FRANKFORT, Ky.  – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has amended a recent disaster declaration for severe storms in July in order to make survivors in Leslie County eligible for its Individual Assistance program.

 

Individuals and business owners who sustained losses in Leslie County can apply for assistance by registering online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362. Disaster assistance applicants who are deaf or hard of hearing should call 800-462-7585 (TTY); those who use 711 or Video Relay Service may call 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time seven days a week until further notice.

 

Breathitt, Carter, Fleming, Johnson, Perry, Rowan and Trimble counties were previously designated for Individual Assistance.  

 

Individual Assistance can include money for temporary housing and essential home repairs for primary homes, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

FEMA Region X Regional Administrator Kenneth D. Murphy determined that the fire threatened such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. The fire started on September 13, 2015, and had burned in excess of 2,000 acres of federal, state, and private lands. At the time of the request, the fire was threatening over 125 primary homes in and around the communities of Dallesport and Wishram. Evacuation orders were issued for approximately 300 people. The fire was also threatening public utility transmission and distribution lines along state Route 14, community buildings, irrigation infrastructure, recreational resources at two state parks, and valued environmental resources of the Columbia River.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Washington’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

FMAGs are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; mobilization and demobilization activities; and tools, materials and supplies.

DENTON, Texas – Homeowners, renters and business owners in Willacy County and Cameron County in Texas are encouraged to look over newly-released preliminary flood maps in order to determine their flood risks and make informed decisions.

Local officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are presenting the revised preliminary maps to communities in order to help leaders and residents identify known flood risks in their area. Residents and business owners can use this information to make decisions about buying flood insurance and other building decisions. Community leaders can use this information to identify how the community should move forward with any development.    

“We have worked with our state and local partners to bring this critical information to the county and hope that everyone reviews the maps to understand what flood risks are involved,” said FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson. “It is very important to have the community as an active partner in the flood mapping process.”

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Disaster recovery centers, which are operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will not be open on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

The Johnson County disaster recovery center (120 Tays Branch Road in Paintsville) and the Carter County center (539 Hitchins Ave. in Olive Hill) will close Saturday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. and reopen Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. (EDT).

At the centers, specialists from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration can answer questions and provide information on the types of assistance available to survivors of July’s severe storms and flooding. Specialists can help with registration, check an individual’s case, answer questions about an application or review information needed to process an application.

Murphy approved the state of Idaho’s request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) at 6:00 p.m. PDT on Aug. 29, 2015. Idaho has had four FMAGs approved since July 2015.

The fire started on August 12, 2015 and had burned in excess of 49,000 acres of federal, state, private and tribal land. At the time of the request, the fire perimeter was located 1.5 miles east of Riggins and had moved 11 miles in 12 hours. The fire was threatening 300 homes in and around the community of Riggins, Idaho. Evacuation orders were issued.

The fire also threatened roads, bridges, cell towers, radio towers, power distribution lines, water, sewer and various local businesses in the area. Also at risk are salmon, steelhead and bull trout, and big horn sheep. There were 130 other large fires burning uncontrolled within the state.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state of Idaho’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants provide reimbursement for firefighting and life-saving efforts. They do not provide assistance to individuals, homeowners or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.

FEMA provides federal funds to help fight the Tepee Springs Fire

AUSTIN, Texas – To meet the needs of Texans affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 4 to June 22, a State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Harris County will transition to a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Center on Friday, Aug. 28.

Thursday, Aug. 27, is the final day for survivors to register for FEMA recovery assistance or to apply for a loan from SBA.

The Disaster Recovery Center at Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet St., Houston, TX 77074, will close on Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 28, an SBA center will open at that location at 9 a.m. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until further notice.

Representatives from the SBA will be available at the center to meet individually with residents and business owners to answer their questions, explain SBA’s disaster loan program, help them complete their applications and close their approved disaster loans. 

SBA low-interest disaster assistance loans of up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate.  Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 from SBA to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

Businesses of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

SBA can also lend additional funds to businesses and homeowners to help with the cost of making improvements that protect, prevent or minimize the same type of disaster damage from occurring in the future.

Applying for an SBA low-interest disaster loan is part of federal disaster assistance. Many people who apply to FEMA are automatically referred for a low-interest disaster assistance loan. Survivors should complete SBA loan applications so they can be considered for all available disaster assistance.

SBA is the federal government’s primary source of money to fund long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps businesses of all sizes, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners, and renters fund repairs or rebuilding efforts, and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover uninsured and uncompensated losses and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations.

Survivors with questions regarding their FEMA applications or the appeals process after the DRC transitions to a Disaster Loan Outreach Center have several ways to obtain information:
