BATON ROUGE, La. — The U.S. Small Business Administration is opening a disaster loan outreach center on Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Vermilion Parish to assist Louisiana flood survivors. The center will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, until further notice.

The new disaster loan outreach center will be transitioning from the FEMA disaster recovery center at the same address that will cease operations at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7.

Need for the Abbeville disaster recovery center has diminished as the community continues to repair and rebuild; the facility will now become a disaster loan outreach center to serve individuals with SBA loans.

Survivors can still visit any other disaster recovery center and may locate other centers near them by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362, texting DRC and your zip code to 43362, downloading the FEMA mobile app or going online to fema.gov/drc.

Representatives from the SBA will be available at the disaster loan outreach center to meet with business owners and residents to answer questions, explain SBA’s disaster loan program, help complete loan applications and close their approved disaster loans. Business owners and residents can meet with SBA representatives on the days and times indicated. No appointment is necessary.

Low-interest disaster loans from the SBA are available for businesses of all sizes, most private nonprofit organizations, homeowners and renters.
Applicants for disaster loans may also apply online using the electronic loan application via SBA’s secure website at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

Disaster Recovery Center in Vermilion Parish Will Transition to Disaster Loan Outreach Center to Serve Louisiana Survivors

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Five more home improvement stores— in St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson counties — are teaming up with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide local residents with free information, tips, flyers and brochures to prevent and lessen damage from disasters. 

FEMA mitigation specialists will be available over the next six days to answer questions and offer home improvement tips on making homes stronger and safer against disasters. Most of the information is geared toward do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Advisers will be available February 18-23 at the following locations . . .

  • Home Depot at 3891 Mexico Rd, St. Charles, MO 63303 (St. Charles County)

  • Home Depot at 11215 St. Charles Rock Road, Bridgeton, MO 63044 (St. Louis County)
  • Lowe’s at 920 Arnold Commons Drive, Arnold, MO 63010 (Jefferson County)

Public Open Houses Set for March 25-27 in St. Charles, St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes

DENTON, Texas –Homeowners, renters and business owners in the Greater New Orleans area who did not get a chance to visit flood map open houses March 18-20 now have a virtual option to get information about preliminary flood maps.

A ‘virtual’ open house is available online at www.floodrisk-la.org and features information on the proposed flood maps for Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, and St. Charles parishes.

The website contains links to the online flood maps, and includes details on how to view your flood risk, what it means if your flood risk changes, what you can do to help reduce that flood risk, how to insure your risk, what actions are being taken to address a community’s risk and details about the mapping process.

Meanwhile, there are three flood map open houses scheduled for March 25-27 where residents can meet one on one with state, local and Federal Emergency Management Agency flood mapping partners and view the preliminary maps. Visitors can drop by anytime between 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. on the days below:

Virtual Flood Map Open House Available for Greater New Orleans Residents

Acting Health Commissioner Darice Plaskett announced that the Department of Health’s Functional and Access Needs Shelter is opened and accepting residents at the Charles Harwood Medical Complex for persons needing medical assistance during emergency evacuation situations. 

Plaskett said that the intent is to provide, to the extent possible under emergency conditions, an environment in which the current level of health of persons with functional and access needs is sustained within the capability of available resources. The shelter will be opened at 7 p.m. on St. Croix.

Functional and access needs are independent individuals with special medical support equipment needs or receive care in the home from a family member, she said.

“Those eligible for the [shelter] have physical or mental condition that require medical/nursing oversight that cannot be accommodated or provided for in a general population shelter,” Plaskett said.

Functional and Access Needs persons should bring medical equipment, such as oxygen tanks, if necessary and all medication and dietary supplies. 

Further, when a person requiring functional and access needs care is ordered to evacuate, he or she should bring a caregiver with them to the shelter who will be expected to remain with the Functional and Access Needs person. 

Plaskett said that Department of Health nurses are assigned to staff the shelter to assist individuals and their caregivers as needed for basic support services. The nursing staff will provide support within their scope of practice based on their training and qualifications and are not expected to provide total care beyond their professional level of expertise. A DOH physician will supervise the nurses.

The following are some of the criteria for Functional and Access Needs.

People with minor health/medical conditions that require professional observation, assessment and maintenance

People with contagious health conditions that require precautions or isolation which cannot be handled in a general population shelter

People with chronic conditions that require assistance with activities of daily living but do not require hospitalization

People with regular need for medications and/or regular vital sign readings and who are unable to do so without professional assistance
