New Jersey Disaster Recovery Centers Open in Essex, Hudson, Ocean and Salem Counties

TRENTON, N.J. — Anyone affected by Hurricane Sandy can now visit four newly opened Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) if they have questions about recovery programs. With these four, there are now 25 DRCs are open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until further notice in New Jersey.

Before going to a DRC, it is helpful to register with FEMA. Apply for assistance by registering

online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by web-enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov or by calling

1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Disaster assistance applicants who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY, should call 1-800-462-7585 directly; for those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362.

DRCs allow residents to speak one-on-one to recovery representatives. FEMA program specialists

are available to provide registration and other information, and to answer questions at the centers.

These include mitigation specialists who can provide guidance on cost-effective rebuilding and repair techniques to reduce property damage in future disasters.

It is not necessary to visit a center to receive disaster assistance.

In addition to FEMA program specialists, customer service representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available to answer questions about the SBA low-interest disaster loan program, and to assist with disaster loan applications.

Disaster Legal Help Available for Connecticut

HARTFORD, Conn. – Free assistance with legal issues resulting from Hurricane Sandy is available for Connecticut disaster survivors in the counties designated for FEMA assistance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, through an agreement with the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association and in partnership with the Connecticut Bar Association, provides free legal help for survivors in these counties.

Disaster-related legal questions typically involve such matters as lost wills, landlord-tenant relations, property ownership, home repair contracts, and government benefit programs.

Survivors who qualify for assistance will be matched with Connecticut lawyers who have volunteered to provide free legal help.

Legal help is available to affected residents of Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven, and New London counties and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribal Nation located within New London County. Call the Disaster Legal Services Hotline at: 866-864-4464.

Disaster Recovery Centers Open in Bronx, Kings, Nassau, Queens, Richmond and Suffolk Counties

ALBANY, NY — Eight Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are open to assist homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Specialists from the state of New York, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are on hand to answer questions and provide information on the types of help available to storm survivors.

The Disaster Recovery Centers act as a one-stop shop for eligible survivors to meet with state and federal workers and get help as quickly as possible.

Disaster recovery officials work closely with community leaders to find DRC locations that provide safe and easy access for all survivors.  More centers will open as sites are identified and approved.

Although it can be a convenient way to get one-on-one help, visiting with a recovery specialist is not a requirement for disaster survivors.

Individuals can register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov.  Applicants may also call 1-800-621-3362 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. Preliminary Flood Maps in Tarrant County, TX Ready for Public View

DENTON, Texas –Homeowners, renters and business owners in Tarrant County, Texas, are encouraged to look

over newly released preliminary flood maps in order to determine their flood risks and make informed decisions.

Tarrant County officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are presenting the preliminary

maps to communities and unincorporated areas in order to help leaders and residents identify known flood risks

and use that information to make decisions about buying flood insurance and how the community should move

forward with any development..

“As we work together with our state and local partners to bring this critical information to the county, we ask that

everyone review the maps to understand what flood risks are involved,” said FEMA Region 6 Acting

Administrator Tony Robinson “The role of the community as an active partner in the flood mapping process is

very important.”

To view the new flood maps, please contact your local floodplain administrator (FPA) who may be located at

City Hall or the local courthouse.

owners who do not have flood insurance are encouraged to buy coverage now to get the best possible premiums

before new flood insurance rate maps go into effect. 

The new Santa Fe County flood maps become effective on Tuesday, Dec. 4, giving those who haven’t purchased

flood insurance yet, time to get the best possible premiums to protect their property from potential flooding.

“While many people are required by mortgage and lending companies to have flood insurance, FEMA and the

National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) strongly recommend that everyone have flood insurance,” said Acting

Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson. “The reason is simple: You don’t have to be in a mapped floodplain to

flood.”

Current policy holders and those planning to purchase NFIP protection are strongly encouraged to contact their

insurance agent or company to ensure that they have adequate coverage for building and contents that accounts

for new flood risk data.

Those who purchase flood insurance prior to Dec. 4 may be able to grandfather the current flood zone, saving

money on flood insurance. For more information on estimated rates for flood insurance, whether you are eligible

for grandfathering and the Preferred Risk Policy extension, or to locate an agent in your area, visit

www.floodsmart.gov.

Anyone who hasn’t had a chance to participate in local flood insurance meetings or to review the new flood maps

is encouraged to contact their floodplain administrator who is most likely located at the County or City Offices.

Cleveland and Creek County Residents Receive More Than $11.5 Million in Disaster Assistance

OKLAHOMA CITY – More than $11.5 million in state and federal disaster assistance has been approved for homeowners, renters and businesses impacted by the Aug. 3-14 wildfires in Cleveland and Creek counties according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Eligible residents have received nearly $6 million in Housing Assistance for temporary lodging expenses, home replacement or repairs as well as more than $600,000 in Other Needs Assistance for repair or replacement of personal property, essential vehicles, moving and storage costs, and other miscellaneous disaster related expenses.

Federal disaster assistance programs are available for a limited time following a major disaster declaration. The deadline for all Cleveland and Creek County residents who suffered damages or losses to apply is Nov. 21.

To date, more than 775 individuals and families have registered with FEMA.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved more than $4.9 million in low-interest loans to repair or replace damaged real estate, personal property and business assets not covered by insurance. SBA makes up to $200,000 available to homeowners to repair or replace primary homes; up to $40,000 to homeowners and renters to repair or replace personal property; and, up to $2 million to businesses for physical losses and economic injury.

SBA wants to remind applicants that anyone who registers with FEMA and receives an SBA application needs to submit their completed application by the Nov. 21 deadline. Otherwise, they may miss out on additional federal assistance. Some people mistakenly assume these loans are only for small businesses; or, they choose to ignore them because they do not think they can’t afford or don’t qualify for a disaster loan. 

Residents with access to computers or smartphones may apply for assistance or track their status online at www.disasterassistance.gov, or web-enabled phones at m.fema.gov or the FEMA app. If they do not have a computer, they can call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585. If using 711 Relay or Video Relay Services, the number is the same, 1-800-621-3362. FEMA phone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT seven days a week; multilingual operators are available.

Homeowners, renters and businesses affected by the Aug. 3-14 wildfire, can apply for an SBA disaster loan after registering with FEMA by going online to SBA’s secure site at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela; calling 1-800-659-2955 or TTY 1-800-877-8339. For information on SBA disaster assistance, go to www.sba.gov.
