FEMA’s Ready Campaign in partnership with Citizen Corps and the Ad Council, and is a nationwide effort encouraging individuals, families, businesses and communities to work together and take action to prepare for emergencies. 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of Ready, a public service advertising media campaign that has garnered in excess of $1billion in donated media placements, over 77 million visitors to its websites and has had in excess of 88 million pieces of preparedness materials requested or downloaded.

NPM is an opportunity to disseminate emergency preparedness information and host sponsor activities across the country to help Americans understand what it truly means to be ready.  This year a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) were launched as part of the Ready Kids campaign. The TV, radio, outdoor, print and digital PSAs take a humorous approach to emphasize the importance for parents to involve their children in the preparedness process.  Through these PSAs, families are provided preparedness conversation starters including: who to call as your out-of-state emergency contact, where to meet if everyone is separated, and what to pack as part of your emergency supply kit. LINCROFT, N.J. — Family disaster preparedness plans are a good thing to have in place. But many such plans often overlook important loved ones – the family pet.

Whether you decide to stay home or evacuate to a safer location, advance plans for pets are essential to keeping the family unit intact. Plan how you will evacuate and where you will go.

Public shelters may not allow pets. Perhaps family or friends may be willing to take in you and your pets in an emergency. Other options may include a hotel or motel, a boarding facility, such as a kennel or veterinary hospital. It’s important to determine your options before an emergency happens.

The steps below can help keep animals safe and a loving part of the family if disaster strikes:

  • Find shelter for your pet – Never evacuate without the family pets because they rarely survive on their own. Make sure there is a predetermined place the family and pets can go in the case of an evacuation because not all shelters allow pets.  If you plan early enough, some pet shelters will make reservations for pets.
  • Develop a buddy system – Plan with neighbors, friends or relatives to make sure that someone is available to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so.
  • Create a pet emergency kit – Along with an emergency preparedness kit for your household, it is also a good idea to create one for your pets. Some items to include are:
    • A pet first-aid kit with all pet medications
    • Enough food to last up to a week, stored in an airtight, waterproof container
    • At least three days of water specifically for the pets
    • Toys to occupy pets
    • A collar with ID tag, harness or leash
    • Important documents such as copies of registration information, adoption papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a clean plastic bag or waterproof container
    • A crate or other pet carrier
    • Sanitation supplies, which may include litter and litter box, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household cleaner
    • A picture of you and your pet together in case of a possible separation during an emergency – you may need help in identifying your pet

Creating A Disaster Preparedness Plan? Don’t Forget Your Pet

Aurora, Ill. – Only one week remains for Illinoisans affected by the storms and flooding that took place from April 16 to May 5 to register for FEMA assistance. The deadline is Wednesday, July 24, 2013.

Some residents may have disqualified themselves for disaster assistance because of misinformation. Those who have received FEMA assistance in the past or have insurance should register anyway. Failure to register by the deadline will prevent possible eligibility for this disaster. 

“We urge everyone who experienced storm damage during that period to register with FEMA to determine their eligibility for recovery of uninsured losses,” said W. Michael Moore, FEMA’s federal coordinating officer for the Illinois disaster declaration.

All it takes is one call to FEMA’s toll-free registration number, 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585.  Multilingual phone operators are available on the FEMA registration lines. Choose Option 2 for Spanish and Option 3 for other languages.

Applicants also may register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services should call 800-621-3362. It is not necessary to visit a Disaster Recovery Center to register with FEMA

One Week to Register for Disaster Assistance

TRENTON, N.J. — Disaster assistance may be available for losses not covered by an insurance settlement for New Jersey survivors of Superstorm Sandy.

That is why the Federal Emergency Management Agency urges survivors who have registered for disaster assistance to call the FEMA Helpline, 800-621-3362 as soon as they receive their insurance settlement.

When the insurance check finally comes it may not cover all the losses a survivor has had, so if you applied for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency you should let FEMA know that you have your insurance settlement.Make sure you have the registration number FEMA assigned to your application.

If you received a letter from FEMA saying you were not eligible for assistance, part of the reason may be that your insurance settlement could not be factored into your application.

If you have already filed an appeal of the original assistance decision, that appeal may be amended based on your insurance settlement.

These are just a few of the reasons it is important applicants stay in touch with FEMA.

Survivors who have registered for assistance should keep their contact information current to ensure timely delivery of important assistance updates.

Keeping one’s contact information current with FEMA will also help connect survivors with FEMA’s home inspectors. Unnecessary delays may occur if an inspector is unable to reach an applicant by phone to schedule an appointment. Insurance May Not Cover Everything So Stay In Touch With Fema

Aurora, Ill. – Illinoisans who were affected by the April 16 to May 5 severe weather and who have not yet registered for federal disaster assistance have only two weeks left to call FEMA’s toll-free registration line at 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 to find out if they are eligible for disaster assistance.

Tuesday, July 9, 2013, is the deadline to register for assistance.

Multilingual phone operators are available. Choose Option 2 for Spanish and Option 3 for other languages.
